Chúa Giêsu là Đấng mặc khải mà ông Nicôđêmô (và qua ông, dân Do
thái) đã không nhận biết (x. 1,18; 6,46; 14,7-9). Từ yêu sách này,
Chúa Giêsu và qua Người, các Kitô hữu, không những chống lại những
người Do thái đương thời, cả đến những người thân cận như ông

Để tạo uy tín cho lời nói của mình, trước hết Chúa Giêsu đặt nó vào
trong lịch sử Israel. Sự mới mẻ mà Người mang đến, cần phải là sự
hoàn tất mọi điều Kinh Thánh. Con rắn được giương cao trong sa mạc,
theo sách Dân Số 21,4-9, đã giải thoát các người Do thái bất trung
khỏi phải chết. Từ giai thoại bí nhiệm này, chúng ta nên lưu ý những

Câu này tóm gọn mặc khải; ở đây chúng ta đang đứng trước những
“chuyện trên trời” được nói đến ở câu 12. Nên lưu ý đến kết cấu Do
thái song song: cách phân chia câu cú có thể giúp nhận ra những
thành phần của câu tương ứng với nhau: “Con Người cũng sẽ phải được
giương cao như vậy”; hoàn cảnh và các tác nhân cụ thể gây nên cái
chết của Chúa Giêsu không được phơi bày ở đây. Thánh sử chỉ giữ lại
sự “nhất thiết” (phải) ăn rễ sâu trong ý định của Thiên Chúa. Việc
dùng thì thụ động tiếp sau đó có thể là một cách hành văn để tránh
phải dùng đến từ “Thiên Chúa”. Kết cấu bản văn chứng tỏ sự song song
giữa Thiên Chúa yêu thương và Người được giương cao. Từ câu này
chúng ta nhận ra bản tóm lược sự mặc khải, chúng ta thử dẫn ra những
điểm sau đây:</span></p>

Chúa. Từ này xuất hiện ở đây lần đầu tiên trong Tin Mừng Gioan. Đặc
biệt nó sẽ được lặp lại trong phần thứ hai của Tin Mừng. “Thiên Chúa
đã yêu đến nỗi đã ban Con mình”: cả hai động từ đều được dùng ở thì
quá khứ vô định, một sắc thái của thì động từ không dùng trong tiếng
Pháp, chỉ định một thời điểm rõ ràng và chính xác (hội nhập vào bước
đường lịch sử của Chúa Giêsu và kết thúc trên thập giá). Chính nhờ
ân huệ này của Thiên Chúa mà Gioan có thể nói đến tình yêu. Đó là
tình yêu hiển thị (1Ga 4,10). Việc nhập thể chính là sự biểu lộ tình
yêu mà đỉnh cao là thập giá.</span></span></p>

line-height:107%"> Thập giá không phải là nguồn ơn cứu độ ở khía cạnh một của lễ
đền tội đẫm máu. Chính bởi vì nó là cách diễn tả cao cả nhất của
tình yêu Thiên Chúa, cho nên nó là nguồn sự sống cho các tín hữu.
Chúng ta không nên nhìn thập giá như nơi Thiên Chúa trút cơn thịnh
nộ, nơi Chúa Con bị Chúa Cha từ bỏ để cứu độ chuộc tội lỗi loài
người. Nơi đây Chúa Con và Chúa Cha thông hiệp cùng một tình yêu
dành cho nhân loại. Prométhée chịu hình phạt của chúa tể trên chính
tảng đá mà chúa tể đã xử phạt mình vì đã mang lửa cho loài người. Và
ca đoàn lý giải các nguyên do hình phạt bằng những lời lẽ này: “Đó
là kẻ thù của Zeus, kẻ đã chấp nhận sự căm hờn của mọi thần linh vì
đã quá yêu loài người”. Trong Tin Mừng của Gioan, tình yêu loài
người được Thiên Chúa Cha và Con cùng chia sẻ.</span></span></p>

