<font face="Arial">Hôm nay chúng ta mừng lễ Thánh Matthêu tông đồ, thánh sử.
Chúng ta đang cử hành một câu chuyện hoán cải. Chính Thánh Matthêu, trong
Phúc Âm của ngài, cho chúng ta biết cuộc gặp gỡ biến đổi cuộc đời ngài đã
xảy ra như thế nào. Ngài cho chúng ta thấy một “ánh mắt trao đổi” có khả
năng thay đổi lịch sử ra sao.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Vào một ngày như mọi ngày, khi Matthêu, người thu thuế,
đã ngồi vào bàn làm việc của mình, thì Chúa Giêsu đi ngang qua. Nhìn thấy
ông, Ngài tiến lại và nói: “Hãy theo Ta”. Matthêu đứng dậy và đi theo Ngài.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Chúa Giêsu nhìn vào ông. Sức mạnh của tình yêu trong cái
nhìn đó của Chúa Giêsu mạnh mẽ biết bao đến nỗi đã khiến Matthêu làm như
thế! Uy lực nào trong mắt Ngài đã làm cho Matthêu đứng dậy khỏi bàn của ông!
Chúng ta biết Matthêu là một người thu thuế: Ông lấy tiền thuế của những
người Do Thái để nộp cho người La Mã. Những người thu thuế bị xem thường và
bị xem là những kẻ tội lỗi; vì thế, họ phải sống tách biệt và bị người khác
khinh thường. Hiếm khi người ta ngồi đồng bàn ăn uống, nói chuyện hay cầu
nguyện chung với những người như thế. Đối với dân chúng, họ là những kẻ phản
bội: họ lấy tiền của dân để nộp cho ngoại bang. Những người thu thuế thuộc
tầng lớp xã hội này.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Ngưọc lại, Chúa Giêsu, đã dừng lại; Người đã không nhanh
chóng giữ khoảng cách với ông. Ngài nhìn Matthêu bình thản, yên bình. Ngài
nhìn ông với đôi mắt của lòng thương xót; Ngài nhìn ông với cái nhìn ông
chưa từng thấy ai nhìn mình như thế. Và cái nhìn này mở khóa trái tim
Matthêu; nó giải thoát ông, nó chữa lành ông, và nó ban cho ông một niềm hy
vọng, một cuộc sống mới, như cái nhìn ấy đã thực hiện trên ông Giakêu, trên
người mù Bartimaeus, trên Maria Magdalena, trên Phêrô, và trên mỗi người
trong chúng ta. Ngay cả khi chúng ta không dám ngước mắt nhìn lên Chúa, là
Đấng đã nhìn chúng ta trước. Đây là câu chuyện của chúng ta, và cũng là câu
chuyện của cơ man biết bao những người khác. Mỗi người trong chúng ta có thể
nói: “Cả tôi nữa, tôi cũng là một kẻ có tội, nhưng Chúa Giêsu đã nhìn đến
tôi”. Tôi xin anh chị em, khi đang ở nhà hoặc trong nhà thờ, hãy dành ra một
lúc yên tĩnh để nhớ lại với lòng biết ơn và niềm hạnh phúc những tình huống

<font face="Arial">Tình yêu của Chúa Giêsu đi trước chúng ta, cái nhìn của
Ngài thấy trước nhu cầu của chúng ta. Ngài có thể nhìn thấy xa hơn vẻ bề
ngoài của chúng ta, xa hơn những tội lỗi, thất bại và bất xứng của chúng ta.
Ngài nhìn xa hơn giai tầng trong xã hội của chúng ta. Ngài nhìn xa hơn những
điều này để hướng đến phẩm giá của chúng ta như những con trai, con gái của
Ngài, hướng đến một phẩm giá đôi khi bị hoen ố vì tội lỗi, nhưng vẫn tồn tại
trong sâu thẳm tâm hồn chúng ta. Ngài đến chính là để kiếm tìm tất cả những
ai cảm thấy mình không xứng đáng với Thiên Chúa, không xứng đáng với những
người khác. Chúng ta hãy để Chúa Giêsu nhìn đến chúng ta. Chúng ta hãy để
ánh mắt của Ngài nhìn đến phố phường của chúng ta. Chúng ta hãy để ánh mắt
đó trở thành niềm vui của chúng ta, hy vọng của chúng ta.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Sau khi Chúa nhìn ông với ánh mắt xót thương, Ngài nói
với Matthêu: “Hãy theo Ta.” Matthêu đứng dậy và đi theo Ngài. Sau cái nhìn,
là một lời nói. Sau tình yêu, là sứ vụ. Matthêu không còn là Matthêu của quá
khứ; ông đang thay đổi từ bên trong. Cuộc gặp gỡ với Chúa Giêsu và lòng
thương xót yêu thương của Ngài đã biến đổi ông. Ông để lại phía sau bàn thu
thuế của mình, tiền bạc, và não trạng sống cho riêng mình. Trước đây, ông
ngồi chờ đợi để thu thuế, để lấy từ những người khác. Ngày nay, với Chúa
Giêsu, ông đứng dậy và cho đi, trao ban chính mình cho người khác. Chúa
Giêsu nhìn ông và Matthêu gặp được niềm vui của sự phục vụ. Đối với Matthêu,
và tất cả những ai đã cảm thấy cái nhìn của Chúa Giêsu, tha nhân không còn
là những người để “sống bám”, để sử dụng và lạm dụng. Cái nhìn của Chúa
Giêsu mang lại hoạt động truyền giáo, sự phục vụ, và sự cho đi chính mình.
