Tên tôi là Phanxicô Nguyễn Văn Thuận, người Việt Nam. Đối với người
ngoại quốc tên tôi khó đọc, nên ở Tanjania, Nigeria, Đại Hàn, Đài Loan,
các bạn trẻ gọi tôi là “Bác Francis” (Uncle Francis) hay đơn giản hơn
nữa là “Francis!”</span></p>

Đến 23-4-1975 tôi làm Giám mục đã được tám năm, tại Nha Trang, Trung
phần Việt Nam, Giáo phận đầu tiên Tòa Thánh trao phó cho tôi. Tôi đã
sống những ngày tháng hạnh phúc ở đó và Nha Trang vẫn chiếm một chỗ đặc
biệt trong quả tim tôi. Ngày 23-4-1975, Đức Phaolô VI đã đặt tôi làm
Tổng Giám mục phó Sàigòn. Khi cộng sản đến Sàigòn, họ đã bảo rằng: “Việc
bổ nhiệm một Giám mục một tuần trước khi chúng tôi đến Sàigòn là một âm
mưu giữa Vatican và đế quốc, nhằm tổ chức chống cộng sau này”.</span></p>

tháng sau, ngày 15-8-1975, tôi được mời vào Dinh Độc lập lúc 2 giờ chiều
và bị bắt ở đó.</span></p>

Đêm đó, trên đường dài 450 km, xe công an chở tôi về nơi quản thúc. Bao
nhiêu tâm tình lẫn lộn trong đầu óc tôi: lo lắng có, cô đơn có, mệt mỏi
có, sau mấy tháng căng thẳng...nhưng trong trí tôi, một quyết định sáng
tỏ đã đánh tan mây mù. Tôi nhớ lời Đức Cha John Walsh, một Giám mục
truyền giáo gốc Mỹ, đã nói lúc ngài được tự do sau 12 năm tù ở Trung
cộng: “Tôi đã mất nữa đời người để chờ đợi”. Rất đúng! tất cả mọi tù
nhân, trong đó có tôi, phút giây nào cũng mong đợi tự do. Suy nghĩ kỹ,
trên chiếc xe Toyota trắng, tôi đã đặt cho mình một quyết định: “Tôi sẽ
không chờ đợi. Tôi sống phút hiện tại và làm cho nó đầy tình thương”.</span></p>

Đây không phải là một cảm hứng đột xuất, nhưng là một xác tín đã ấp ủ
suốt quãng đời mãi từ tiểu chủng viện: “Nếu tôi mất giờ đợi chờ, không
làm gì hết, biết đâu những điều tôi đợi sẽ không bao giờ đến. Chỉ có một
điều, dù không đợi cũng vẫn đến, đó là sự chết!”</span></p>

Trong làng Cây Vông, nơi tôi bị quản thúc, ngày đêm có nhân viên an ninh
chìm nổi theo dõi. Trong óc một tư tưởng không ngừng làm tôi xót xa,
thao thức: “Giáo dân của tôi! một đoàn chiên hoang mang, giữa bao hiểm
nguy, thách đố của một giai đoạn lịch sử mới. Làm sao tôi có thể gần
gủi, liên lạc với họ, trong giai đoạn họ cần đến người mục tử nhất! Các
nhà sách Công giáo bị đóng cửa, trường học Công giáo do Nhà nước quản
lý, tôn giáo sẽ không còn được dạy dỗ trong các trường nữa; các linh
mục, sư huynh, nữ tu có khả năng phải đi ra thôn quê, đi nông trường lao
động, không được dạy học nữa! Sự xa lìa giáo dân là một cú “sốc” giày vò
tan nát quả tim tôi.</span></p>

Nhưng làm thế nào?</span></p>

Một đêm, một tia sáng đến với tôi: “Con hãy bắt chước thánh Phaolô. Khi
ngài ở tù, không hoạt động tông đồ được, ngài đã viết thư cho các giáo
đoàn. Đơn giản vậy mà con đi tìm đâu cho xa?”</span></p>

Sáng hôm sau, vừa mới tinh sương, giữa tháng 10 năm 1975, tôi làm hiệu
cho một cậu bé 7 tuổi, tên Quang, vừa đi lễ 5 giờ ra, trời còn mù và
lạnh: “Quang! con về nói má con mua cho ông mấy “bloc” lịch cũ, ông cần
dùng”. Chiều tối, chú bé mang lại mấy “bloc” lịch cũ. Thế là mỗi đêm
trong tháng 10 và tháng 11, 1975, tôi đã đóng hết cửa, lấy giấy xi-măng
dán bên trong và viết “Sứ điệp từ ngục tù” cho giáo dân của tôi, dưới
ánh đèn dầu leo lét, mặc cho muỗi tha hồ đốt. Mỗi sáng thực sớm tôi trao
cho bé Quang, mấy tờ lịch tôi đã viết sau lưng, mang về cho anh, chị của
Quang chép lại kẻo mất. Nếu để trên bàn tôi, “ông An” (một giáo dân)
thấy sẽ sinh tai họa. Đấy là đầu đuôi sách “Đường Hy Vọng”, sứ điệp lao
tù thành hình là như thế. Hiện nay sách đã được xuất bản bằng tám thứ
tiếng.</span></p>