Chữ “trời” xuất hiện rất nhiều lần trong tất cả các sách Kinh Thánh.
Nó chỉ một thực tại căn bản của tôn giáo, của đời sống tâm linh.
Nhưng “trời” là gì? - Bình thường, người ta hay nghĩ trời là không
gian bao la vô tận, trong đó chứa hàng tỷ tỷ tinh tú hay thiên thể
như mặt trời, trái đất, trăng sao. Nghĩ như vậy thì hoàn toàn không
sai, vì đó là nghĩa chính, nghĩa đen, nghĩa vật chất của chữ “trời”.
Nhưng “trời” thường được nói đến trong Kinh Thánh không có ý nghĩa
vật chất như vậy. Chữ “trời” với ý nghĩa vật chất chỉ là dấu chỉ, là
hình ảnh tượng trưng cho một cảnh giới tâm linh tuy vô hình đối với
con mắt vật chất của con người, nhưng lại có thật, thậm chí còn thật
hơn cả thế giới vật chất này nữa. Thế giới vật chất này tuy kéo dài
hàng tỉ năm, nhưng vẫn là một cái gì hữu hạn cả về không gian lẫn
thời gian: trải rộng trong một khoảng không gian nào đó nhất định,
có thời điểm sinh ra và có thời điểm bị tiêu diệt. Khi đã bị tiêu
diệt, thì sự hiện hữu của nó chỉ tương tự như một hình bóng, một
giấc mơ thoảng qua, tương tự như hiện nay ta nghĩ về sự hiện hữu của
những ngôi sao đã tắt, hay những nền văn minh cổ đại mà người ta
khám phá được những di tích của chúng dưới lòng đất. Chúng hiện hữu
mà có vẻ như không hiện hữu, chẳng khác bao nhiêu so với những giấc
mơ trong đêm!</span></p>

Cảnh giới tâm linh là cảnh giới của Thiên Chúa, của các thiên thần,
mà những người có đời sống tâm linh phát triển có thể cảm nghiệm
được phần nào, chẳng hạn các nhà thần bí như Phaolô (x. 2Cr 12,2),
Gioan Thánh Giá, Têrêxa Avila, Meister Eckhart, hay các Kitô hữu
thánh thiện khác. Đó là cảnh giới của sự sống vĩnh cửu mà thánh
Phaolô mô tả: “Điều mắt chẳng hề thấy, tai chẳng hề nghe, lòng người
không hề nghĩ tới, đó lại là điều Thiên Chúa đã dọn sẵn cho những ai
mến yêu Người” (1Cr 2,9). Người bình thường không hề có một kinh
nghiệm nào về cảnh giới này, cũng chẳng có thể tưởng tượng ra được,
vì nó vượt ra khỏi tất cả mọi khả năng tưởng tượng của con người,
tương tự như một người mù bẩm sinh không thể có một quan niệm hay
tưởng tượng nào đúng đắn về màu sắc và ánh sáng. Cảnh giới này tồn
tại muôn đời, nó hoàn toàn không liên quan gì với không gian hay
thời gian mà chúng ta thường quan niệm. Nói theo triết lý Ấn Độ, nó
nhỏ đến nỗi một hạt bụi cũng đủ chứa nó trọn vẹn, nhưng nó cũng lớn
đến nỗi cả vũ trụ bao la này cũng không chứa nổi nó. Đức Giêsu “về
trời” hay “thăng thiên” là trở về với cảnh giới tâm linh này, nơi
Ngài đã từ đó mà đến.</span></p>

Cảnh giới tâm linh sâu thẳm và vô tận này không ở đâu xa, nó hiện
diện ngay trong tâm hồn chúng ta, nhưng nếu không có đời sống tâm
linh sâu xa, chúng ta chẳng hề cảm nghiệm được. Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa,
Đức Giêsu hiện diện thật sự trong cảnh giới này. Theo lời Đức Giêsu
trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, thì Ngài là người duy nhất đã từ cảnh
giới tâm linh này đến với con người. Và Ngài đến trần gian này là để
giúp chúng ta khám phá, thưởng nếm và dẫn chúng ta vào sống trong
cảnh giới tâm linh bất diệt này. Chỉ khi nào khám phá và thưởng nếm
cảnh giới tâm linh này, con người mới giải thoát được mọi đau khổ,
mới cảm nghiệm được thế nào là hạnh phúc chân thật, thứ hạnh phúc
không ai có thể lấy mất được.</span></p>

Để giúp con người đi vào đời sống tâm linh, là đời sống của Thiên
Chúa, hay sự sống đời đời, thì Đức Giêsu phải “được giương cao”,
tương tự như con rắn đồng ở trong sa mạc thời Môsê, khi được giương
cao lên, ai bị rắn cắn mà nhìn lên đó thì được chữa lành. Hình ảnh
con rắn đồng được giương cao quả là đầy ý nghĩa. Tình trạng bị rắn
cắn đau đớn và có thể chết người tượng trưng cho sự đau khổ tột cùng
của con người. Thiên Chúa đã lấy ngay hình con rắn để trị bệnh rắn
cắn, nghĩa là lấy chính đau khổ để diệt đau khổ: đó là một hình thức
“dĩ độc trị độc”. Khi con rắn “được giương cao” thì nó trị được sự
đau đớn do rắn cắn, điều đó có nghĩa là khi người ta hiểu được giá
trị của đau khổ, khiến họ tự nguyện chấp nhận đau khổ, thì sự chấp
nhận đó có thể tiêu diệt được đau khổ, chẳng những cho mình, mà cho
cả người khác. Việc con rắn “được giương cao”, theo cách hiểu truyền
thống, là hình ảnh Đức Giêsu bị treo lên cao khỏi mặt đất, hay bị
treo trên thập giá, nghĩa là Ngài đã tự nguyện chấp nhận sự đau khổ
cùng tột của con người. Nhờ đó, Ngài đem lại ơn cứu độ hay sự giải
thoát khỏi đau khổ cho tất cả những ai tin vào Ngài.</span></p>