Tình yêu của Chúa Giêsu chữa lành cái nhìn thiển cận của chúng ta và thúc
đẩy chúng ta phải nhìn xa hơn, không được hài lòng với vẻ bề ngoài hay với
những gì là đúng về mặt chính trị.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Chúa Giêsu đi trước chúng ta, Ngài tiến bước trước chúng
ta; Ngài mở đường cho chúng ta và mời gọi chúng ta bước theo Ngài. Ngài mời
gọi chúng ta từ từ vượt qua những định kiến của mình và sự miễn cưỡng chấp
nhận rằng những người khác thua kém chúng ta có thể thay đổi. Ngài thách
thức chúng ta hàng ngày với câu hỏi: “Bạn có tin không? Bạn có tin rằng một
người thu thuế có thể có thể trở thành một người tôi tớ không? Bạn có tin
rằng một kẻ phản bội có thể trở thành một người bạn không? Bạn có tin là con
trai của một người thợ mộc có thể là Con Thiên Chúa không? Ánh mắt Ngài biến
đổi cách chúng ta nhìn sự vật, trái tim của Ngài biến đổi tâm hồn chúng ta.
Thiên Chúa là Cha, là Đấng tìm kiếm ơn cứu rỗi cho mỗi người con trai, con
gái của Ngài.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Chúng ta hãy chiêm ngắm Chúa trong lời cầu nguyện, trong
Bí Tích Thánh Thể, trong Bí Tích Hòa Giải, trong anh chị em của chúng ta,
đặc biệt nơi những ai cảm thấy bị loại trừ hoặc bị bỏ rơi. Xin cho chúng ta
có thể biết cách nhìn họ như Chúa Giêsu nhìn chúng ta. Hãy để chúng ta chia
sẻ sự dịu dàng và thương xót của Ngài với các bệnh nhân, tù nhân, người già
và những gia đình gặp khó khăn. Chúng ta được kêu gọi luôn mãi để học hỏi từ
Chúa Giêsu, Đấng luôn nhìn thấy những gì là xác thực nhất trong mỗi con
người, được tác thành theo hình ảnh của Cha Ngài.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Tôi biết những nỗ lực và những hy sinh của Giáo Hội tại
Cuba để mang lời Chúa Kitô và sự hiện diện của Ngài đến cho mọi người, ngay
cả nơi những miền heo hút nhất. Ở đây, tôi muốn nhắc đặc biệt đến là “những
ngôi nhà truyền giáo”, mà vì sự thiếu hụt các nhà thờ và linh mục, đang mang
lại cho nhiều người một nơi chốn cho việc cầu nguyện, cho việc lắng nghe Lời
Chúa, cho việc dạy giáo lý và cho đời sống cộng đoàn. Những ngôi nhà truyền
giáo này là những dấu chỉ nho nhỏ về sự hiện diện của Thiên Chúa nơi những
người lân cận với chúng ta và là sự trợ giúp hàng ngày trong nỗ lực đáp lại
những lời cầu xin của thánh tông đồ Phaolô: “Tôi khuyên nhủ anh em hãy sống
cho xứng với ơn kêu gọi mà Thiên Chúa đã ban cho anh em. Anh em hãy ăn ở
thật khiêm tốn, hiền từ và nhẫn nại; hãy lấy tình bác ái mà chịu đựng lẫn
nhau. Anh em hãy thiết tha duy trì sự hiệp nhất mà Thần Khí đem lại, bằng
cách ăn ở thuận hoà gắn bó với nhau” (Eph 4: 1-3).</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Giờ đây, tôi hướng đến Đức Trinh Nữ Maria, Đức Mẹ Bác Ái
Mỏ Đồng, là Đấng Cuba đã đón nhận và sẽ mãi mãi mở rộng cửa đón tiếp. Tôi
xin Đức Mẹ nhìn với ánh mắt tình yêu từ mẫu trên tất cả những người con của
Mẹ trong đất nước cao thượng này. Xin “đôi mắt của lòng thương xót” luôn gìn
giữ mỗi người trong anh chị em, ngôi nhà, cũng như gia đình của anh chị em,
và tất cả những ai cảm thấy rằng họ không có một chỗ đứng. Trong tình yêu
của Mẹ, xin Mẹ bảo vệ chúng ta tất cả như Mẹ đã từng chăm sóc cho Chúa
