<font face="Arial">Cha Felix Varela sanh tại Havana năm 1788 và được chịu
chức linh mục tại nhà thờ chánh tòa Havana ở tuổi 23. Ngài nổi tiếng là một
người cổ võ cho nhân quyền, tự do của người nô lệ và độc lập cho Cuba khỏi
ách thống trị của Tây Ban Nha.</font></p>

loại hy vọng nào? Không có gì hơn hay kém niềm hy vọng của bất cứ người trẻ
nào tại bất cứ nơi nào trên thế giới. Vì hy vọng nói với ta về một điều gì
đó bén rễ sâu trong mọi trái tim con người, độc lập với các hoàn cảnh cụ thể
và điều kiện lịch sử của ta. Hy vọng nói với chúng ta về nỗi khát mong, niềm

những lý tưởng lớn lao giúp làm cho đời ta nên tươi đẹp và đáng sống hơn.
Tôi muốn hỏi mỗi người trong các bạn: Điều gì lên khuôn đời các bạn? Điều gì
đang nằm sâu trong trái tim các bạn? Các hy vọng và khát vọng của các bạn
đặt ở đâu? Các bạn có sẵn sàng đặt mình lên tuyến phục vụ một điều gì đó lớn

tưởng đó lôi cuốn mạnh mẽ. Con cảm nhận được lời mời gọi của chúng, vẻ đẹp
của chúng, ánh sáng rạng rỡ của chúng trong trái tim con. Nhưng con thấy
mình yếu đuối quá, con chưa sẵn sàng quyết định đi theo con đường hy vọng.
Mục tiêu thì cao cả đấy nhưng sức con thì yếu quá đi. Tốt nhất là bằng lòng
với những điều nhỏ mọn, không cao cả gì nhưng thực tiễn hơn, trong vòng với
hơn". Tôi có thể hiểu được phản ứng này; cảm thấy bị trĩu nặng bởi khó khăn
và các điều quá đòi hỏi là chuyện thông thường thôi. Nhưng các bạn hãy ý tứ
đừng để mình bị cám dỗ mà nhụt chí là thứ làm tê liệt lý trí và ý chí ta,
hay lãnh cảm là hình thức bi quan triệt để trước tương lai. Các thái độ này
kết thúc ở chỗ một là trốn chạy khỏi thực tế mà sa vào ảo tưởng vô ích, hai
là ích kỷ tự cô lập hóa và hoài nghi bịt tai trước tiếng kêu than đòi công
lý, sự thật và tình người đang nổi lên giữa ta và trong chính ta.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Hy vọng là một con đường gồm cả ký ức lẫn biện phân. Hy
vọng là nhân đức để đi khắp nơi. Nó không đơn thuần là nẻo đường ta theo vì
thích nó, nhưng nó có một cùng đích, một mục tiêu rất thực tế và soi dẫn
đường ta đi. Hy vọng cũng được nuôi dưỡng bằng ký ức; nó không chỉ nhìn
tương lai mà còn nhìn cả dĩ vãng và hiện tại nữa. Để luôn tiến tới trong
đời, ngoài việc biết mình muốn đi đâu, ta cũng cần biết ta là ai và ta từ
đâu đến. Các cá nhân hay các dân tộc nào không có ký ức và xóa bỏ dĩ vãng
của mình đều liều mình đánh mất bản sắc và tiêu diệt tương lai của mình.
Thành thử ta cần nhớ ta là ai, và di sản thiêng liêng và luân lý của ta bao
gồm những gì. Tôi tin rằng điều này chính là kinh nghiệm và cái nhìn thông
sáng của Cha Félix Varela, người Cuba vĩ đại. Biện phân cũng cần thiết, vì
điều chủ yếu là cởi mở đối với thực tại và biết giải thích thực tại này mà
không sợ thiên kiến. Các giải thích phiến diện và có tính ý thức hệ là điều
vô ích; chúng chỉ làm méo mó thực tại bằng cách cố gắng nhét nó vào những
khuôn khổ tiên kiến, chỉ tổ gây thất vọng và tuyệt vọng. Ta cần biện phân và
ký ức, vì biện phân không mù quáng; nó được xây dựng trên các tiêu chuẩn đạo

<font face="Arial">Hy vọng là con đường ta cùng người khác tiếp nhận. Một
tục ngữ Phi Châu nói rằng: "Muốn đi nhanh, thì đi một mình; muốn đi xa, thì
đi với người khác". Cô lập và sống xa cách không bao giờ phát sinh được hy
vọng; nhưng gần gũi và gặp gỡ người khác thì có. Để một mình, ta sẽ không đi
tới đâu cả. Mà với loại trừ, ta cũng không thể xây dựng tương lai cho ai
được, cho cả ta cũng không. Đường hy vọng đòi phải có nền văn hóa gặp gỡ,
đối thoại, một nền văn hóa vốn có khả năng thắng vượt tranh chấp và kình
chống khô cằn. Muốn tạo ra nền văn hóa này, điều sinh tử là coi các phương
thức suy nghĩ khác nhau không hẳn là nguy cơ mà là phong phú và phát triển.
Thế giới cần nền văn hóa gặp gỡ này. Nó cần những người trẻ biết tìm cách
biết nhau và yêu nhau, cùng nhau đồng hành trong việc xây dựng xứ sở, một
cuộc hành trình mà José Martí từng mơ ước: “với mọi người, và vì lợi ích mọi
người".</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Hy vọng là con đường liên đới. Nền văn hóa gặp gỡ tự
nhiên sẽ dẫn ta tới nền văn hóa liên đới. Tôi rất thán phục trước điều
Leonardo nói lúc đầu, khi bạn ấy đề cập tới tình liên đới, coi nó như nguồn
tạo sức mạnh để lướt thắng mọi trở ngại. Không có liên đới, không nước nào
có tương lai cả. Vượt lên trên các tính toán và tư lợi khác, ta không những
phải quan tâm tới những người có thể là bằng hữu ta, người đồng hành với ta,
mà cả những ai suy nghĩ khác với ta, những ai có ý nghĩ riêng nhưng không
kém nhân bản và có tính Cuba như ta. Khoan dung không thôi chưa đủ; ta còn
phải đi xa hơn thế, từ thái độ nghi ngờ và phòng ngự phải tiến qua thái độ
chấp nhận, hợp tác, phục vụ cụ thể và giúp đỡ hữu hiệu. Đừng sợ liên đới,
phục vụ và giúp một tay, để không ai bị loại trừ khỏi con đường này.</font></p>

cao hơn: đó là niềm hy vọng phát sinh từ đức tin vào Chúa Kitô. Ngưòi tự làm
Người trở thành người đồng hành với ta. Không những Người khuyến khích ta,
Người còn đồng hành với ta nữa; Người ở bên cạnh ta và giơ bàn tay thân hữu
của Người cho ta. Là Con Thiên Chúa, Người muốn trở thành một người như ta,
đồng hành với ta trên đường. Niềm tin vào sự hiện diện của Người, vào tình
bạn và tình yêu của Người làm sáng lên mọi hy vọng và mọi giấc mơ của ta.
Với người cạnh bên, ta học được cách biện phân điều có thực, gặp gỡ và phục
vụ người khác, và bước theo con đường liên đới.</font></p>