Đây là một bài học về một định luật trong cuộc sống: Đau khổ của con
người có thể được hóa giải bằng chính việc vui lòng hay tự nguyện
chấp nhận tất cả những đau khổ xảy đến với mình. Thật vậy, khi ta
không còn sợ hãi đau khổ, mà sẵn sàng vui vẻ đón nhận khi nó đến với
mình, thì nó bỗng mất đi hoặc bớt đi khả năng gây đau khổ. Trái lại,
càng sợ đau khổ, càng muốn tránh né nó, thì nó lại càng tăng khả
năng gây khổ hơn. Chính vì thế, kinh nghiệm dân gian về định luật
này được tóm lại trong câu: “Ghét của nào, Trời trao của nấy”: càng
ghét đau khổ, thì càng hấp dẫn đau khổ đến với mình. Về hạnh phúc
cũng có phần tương tự như vậy. Càng quan tâm tới hạnh phúc của mình,
càng khao khát tìm hạnh phúc, thì hạnh phúc dường như càng xa khỏi
tầm tay của mình. Càng không nghĩ tới nó, không quan tâm tới nó, thì
dường như nó càng dễ đến gần mình hơn, và vào trong tầm tay của
mình.</span></p>

Đau khổ và hạnh phúc là cái gì liên quan rất mật thiết với “cái tôi”
của ta. Càng coi “cái tôi” của mình là quan trọng, càng quan tâm hay
chú ý tới nó, thì càng nhạy cảm với đau khổ, càng dễ đau khổ, càng
thấy bị “mất mình”, “vong thân”. Trái lại, càng coi “cái tôi” của
mình không là gì cả, càng ít quan tâm tới nó, thì càng dễ cảm nhận
được hạnh phúc. Đây quả là một nghịch lý của sự sống. Càng sống ích
kỷ, càng chỉ nghĩ đến mình, ta càng đánh mất mình, càng thấy cuộc
đời là vô nghĩa, và càng đau khổ. Trái lại, càng quên mình, nhất là
càng sống vị tha, ta càng thấy cuộc sống có ý nghĩa và hạnh phúc.
Đức Giêsu có nói về nghịch lý này: “Ai yêu quý mạng sống mình, thì
sẽ mất; còn ai coi thường mạng sống mình ở đời này, thì sẽ giữ lại
được cho sự sống đời đời” (Ga 12,25). Còn thánh Phanxicô Khó Khăn
thì nói: “Chính khi hiến thân là khi được nhận lãnh, chính lúc quên
mình là lúc gặp lại bản thân” (Kinh Hòa Bình).</span></p>

Vui lòng hay tự nguyện chấp nhận đau khổ, mất mát, thiệt thòi, nhục
nhã là một hình thức xả kỷ, quên mình, “tự hủy”, đó là một hình thức
“được giương cao”, “được treo lên”. Đây chính là con đường dẫn đến
giải thoát mà Đức Giêsu đã chỉ cho chúng ta, và Ngài đã làm gương
cho chúng ta: “Đức Giêsu Kitô vốn dĩ là Thiên Chúa mà không nghĩ
phải nhất quyết duy trì địa vị ngang hàng với Thiên Chúa, nhưng đã
hoàn toàn trút bỏ vinh quang mặc lấy thân nô lệ, trở nên giống phàm
nhân sống như người trần thế. Người lại còn hạ mình, vâng lời cho
đến nỗi bằng lòng chịu chết, chết trên cây thập tự” (Pl 2,6-8). Như
vậy, Ngài đã lấy chính đau khổ của mình để diệt đau khổ cho nhân
loại, lấy sự tự hạ mình để nâng con người lên, lấy cái chết của mình
để đem lại sự sống cho con người. Thánh Phêrô viết: “Vì Người mang
vào mình những vết thương mà anh em được chữa lành” (1Pr 2,24). Đó
là cách Ngài diệt đau khổ và đem lại hạnh phúc cho chúng ta.</span></p>

