Thánh và biện giải tôn giáo thuộc Đại học Tây Nam Trinity (Anh), đã dẫn đầu
đoàn nghiên cứu có tên TeHEP tiến hành khai quật. TờIndependent UK dẫn lời
ông Collins cho hay khu di tích khổng lồ Tall el-Hammam ở phía nam Thung
lũng Jordan. Theo trang Popular Archeology, học giả Anh liệt kê những điểm
mà ông cho rằng Tall el-Hammam hoàn toàn trùng khớp với những đặc điểm của
Sodom, mà theo Cựu Ước đã bị thiêu hủy trong biển lửa cùng với thành phố
láng giềng Gomorrah.</font></p>

2005, giáo sư Collins rút ra kết luận: “Nếu có ai muốn tìm Sodom thì họ nên
đi tìm thành phố lớn nhất nằm ở miền tây Kikkar từng tồn tại vào thời đại đồ
đồng, giai đoạn diễn ra câu chuyện tranh chấp giữa hai người chăn cừu là
Abraham và Lot. Khi chúng tôi thám hiểm thực địa, việc lựa chọn Tall el
Hammam là ứng viên tiềm năng cho vị trí của Sodom là điều hoàn toàn hiển
nhiên, vì nơi này rộng ít nhất gấp 5 đến 10 lần so với các địa điểm có từ
thời đồ đồng khác trong toàn khu vực”. Nơi này cũng cách Biển Chết khoảng 13
km về hướng đông bắc, một chi tiết phù hợp với miêu tả trong Kinh Thánh về
thành phố thời đại đồ đồng.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Tall el-Hammam được cho là có niên đại từ 3.500 đến 1.540
năm trước công nguyên. Khu di tích này hiện chỉ tồn tại dưới dạng một gò đất
lớn, nhưng trước đây có thể từng là nơi đặt hai thành phố, một thấp hơn và
một ở trên cao để cho thấy sự phân biệt giai cấp hết sức rõ ràng vào thời đó,
theo trang tin Sky News. Các nhà nghiên cứu tìm thấy những bức tường thành

trường, cũng như một “cung điện đỏ” tại thành phố trên cao hơn. Hàng triệu
viên gạch đã được sử dụng để đắp các tầng thành lũy dày nhằm bảo vệ giới
thượng lưu và tầng lớp giàu có ở thành phố trên cao, nơi không những đặt
cung điện của người trị vì, mà còn chứa các đền thờ và những tòa nhà của
tầng lớp thống trị. Trong giai đoạn giữa của thời đại đồ đồng, bức tường dày
5 m đã được thay thế bằng những bức tường lớn hơn, với bề ngang phải lên đến
7m, chạy bao quanh thành phố.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Những ngày cuối cùng của thành phố Sodom đã được ghi lại
trong Kinh Thánh, mô tả đầy đủ sự thất bại của các thiên thần khi muốn tìm
10 cư dân có tấm lòng thiện lương trong thành, và cuối cùng họ đã quyết định
cứu Lot bằng cách thúc giục ông này đưa gia đình chạy khỏi thành phố trước
khi lửa trời giáng xuống. Vợ của Lot đã bị biến thành tượng muối do quay đầu
nhìn về hướng Sodom trong biển lửa. Có nhiều diễn giải khác nhau về tội lỗi
mà dân Sodom đã phạm phải và buộc Đức Chúa Trời phải ra tay hủy diệt, chẳng
hạn thái độ không hiếu khách với người lạ. Kinh Thánh còn ghi lại Thiên Chúa
đã chôn vùi Sodom và một thành phố khác tên Gomorrah bằng lưu huỳnh. Thêm
một yếu tố chứng thực cho nội dung được viết trong sách Sáng Thế, các nhà
khảo cổ học xác định “sự sống tại thành phố này dường như đã đột ngột biến
mất gần cuối thời đại đồ đồng giữa, và bị bỏ hoang hoàn toàn suốt 700 năm”.
Để rút ra kết luận đó, họ cho biết hầu như hiếm khi tìm được những đồ tạo
tác thuộc về các thời đại khác so với những địa điểm còn lại trong khu vực.</font></p>

ngàn năm. Theo các chuyên gia, cần phải tận dụng mọi nguồn lực có thể nếu
muốn nhìn lại quá khứ, và nhờ vào cách tiếp cận này mà các di tích lịch sử
quan trọng khác của Jordan cũng đã được tìm thấy, bao gồm Heshbon, Aroer,
Dibon, Nebo và Bethany Beyond Jordan.</font></td>
