<font face="Arial">Sau lời kêu gọi của Đức Thánh Cha cho một "sự thay đổi
triệt để" trong việc khai thác mỏ nhằm bảo vệ người nghèo và đất đai của họ,
đại diện của một số các cộng đồng người Mỹ Latin bị ảnh hưởng bởi khai thác
mỏ đã viết một bức thư ngỏ gởi đến Hội đồng Giáo hoàng về Công lý và Hòa
bình kêu gọi Giáo Hội đóng một vai trò mạnh mẽ hơn.<br>
<br>
Trong khi ghi nhận sự kiện là máu của nhiều thừa sai, của nhiều Giám Mục,
linh mục, nữ tu đã đổ ra để bảo vệ những người dân nghèo bị cướp đất, những
người ký tên cho rằng: <br>
<br>
"Giáo Hội không thể chỉ đơn giản là một người hòa giải trung lập giữa các
cộng đồng và các công ty. Thông thường các công ty này thường liên minh với
chính quyền quốc gia và địa phương; và ngành khai thác mỏ với những ảnh
hưởng mạnh mẽ của mình có tiếng nói trong mọi không gian của quyền lực hầu
tìm mọi cách bảo vệ những dự án và lợi nhuận của họ."<br>
<br>
Thư ngỏ gởi Hội đồng Giáo hoàng về Công lý và Hòa bình nói thêm:<br>

"Với sự mất cân bằng này về sức mạnh và tầm ảnh hưởng, cộng thêm việc thiếu
một quyền truy cập đầy đủ đến công lý và thông tin, và việc các chính quyền
ra sức quy kết các tội hình sự nghiêm trọng cho các hình thức phản đối xã
hội, thực tế là không thể có được một cuộc đối thoại thẳng thắn với các công
ty và các chính phủ hầu bảo đảm một sự tôn trọng và những chú ý đến các nhu
cầu của những người nghèo nhất".</font></td>
