Thật đúng vậy, Chúa Giêsu là một người bạn hay đòi hỏi, hay chỉ cho ta
nhắm những mục đích cao cả, ... Hãy đạp đổ những rào cản của nông nỗi và
sợ hãi bao vây các bạn! Hãy nhận ra mình là những “con người mới”.</span></p>

tôi còn là một linh mục sinh viên ở Roma, có một người đã bảo tôi: “Đức
tính lớn nhất của bạn là ‘hăng say nhiệt tình’, còn tính xấu tệ nhất là
‘hay tấn công’”. Dù thế nào đi nữa, tôi là một người ham hoạt động:
hướng đạo sinh, tuyên úy tráng đoàn Lavang, cắm trại trên núi Bạch mã...
Một tư tưởng thúc bách tôi mỗi ngày: phải chạy đua với đồng hồ! Làm tất
cả những gì có thể được để củng cố và phát triển Giáo hội trong Giáo
phận Nha Trang, trước khi thời gian khốn khó xảy đến, khi phải sống dưới
chế độ cộng sản!</span></p>

Trọng tâm hoạt động của tôi là huấn luyện nhân sự: gia tăng đại chủng
sinh từ 42 đến 147 trong tám năm; gia tăng số tiểu chủng sinh từ 200 đến
500 trong bốn chủng viện; tu nghiệp các linh mục trong sáu giáo phận của
Giáo tỉnh miền Trung; phát triển và huấn luyện các phong trào thanh
niên, giáo dân, các hội đồng giáo xứ, mục vụ... Tôi rất quí mến giáo
phận đầu tiên của tôi là Nha Trang.</span></p>

Giờ đây, tôi phải đi vào Sàigòn lập tức, theo lệnh Đức Phaolô VI bổ
nhiệm. Không kịp từ biệt những ai đã từng hiệp nhất với tôi trong cùng
một lý tưởng, cùng một quyết tâm, cùng chia sẻ hân hoan và thử thách.</span></p>

Đêm ấy 7-5-1975, khi tôi ghi âm những lời tạm biệt Giáo phận Nha Trang,
tôi đã khóc nhiều, đó là một lần độc nhất tôi đã khóc nhiều, đó là một
lần độc nhất tôi đã khóc thổn thức trong tám năm ở Nha Trang - vì thương
nhớ. Nhưng tâm hồn tôi rất bình an, vì tôi vâng lời Đức Thánh Cha.</span></p>

Tiếp đến là gian khổ thử thách tại Sàigòn, là bị bắt đưa trở lại Nha
Trang, nơi mà tôi đã bị biệt giam khắc nghiệt nhất, không xa Tòa Giám
mục của tôi. Sáng tối tôi nghe tiếng chuông nhà thờ chánh tòa như xé nát
tim tôi. Đêm đến tôi nghe tiếng sóng biển vỗ cạnh buồng biệt giam.</span></p>

Nha Trang tôi bị đưa trở lại Sàigòn, ở trại Thủ Đức, vùng Tam Hà, ngày
đêm nghe không biết bao nhiêu tiếng chuông nhà thờ. Đêm 1-12-1975, cùng
với 1500 bạn tù đói, mệt, chán nản, còng tay hai người chung một khóa số
8, bước xuống gầm tàu “Hải Phòng” đậu tại bến Tân cảng gần cầu Xa lộ, để
chở ra trại cải tạo Vĩnh Quang, tỉnh Vĩnh Phú, trong thung lũng núi Tam
Đảo, mùa đông 1976-77 rét 2?C.</span></p>

Đặc biệt nhất là nỗi gian khổ của 9 năm biệt giam một mình với hai người
gác, không bạn bè, không có việc làm, tôi ở trong một sự trống rỗng
tuyệt đối, đến mức có thể điên đi được. Tôi đi lại suốt ngày trong buồng
giam, để vận động cơ thể kẻo nằm luôn thì tôi sẽ chết vì thấp khớp, viêm
phổi.</span></p>

Nhiều lúc một mình, tôi bị đau khổ giày vò, tại sao đang lúc mình 48
tuổi, trưởng thành và khỏe mạnh, sau tám năm Giám mục tôi đã có nhiều
kinh nghiệm mục vụ, lại phải vào phòng biệt giam, xa giáo phận những
1700 km?</span></p>

