Lúc tôi bị biệt giam, trước tiên người ta trao cho năm người gác tôi:
đêm ngày có hai anh trực. Cứ hai tuần đổi một tổ mới, để khỏi bị tôi làm
nhiễm độc. Một thời gian sau không thay nữa, vì “cấp trên” nói: “Nếu cứ
thay riết thì sở công an bị nhiễm độc hết!”</span></p>

Thực thế, để tránh nhiễm độc, mấy anh không nói với tôi, họ chỉ trả lời
“có” hoặc “không”. Họ tránh nói chuyện với tôi. Buồn quá! Tôi muốn lịch
sự vui vẻ với họ, họ vẫn lạnh lùng. Phải chăng họ ghét “cái mác phản
động” nơi tôi: Tất cả áo quần đều đóng dấu hai chữ lớn “cải tạo”, kể từ
ngày bước chân vào trại Vĩnh Quang ở Bắc Việt.</span></p>

Một đêm đông lạnh quá, không ngủ được, tôi nghe một tiếng nhắc nhủ tôi:
“Tại sao con dại thế? Con còn giàu lắm: Con mang tình thương Chúa Giêsu
trong tim con. Hãy yêu thương họ như Chúa Giêsu đã yêu con”. Sáng hôm
sau, tôi bắt đầu mến họ, yêu mến Chúa Giêsu trong họ, tươi cười với họ,
trao đổi đôi ba câu nói... Tôi thuật lại những chuyến đi ra nước ngoài,
cuộc sống, văn hóa, kinh tế, khoa học kỹ thuật, tự do dân chủ ở Canada,
Nhật Bản, Philippines, Singapore, Pháp, Đức, Uc, Ao, v.v... Những câu
chuyện đó kích thích tính tò mò của họ, giục họ đặt nhiều câu hỏi. Tôi
luôn luôn trả lời... Dần dần chúng tôi trở thành bạn. Họ muốn học sinh
ngữ Anh, Pháp... tôi giúp họ. Từ từ mấy chiến sĩ gác tôi trở thành học
trò của tôi! Bầu khí nhà giam đổi nhiều, quan hệ giữa họ với tôi tốt đẹp
hơn. Thậm chí cả những ông xếp công an, thấy tôi đối xử chân thành,
không những họ xin tôi giúp các chiến sĩ học hành ngoại ngữ, nhưng họ
còn gửi anh khác đến học.</span></p>

Những cán bộ phụ trách về tôn giáo phải hiểu đúng mỗi tôn giáo thì việc
đối thoại, tiếp xúc các chức sắc mỗi tôn giáo cũng như các tín hữu mới
có tính cách xây dựng, tích cực và tạo nên thông cảm giữa đôi bên.</span></p>

những danh từ thông dụng nhất trong tôn giáo, từ A đến Z, chừng nào các
vị có giờ rảnh, tôi sẽ giải thích rõ ràng, khách quan. Hy vọng các vị có
thể hiểu lịch sử, cơ cấu, sự phát triển và hoạt động của Giáo hội...</span></p>

đã trao giấy mực cho tôi, tôi đã viết cuốn “lexicon” đó, bằng tiếng
Pháp, Anh, Ý, Latinh, Tây Ban Nha, và Trung Quốc với phần giải thích
bằng Việt ngữ. Dần dà tôi có cơ hội giải thích hoặc giải đáp thắc mắc,
tôi chấp nhận làm sáng tỏ những chỉ trích về Giáo hội. “Lexicon” ấy trở
thành một cuốn giáo lý thực hành. Ai cũng muốn biết viện phụ là gì,
thượng phụ là gì, Công giáo khác Anh giáo, Tin Lành, Chính Thống giáo
chỗ nào? Tài chánh của Tòa thánh từ đâu mà có? Có bao nhiêu tu sĩ, giáo
dân làm việc trong giáo triều, huấn luyện tu sĩ, giáo sĩ thế nào? Giáo
hội phục vụ nhân loại thế nào? Tại sao Giáo hội gồm có nhiều dân tộc,
sống qua nhiều thời đại cũng bị bắt bớ, tiêu diệt, cũng mang nhiều
khuyết điểm mà vẫn tồn tại? Ngang đây là đến biên giới của siêu nhiên,
của sự quan phòng của Thiên Chúa... Cuộc đối thoại từ A đến Z giúp xóa
tan một số hiểu lầm, một số thành kiến, có những lúc trở nên thú vị và
hấp dẫn. Tôi tin tưởng có nhiều người cởi mở, muốn tìm hiểu và với những
biến chuyển trong thời đại ta, đã có những tầm nhìn mới mẻ và xây dựng.</span></p>

Thời kỳ biệt giam ở Hà Nội, tôi được biết có 20 chiến sĩ nam nữ trẻ học
tiếng Latinh với một cựu tu sĩ, để có thể đọc các tài liệu của Giáo hội.
Trong số mấy anh gác tôi có hai anh trong nhóm học Latinh. Trông thấy
bài vở, tôi nhận thấy họ học tốt. Một hôm, một trong hai anh ấy hỏi tôi:</span></p>

rồi múc nước vừa tắm vừa hát: Veni Creator Spiritus... Tôi rất cảm động,
làm sao mỗi sáng trong nhà tù cộng sản lại có một cán bộ hát kinh “Veni
Creator” cho mình nghe!</span></p>

Trong Phúc âm, nhìn đoàn lũ theo Ngài đã ba ngày, Chúa Giêsu nói: “Tôi
thương xót dân này” (Mt 15, 32); “Họ khác nào đoàn chiên không mục tử”
(Mc 6, 34)... Trong những lúc bi đát nhất ở trong tù, tôi kiệt lực không
còn sức mà đọc kinh, nguyện ngắm, tôi tìm một cách để tóm tắt cốt tủy
của lời cầu nguyện, của sứ điệp Chúa Giêsu như thế này “Tôi sống chúc
thư Chúa Giêsu”. Nghĩa là yêu mến mọi người như Chúa Giêsu đã yêu thương
tôi, trong tha thứ, trong nhân từ, trong hiệp nhất, như Ngài đã cầu
nguyện “Xin Cha cho họ nên một, như Cha ở trong Con và Con ở trong Cha”
(Ga 17, 21). Tôi năng cầu nguyện: “Tôi sống chúc thư Chúa Giêsu”. Tôi
muốn làm như cậu bé đã dâng tất cả những gì mình có. Năm chiếc bánh và
hai con cá không đáng gì cả, nhưng là “tất cả” của nó, để trở thành “khí
cụ tình thương của Chúa Giêsu”.</span></p>