Chúa đã ban ơn cho tôi có nghị lực để tiếp tục làm việc, kể cả những lúc
chán nản nhất. Tôi đã viết đêm ngày trong một tháng rưỡi, vì tôi sẽ bị
“chuyển trại” và không có điều kiện hoàn tất được. Lúc viết đến số 1001
tôi quyết dừng lại, xem đây như công trình “nghìn lẻ một đêm”. Ngày
8-12-1975, lễ Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm Tội, tôi đã tạ ơn Đức Mẹ cho tôi viết xong
“Đường Hy Vọng” và trao trong tay Đức Mẹ gìn giữ, đó là của Đức Mẹ, nhờ
ơn của Đức Mẹ, xin Đức Mẹ tiếp tục lo liệu. Đoán vậy mà không sai, đến
ngày 18-3-1976, tôi bị đưa vào trại Phú Khánh, biệt giam vất vả nhất.</span></p>

Năm 1980, lúc bị đưa ra quản thúc ở Giang Xá, Bắc Việt, tôi đã tiếp tục
viết mỗi đêm trong bí mật cuốn thứ hai, “Đường Hy Vọng Dưới Anh Sáng Lời
Chúa và Công Đồng Vatican II”, cuốn thứ ba, “Những Người Lữ Hành Trên
Đường Hy Vọng”.</span></p>

Trong Phúc âm, các Tông đồ muốn chọn con đường dễ nhất, khỏe nhất: “Xin
Thầy cho dân chúng về, để họ mua thức ăn”...Nhưng Chúa Giêsu muốn hành
động trong phút hiện tại: “Chính các con hãy cho họ ăn đi” (Lc 9, 1).
Trên thánh giá, khi người ăn trộm thưa với Chúa Giêsu: “Thưa Ngài, khi
về thiên đàng xin Ngài nhớ đến tôi”. Chúa Giêsu đáp: “Hôm nay con sẽ ở
cùng Ta trên nước thiên đàng” (Lc 23, 42-43). Trong tiếng “hôm nay” của
Chúa Giêsu, tôi cảm thấy tất cả sự tha thứ, tất cả tình thương của Ngài.</span></p>

Cha Maximiliano Kolbe sống tinh thần ấy khi ngài khuyên các tập sinh
trong dòng: “Tất cả, tuyệt đối, không điều kiện”. Tôi đã nghe Đức Cha
Helder Camara nói: “Cả cuộc đời là học yêu thương”. Một lần Mẹ Têrêxa
Calcutta gửi thư cho tôi, Mẹ viết: “Điều quan trọng không phải là số
công tác đã thực hiện nhưng là mức độ tình yêu ta đã để vào mỗi công
việc”.</span></p>

Làm sao yêu thương đến cao độ như thế trong mỗi phút hiện tại? Tôi nghĩ
rằng tôi phải sống mỗi ngày, mỗi giờ, mỗi phút như là giờ phút cuối cùng
của đời tôi. Dẹp bỏ những gì là phụ thuộc, tập trung cả tâm hồn cho
những gì là chính yếu. Mỗi lời nói, mỗi tư tưởng, mỗi cử chỉ, mỗi cú
điện thoại, mỗi quyết định phải là “đẹp nhất” của đời tôi. Tôi phải dành
cho mỗi người tình yêu của tôi, nụ cười của tôi: tôi phải lo sợ đánh mất
một giây phút nào trong đời mình vì đã sống không ý nghĩa...</span></p>

Tôi đã viết trong sách Đường Hy Vọng: “Con chỉ có một giây phút đẹp
nhất: giây phút hiện tại (x Mt 6, 34; Gc 4, 13-15). Sống trong tình yêu
Chúa cách trọn vẹn, đời con sẽ tuyệt đẹp nếu kết tinh bằng từng triệu
giây phút đẹp nhất. Con thấy đơn sơ, không phải khó (ĐHV 997).</span></p>

Các bạn trẻ thân mến, trong thời đại này, Chúa Giêsu cần đến các bạn.
Đức Gioan Phaolô II tha thiết kêu gọi các bạn hãy đương đầu với những
thách đố của thế giới hôm nay:</span></p>

Chúng ta đang sống trong một giai đoạn đầy biến chuyển kinh khủng. Những
lý thuyết được xem là đủ sức thi gan cùng tuế nguyệt nay đã đến lúc xế
chiều. Trên hoàn cầu, cần phải phác họa lại ranh giới của nhiều quốc
gia. Nhân loại tự cảm thấy mình rất lúng túng, hốt hoảng, lo lắng (Mt 9,
36). Nhưng lời Chúa không bao giờ qua đi; đọc lại lịch sử, chúng ta thấy
bao nhiêu biến cố thăng trầm, đang lúc ấy lời Chúa đứng vững và chiếu
sáng (Mt 24, 35). Đức tin của Hội thánh được xây dựng trên Chúa Giêsu
Kitô, Đấng Cứu thế độc nhất: hôm qua hôm nay và mãi mãi (Eb 13, 18).</span></p>