Một đêm thanh vắng, một tiếng từ đáy lòng nhắc nhở tôi: “Tại sao con
quẫn trí, hoang mang như thế làm gì? Con phải biết phân biệt giữa Chúa
và công việc của Chúa. Những gì con đã làm và tiếp tục làm như kinh lý
giáo phận, huấn luyện nam nữ tu sĩ, giáo dân, thanh niên, kiến thiết
thánh đường, cư xá sinh viên, mở mang các thí điểm truyền giáo... tất cả
những công tác ấy đều là những việc tốt lành, là việc của Chúa, nhưng
không phải là Chúa! Nếu Chúa muốn con trao tất cả các việc ấy trong tay
Ngài, con hãy làm ngay, và hãy tin tưởng vào Ngài. Chúa có thể làm tốt
hơn con muôn nghìn lần; Ngài có thể trao việc của Ngài cho những người
tài đức hơn con. Hãy chọn một mình Chúa thôi, chọn thánh ý Ngài, chứ
đừng chọn việc của Chúa!”</span></p>

Tôi luôn luôn học tập làm theo ý Chúa. Nhưng ánh sáng này mang lại cho
tôi một sinh lực mới, thay đổi tận gốc lối suy nghĩ của tôi, giúp tôi
vượt qua những bước gian truân mà hầu như cơ thể không chịu đựng nổi. Từ
đây tôi cảm thấy trong lòng tôi “một sự bình an mà thế gian không cho
được”.</span></p>

Theo tính tự nhiên, những lúc chương trình đang thực hiện tốt đẹp phải
bỏ dở, hoạt động đang hăng say phải bó tay, nhiệm vụ đang quan trọng
phải hạ tầng công tác! Uất ức và chán nản! Tôi tự hỏi: Chúa gọi con “Hãy
theo Thầy” hay “Hãy theo việc nọ, người kia?” Để đó, Chúa sẽ liệu, Ngài
sẽ giải quyết tốt hơn con là cái chắc.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 150%; margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">

trại Phú Khánh, tôi bị giam trong một phòng không có cửa sổ, phải đi qua
3 lớp cửa trong một hành lang mới đến khí trời. Vào đó nóng cực kỳ, tôi
ngột ngạt và cảm thấy trí óc mất sáng suốt dần dần, cuối cùng là mê man.
Có lúc người ta để đèn sáng như ban ngày, lúc khác lại nằm trong bóng
tối. Buồng vừa nóng vừa ẩm, đến nỗi tôi xuống nằm dưới nền, còn nấm thì
mọc lên trắng cả chiếc chiếu của tôi. Lúc nằm trong tối tăm, tôi thấy có
một lỗ dưới vách, ánh sáng lọt vào, tôi lết đến, kê mũi vào đó để thở.
Lúc nào trời mưa, nước ở ngoài ngập, những con trùng ở ngoài bò vào, có
cả giun và có lần có cả con rết dài; dù thấy vậy, nhưng tôi yếu mệt quá
không làm gì được, tôi cứ để cho chúng bò quanh, ngày nào nước xuống,
thì chúng lại bò ra. Sau này hai linh mục bị giam cách tôi 2 lớp cửa, đã
thuật lại cho tôi biết: “Một hôm cô Thanh, cấp dưỡng, đã mỡ cửa cho
chúng con ra đứng nhìn Đức Cha nằm dưới đất và bảo: cho hai anh nhìn
thấy ông Thuận, ông sắp chết!” Nhưng trong cơn cơ cực này, Chúa đã cứu
tôi!</span></p>

Tôi phải chọn Chúa chứ không phải việc của Chúa: Chính Chúa muốn cho tôi
ở đây, chứ không phải nơi khác.</span></p>

Lúc tôi bị nhốt dưới khoang tàu Hải Phòng cùng với 1500 anh em tù nhân
bị đưa ra Bắc, tôi đã thấy trên nét mặt của họ nỗi thất vọng, lòng căm
thù. Tôi chia sẻ đau khổ của họ. Nhưng tôi lại nghe tiếng: “Hãy chọn
Chúa chứ không phải việc của Chúa!” Tôi đã thưa: “Lạy Chúa, chính đây là
nhà thờ chánh tòa của con. Đây là dân Chúa trao cho con phục vụ, con
phải làm cho Chúa hiện diện giữa những người anh em chán nản, cùng khổ
này. Đây là ý Chúa, nên con phải chọn”.</span></p>

