Kính thưa Đức Thánh Cha, Michelle và tôi xin chào mừng Ngài đến với Nhà

và trên toàn thế giới. Thay lời cho người dân Mỹ, thật là vinh dự lớn lao và

là chuyến thăm nước Mỹ đầu tiên của Ngài. Và Ngài cũng là vị Giáo Hoàng đầu
tiên chia sẻ Thông Điệp trên Twitter.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Thưa Đức Thánh Cha, chuyến thăm của Ngài không chỉ cho
phép tôi, trong cách thế khiêm tốn, đáp lại lòng hiếu khách đặc biệt mà Ngài
rộng mở với tôi tại Vatican năm ngoái. Nó cũng cho thấy biết bao người dân
Mỹ, từ mọi nền văn hóa và thuộc mọi niềm tin, quý trọng vai trò của Giáo Hội
Công Giáo trong việc phát triển đất nước. Ngay từ thời tôi làm việc tại các
khu phố nghèo cùng với Giáo Hội Công Giáo tại Chicago, đến thời tôi làm Tổng
Thống, tôi đã tận mắt thấy cung cách mà mỗi ngày, các cộng đồng Công Giáo,
các linh mục, các nữ tu, và các giáo dân nuôi những người đói khát, chữa
lành người đau ốm, che chở người vô gia cư, giáo dục các trẻ em, và củng cố
đức tin nâng đỡ rất nhiều người.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Điều ấy thật đúng trên đất Mỹ, cũng đúng trên toàn thế
giới. Từ đường phố nhộn nhịp của Buenos Aires tới ngôi làng xa xôi ở Kenya,
các tổ chức Công Giáo phục vụ người nghèo, giúp đỡ các tù nhân, xây dựng các
trường học và nhà ở, thành lập các cô nhi viện và các bệnh viện. Và khi Giáo
Hội đứng về phía những người đấu tranh để phá vỡ xiềng xích của nghèo đói,
thì đó cũng là tiếng nói và niềm hy vọng cho những ai đang tìm cách bẻ gãy
xiềng xích của bạo lực và áp bức.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Tuy nhiên, tôi tin rằng, niềm vui nồng nhiệt xung quanh
chuyến viếng thăm của Ngài phải được ghi nhận, không chỉ do vai trò của Ngài
trong tư cách là Giáo Hoàng, mà còn do những phẩm tính độc đáo của Ngài
trong tư cách là một con người. Với lòng khiêm tốn của Ngài, Ngài mang lấy
một sự đơn sơ, lịch thiệp trong lời nói và sự quảng đại trong tinh thần,
chúng tôi nhìn thấy một mẫu gương sống động cho những lời giảng dạy của Chúa
Giêsu, Đấng là vị lãnh đạo có thẩm quyền luân lý không chỉ trong lời nói mà
còn trong hành động.</font></p>

Công Giáo, đặt “người nhỏ bé nhất” vào tâm điểm của sự quan tâm của chúng
ta. Ngài nhắc chúng ta rằng, trong cái nhìn của Thiên Chúa, sự đo lường của

<font face="Arial">Ngài nhắc chúng ta nhớ rằng “sứ điệp mạnh mẽ nhất của
Thiên Chúa” là lòng thương xót. Điều ấy có nghĩa là chào đón người lạ với sự
đồng cảm và con tim rộng mở, từ những người tị nạn phải rời bỏ quê hương vì
chiến tranh tàn phá, đến những người nhập cư phải rời bỏ nhà cửa để đi tìm
cuộc sống tốt hơn. Điều ấy có nghĩa là diễn tả sự cảm thông và tình yêu với
những người chịu thiệt thòi và bị gạt ra bên lề, với những người chịu đau
khổ, với những người đang tìm sự cứu độ.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Ngài nhắc chúng ta nhớ về cái giá phải trả cho chiến
tranh, đặc biệt là những người cô thế và người không có khả năng tự vệ, và
thúc giục chúng ta hướng tới tính khẩn thiết của hòa bình. Thưa Đức Thánh
Cha, chúng tôi biết ơn Ngài vì sự nâng đỡ vô giá mà Ngài dành cho chúng tôi
trong những bước khởi đầu với nhân dân Cuba, với lời hứa cho mối tương quan
tốt hơn giữa hai quốc gia, cho sự hợp tác hơn nữa, và cho đời sống tốt hơn
với người dân Cuba. Chúng tôi cám ơn Ngài vì tiếng nói đầy nhiệt huyết của

<font face="Arial">Ngài nhắc chúng ta nhớ rằng, con người chỉ thực sự tự do
khi họ có thể thực hành đức tin của mình cách tự do. Ở nước Mỹ này, chúng ta
trân quý tự do tôn giáo. Thế nhưng, trên thế giới ngay lúc này đây, những
người con của Chúa, kể cả các Kitô hữu, bị phân biệt đối xử, thậm chí bị
giết chết vì đức tin của mình. Các tín hữu bị ngăn cản, không được tụ họp
tại nơi thờ phượng. Họ bị tù đày. Các nhà thờ bị phá hủy. Vì thế, chúng tôi
cùng với Ngài đứng về phía bảo vệ tự do tôn giáo và thúc đẩy đối thoại liên
tôn, biết rằng mọi người ở mọi nơi phải có khả năng sống đức tin cách tự do
khỏi nỗi sợ hãi và khỏi sự đe dọa.</font></p>

ta có bổn phận thánh thiêng bảo vệ hành tinh của chúng ta. Đây là món quà
tuyệt với Thiên Chúa dành cho chúng ta. Chúng tôi ủng hộ lời mời gọi của
Ngài đối với các nhà lãnh đạo thế giới, cho việc nâng đỡ những cộng đồng dễ
bị tổn thương nhất trong sự biến đổi khí hậu, cho việc xích lại gần nhau để
bảo vệ thế giới của chúng ta cho các thế hệ tương lai.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Với sự Thánh Thiện, trong lời nói và hành động của Ngài,
Ngài là tấm gương đạo đức sâu sắc. Và với những lời nhắc nhẹ nhàng nhưng
kiên quyết về bổn phận của chúng ta với Thiên Chúa và với nhau, Ngài đang
lôi kéo chúng ta ra khỏi sự tự mãn. Tất cả chúng ta, nhiều lần, có thể kinh
nghiệm sự khó chịu, khi chúng ta nhận thấy khoảng cách giữa cung cách sống
hằng ngày với những gì chúng ta biết là thật là đúng. Nhưng tôi tin rằng, sự
khó chịu ấy là một phúc lành, vì nó chỉ ra cho chúng ta điều gì đó tốt hơn.
Ngài đánh thức lương tâm chúng ta khỏi giấc ngủ mơ; Ngài mời gọi chúng ta
vui trong Tin Mừng, và trao tặng chúng ta sự tự tin để đến với nhau, trong
khiêm tốn và phục vụ, và theo đuổi một thế giới yêu thương hơn, công bằng
hơn, và tự do hơn. Ở đây và trên khắp thế giới, cầu chúc cho thế hệ chúng ta
lưu tâm đến lời mời gọi của Ngài để “không bao giờ đứng bên ngoài chuỗi hy
vọng sống động này!”</font></p>