Bài Tin Mừng viết: “Con Người phải được giương cao, để ai tin vào
Người thì được sống muôn đời”. “Được giương cao” ở đây có nghĩa là
“được treo lên”, là tự nguyện chịu đau khổ và chết. Ngài đau khổ để
con người hạnh phúc. Ngài chết để con người được sống. Nhưng thực
ra, con người vẫn đang đau khổ và vẫn chết về mặt tâm linh. Con
người chỉ hưởng được ích lợi của sự đau khổ và sự chết của Ngài khi
họ tin vào Ngài. Tin vào Ngài nghĩa là gì? Chắc chắn không phải chỉ
là sự tuyên bố chấp nhận Ngài là Con Thiên Chúa hay là Đấng Cứu Độ,
mà là một thái độ sống chứng tỏ mình chấp nhận điều ấy. Tin rằng
Ngài đã đau khổ và đã chết để đem lại ơn cứu độ hay hạnh phúc và sự
sống cho nhân loại, nghĩa là tin rằng cách Ngài làm là cách tốt nhất
để đem lại hạnh phúc và sự sống cho mình và mọi người. Nếu thật sự
tin như thế, ta sẽ áp dụng cách đó vào trong đời sống của mình,
nghĩa là sẵn sàng chấp nhận mọi đau khổ xảy đến, sống xả kỷ, quên
mình, để nhờ đó chẳng những chính ta được hạnh phúc và còn đem lại
hạnh phúc cho người khác nữa. Đó cũng chính là cách để đi vào cảnh
giới tâm linh vĩnh cửu, vào sự sống đời đời mà Thiên Chúa đã hứa cho
những ai yêu mến Ngài.</span></p>

gian tham, trộm cắp, giết người, hiềm thù, chia rẽ, ghét ghen, trai
gái, thuốc xái... gây nên hỗn loạn trong xã hội. Nói tóm lại Thánh
Giá luôn gắn liền với cuộc sống con người.</span></p>

Hôm nay là ngày lễ suy tôn Thánh Giá, chúng ta hãy ngắm nhìn lên
gương Chúa Giêsu. Ngài không trốn tránh Thập Giá. Ngài xuống trần
gian không phải để lên án thế gian, bắt thế gian vác Thập Tự Giá
đúng như việc đền tội mà thế gian phải chịu do án phạt của tội
nguyên tổ. Ngài xuống trần gian để cứu độ con người, hình ảnh Thập
Giá giải thoát con người khỏi tội lỗi đã được loan báo trước từ thời
cựu ước khi ông Moisen làm một con rắn bằng đồng và treo lên cây
cột, hễ ai bị rắn cắn mà nhìn lên con rắn đồng đó thì được cứu sống.
Còn chính Ngài sẽ bị tan nát như sách tiên tri Isaia đoạn 53 mô tả
về Ngài để gánh lấy tội trần gian. “Qủa vậy Thiên Chúa sai con của
Người đến thế gian để thế gian nhờ con của Người mà được cứu độ”
(cf. Jn.3,17). Do đó tất cả những sướng vui ở đời này Ngài đã không
hưởng dụng, ngược lại Ngài chuốc lấy đau khổ trong cuộc sống: Sinh
ra trong mùa giá rét, vác Thánh Giá trong mùa nóng bức. Ngài biến
đổi Thánh Giá ở đời này thành của lễ đền tội và ơn tha thứ. Đây là
chiến thắng của tình yêu thương thế gian, một tình yêu vượt trên mọi
tình yêu, Ngài đã yêu thương đến cùng, Ngài yêu thương tha thiết
nhất lúc chịu đóng đinh và trút hơi thở cuối cùng trên Thánh Giá.</span></p>

Là môn đệ Chúa Giêsu, chúng ta cũng phải luôn bước theo chân Ngài
lên đỉnh đồi Canvê, trên đồi cao đó có Đức Mẹ là người đã thông phần
đau khổ cách da diết nhất, vì chính Mẹ đã sinh ra người con vác Thập
Tự đẫm máu. Mẹ đã được gọi vào nhiệm cuộc thông phần khổ nạn của
Chúa Giêsu như lời ông Simeon đã nói về Mẹ: “Một lưỡi gươm sẽ đâm
thấu tâm hồn Bà” (Luc. 2,35). Theo gương Mẹ Đồng Công Cứu Chuộc,
chúng ta cũng phải biến đổi Thánh Giá ở đời này thành những hiệu quả
của ơn cứu chuộc mà Chúa Giêsu đã lập. Như giọt nước biến tan trong
rượu nho, chúng ta cũng hợp những hy sinh của ta với đau khổ của
Chúa Giêsu, làm thành của lễ dâng lên Thiên Chúa Cha, để sinh ích
cho linh hồn mình và cho muôn ngàn vạn triệu các linh hồn khác trên
thế giới.</span></p>