Khi tôi lên trại cải tạo, giữa thung lũng núi Tam Đảo, tỉnh Vĩnh Phú,
tôi gặp 250 anh em cùng một chuyến đi, đa số không Công giáo, tôi vẫn
nghe tiếng ấy thúc bách: “Hãy chọn Chúa chứ không phải việc của Chúa. -
Lạy Chúa, Chúa sai con đến đây để làm cho tình thương của Chúa hiện diện
giữa các anh em con, giữa đói khát và giá lạnh, giữa lao động cải tạo
nhọc nhằn và tủi nhục bất công. Con xin chọn Chúa, không phải chọn công
việc của Chúa. Con chọn thánh ý Chúa, giờ đây con là tông đồ truyền giáo
của Chúa”.</span></p>

giây phút ấy, một sự bình an mới tràn ngập tâm hồn tôi, ở với tôi suốt
13 năm tù đày. Tôi cảm thấy thấm thía sự yếu hèn của tôi; tôi lặp lại sự
chọn lựa của tôi, lúc ấy không bao giờ Chúa để lòng tôi thiếu an bình.
Tất cả là hồng ân của Chúa. Mỗi khi tôi tuyên bố: “Vì Chúa, vì Hội
thánh”, tôi phải thinh lặng trước mặt Chúa, và thành thật hỏi Chúa:
“Chúa thấy con hành động hoàn toàn vì ai? Con đã chọn vinh danh Chúa,
sống và hành động tuyệt đối vì Chúa? hay Chúa là lý do thứ yếu, còn lý
do khác mạnh hơn, con không tiện nói?”</span></p>

Đây là một sự chọn lựa tuyệt vời, nhưng không phải dễ dàng. Đức Gioan
Phaolô II kêu gọi các bạn:</span></p>

Các bạn trẻ thân mến, như các môn đệ thuở ban đầu, hãy theo Chúa Giêsu!
Đừng sợ lại gần Chúa ... Đừng sợ ‘cuộc sống mới’ mà Chúa muốn trao cho
các bạn vì chính Ngài cho các bạn đủ sức đón nhận và thực hiện cuộc sống
ấy, Ngài ban ân sủng của Ngài và Thánh thần của Ngài cho các bạn.</span></p>

Đức Thánh Cha lại lấy gương thánh nữ Têrêxa Hài đồng Giêsu để soi sáng

Têrêxa sống trong “quả tim” của Hội thánh, và triệt để chọn Đức Kitô.</span></p>

Cậu bé trong Phúc âm đã có sự chọn lựa triệt để ấy, cậu đã hiến dâng tất
cả: Năm chiếc bánh và hai con cá, trong tay Chúa Giêsu với lòng tin
tưởng. Thế rồi Chúa Giêsu đã làm “việc của Chúa”: với chừng ấy, Ngài đã
nuôi cả năm ngàn, cả vạn người!</span></p>

lòng thương vô hạn,</span></p>

Chúa gọi con theo Chúa,</span></p>

làm con Chúa, làm môn đệ Chúa.</span></p>

Rồi Chúa trao cho con một sứ mạng.</span></p>

Không ai giống ai, nhưng cùng một mục đích</span></p>

làm tông đồ, làm chứng nhân cho Chúa.</span></p>

Tuy nhiên, kinh nghiệm bản thân cho con thấy,</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 150%; margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif">
nhiều lần con lẫn lộn hai điều này:</span></p>

Chúa và việc của Chúa.</span></p>

Chúa trao cho con công việc của Chúa,</span></p>

cao trọng có, khiêm tốn có,</span></p>

tầm cỡ có, bình dân có.</span></p>

Con làm mục vụ giáo xứ,</span></p>

mục vụ giới trẻ, mục vụ học đường,</span></p>

mục vụ nghệ thuật, mục vụ gia đình,</span></p>

<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif">
mục vụ thanh niên, mục vụ lao động,</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 150%; margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif">
mục vụ truyền thông.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 150%; margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif">
Con đổ vào đó tất cả nhiệt tình,</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 150%; margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif">
tất cả những gì có thể được.</span></p>

Con không tiếc một điều gì, kể cả mạng sống con.</span></p>

Giữa lúc con tận tụy, hăng say như thế,</span></p>

con gặp thất bại ê chề.</span></p>

người ta vô ơn, vì không ai chịu cộng tác,</span></p>

bạn bè hiểu lầm, vì bề trên không nâng đỡ,</span></p>

bịnh tật ốm đau, vì thiếu phương tiện...</span></p>

lúc con đang trên đà thành công rực rỡ,</span></p>

mọi người hân hoan ca ngợi con, quyến luyến con.</span></p>

Thì đùng một cái,</span></p>

con phải thuyên chuyển,</span></p>

Sao Chúa bỏ con?</span></p>

Con không muốn bỏ dở việc Chúa,</span></p>

con phải làm cho hoàn thành việc Chúa.</span></p>

Phải xây xong thánh đường, tổ chức xong hội đoàn...</span></p>

Tại sao người ta phá việc Chúa?</span></p>

Không ủng hộ việc Chúa vô cùng chính đáng?</span></p>

Nhưng trước bàn thờ</span></p>
