<font face="Arial"> Bethlehem, nơi Chúa Giêsu Kitô xuống thế làm người, nằm
trên đỉnh một ngọn đồi từ đó khách du lịch có thể thấy một quang cảnh ngoạn
mục của Bờ Tây và Biển Chết. Chỉ cách Jerusalem 7 cây số, nhưng Bethlehem bị
tách biệt hẳn môi trường xung quanh. Các bức tường, công sự, các trạm kiểm
soát và những chướng ngại khác được thiết lập bởi Israel đã biến Bethlehem
thành một hòn đảo trôi dạt giữa trung tâm của khu vực Tây Ngạn sông Jordan,
thường được gọi tắt là khu Bờ Tây hay West Bank.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Arial">Bất chấp những chướng ngại như thế, Bethlehem là nơi gặp
gỡ, tụ họp hàng năm cho lễ hội Giáng Sinh. Tại quảng trường Máng Cỏ, một cây
thông Giáng Sinh lớn được thắp sáng trong một buổi lễ rất “hoành tráng” quy
tụ đông đảo các chính trị gia và các nhóm khác nhau trong xã hội Palestine.
</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Arial">Trong không khí miền núi lạnh và nhiều gió, những người
Palestine và các khách du lịch từ khắp nơi trên thế giới đến với nhau để ăn
mừng, và tạm thời quên đi những ưu phiền trong cuộc đời của họ. Thật vậy,
quý vị và anh chị em có thể thấy những hình ảnh rất tưng bừng trong cuộc
rước Giáng Sinh truyền thống diễn ra chỉ một vài ngày trước đây.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Arial">Kính thưa quý vị và anh chị em,</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Quay trở lại những năm 1990, khi niềm hy vọng cho tiến
trình hòa bình vẫn còn sống động, khách du lịch từ khắp nơi trên thế giới đổ
về thành phố này trong suốt hàng mấy tháng trước lễ Giáng Sinh. Người ta háo
hức đến thăm các thánh tích của Kitô giáo, và biến Bethlehem thành một trung
tâm du lịch tưng bừng với hàng trăm ngàn khách hành hương tấp nập dạo quanh
Bờ Tây và Jerusalem. Việc xây dựng các bức tường ngăn cách của Israel và hơn
300 trạm kiểm soát khét tiếng đã tách biệt Bethlehem khỏi Jerusalem và đặt
dấu chấm hết cho sự bùng nổ du lịch này.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Arial">Hôm nay, thành phố đang bị đè bẹp bởi tỷ lệ thất nghiệp
cao và một tương lai không có chút gì là sáng sủa. Thành phố được bao quanh
bởi 22 khu định cư của Israel - một số có thể sẽ trở thành một phần của
Israel dưới thời chính phủ cánh hữu hiện nay trong một ma trận phức tạp của
các trạm kiểm soát và rào cản do Israel dựng lên. Cùng với một ngành du lịch
càng ngày thu hẹp lại, triển vọng của Bethlehem và cũng là triển vọng của
cộng đoàn Kitô bé nhỏ tại đây không mấy tươi sáng.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Arial">Tuy thế, thực tế nghiệt ngã này không làm nản tinh thần
Giáng Sinh. Trong hai tuần đầu tiên của tháng Mười Hai năm nay, người ta vẫn
thấy các du khách dũng cảm vượt qua các trạm kiểm soát, các phòng khách sạn
gần đầy và mọi người lại tưng bừng thưởng thức không khí lễ hội tại quảng
trường Máng Cỏ. Trong nhiều năm qua, chính quyền Palestine đã thiếu kinh phí
để dựng cây cây Giáng sinh to lớn tại quảng trường này. Các doanh nghiệp địa
phương và tất cả các tôn giáo đã cùng góp công, góp của với chính quyền
Palestine tài trợ cho lễ kỷ niệm này trong một cử chỉ ấm áp của tình đoàn

sinh này. Đối với nhiều người, ký ức về Bethlehem chỉ thu gọn trong quá khứ.
Bethlehem là nơi Thiên Chúa đã giáng trần hơn 2000 năm trước trong một
chuồng gia súc sau khi con người đã đóng chặt cửa không tiếp rước Người.

thành phố này đã phải chịu đựng nhiều năm dưới sức nặng làm tê liệt của sự
chiếm đóng của Israel. Khi chính phủ Israel càng ra sức tìm cách kiểm soát
Bethlehem, sự hiện diện của các tín hữu Kitô trong miền đất nơi Ngôi Hai
Thiên Chúa giáng trần càng lúc càng khó khăn hơn.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Suốt hơn 2,000 năm qua, người dân Bethlehem đã tổ chức kỷ
niệm biến cố Chúa giáng thế làm người với hy vọng và một thông điệp hòa
bình. Nếu người dân Bethlehem có thể đến với nhau trong sự hiệp nhất và hòa
bình dưới những điều kiện bị áp bức như thế, thì vẫn còn có chút hy vọng cho
thế giới.</font></td>
