<font face="Arial">Khi Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô chuẩn bị đến thăm Hoa Kỳ lần
đầu tiên, ngài nhấn mạnh đến sự phục vụ người nghèo hơn là củng cố giáo điều.<br>
<br>
“Tôi cần phải bắt đầu thực hiện các sự cải tổ ngay từ bây giờ”. Đây là lời
ngài nói với sáu người bạn ngài là dân Á Căn Đình hai tháng sau khi 115 Hồng
Y đã bầu ngài làm giáo hoàng trong mật nghị. Đối với nhiều quan sát viên –
một số rất vui thích, một số lại thất vọng – Đức Thánh Cha mới dường như đã
thay đổi mọi sự trong một thời gian ngắn. Ngài là giáo hoàng Châu Mỹ La Tinh
đầu tiên, giáo hoàng Dòng Tên đầu tiên, giáo hoàng đầu tiên không sanh
trưởng tại Âu Châu trên một ngàn năm qua, và là giáo hoàng đầu tiên chọn tên
Phanxicô, để tôn vinh Thánh Phanxicô thành Assissi, vị thánh chuyên lo cho
người nghèo.<br>
<br>
Ngay sau khi được bầu lên ngày 13 tháng 3, 2013, vị lãnh đạo mới của Giáo
Hội Công Giáo xuất hiện trên ban công của Vương Cung Thánh Đường Thánh Phêrô
không mang áo choàng mầu đỏ cũng như giây stola đỏ thêu vàng. Ngài chào đón
đám đông hò reo bằng một lời nói giản dị: “Fratelli e sorelle, buona sera” (Anh
chị em thân mến, thân chào), và ngài kết thúc bằng lời xin mà dân Á Căn Đình
đã quen thuộc: “Xin cầu nguyện cho tôi.” Khi ngài rời khỏi Vương Cung Thánh
Đường, ngài bước qua chiếc xe limousine lộng lẫy để lên xe buýt đi cùng với
các Hồng Y vừa mới chọn ngài làm bề trên của họ.<br>
<br>
Sáng hôm sau, vị tân giáo hoàng tự ý trả tiền phòng khách sạn tại nơi ngài
trú ngụ, bỏ qua tư gia truyền thống của các giáo hoàng tại Cung Điện Tông Đồ
và dọn vào một căn hộ hai phòng tại Nhà Thánh Mác Ta, là nhà khách của
Vatican.<br>
<br>
Trong buổi họp báo đầu tiên với các ký giả quốc tế ngài đã tuyên bố kỳ vọng
chính của ngài: “Tôi muốn có một Giáo Hội khó nghèo và cho người nghèo khó”.
Và thay vì dâng Thánh Lễ Thứ Năm Tuần Thánh để tưởng niệm Bữa Tiệc Ly tại
một vương cung thánh đường và rửa chân cho các linh mục như thông lệ, ngài
đã giảng tại một khám đường giam giữ các thanh thiếu niên, và rửa chân cho
mười hai tù nhân trong đó có cả phụ nữ và người Hồi Giáo, đây là hành động
đầu tiên của một giáo hoàng. Và tất cả những điều này đã xẩy ra trong tháng
đầu tiên của triều đại ngài.<br>
<br>
Đối với thế giới bên ngoài Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô dường như một vì sao xẹt
từ trời rơi xuống, ngài rất nổi tiếng và là một nhân vật tôn giáo đôi khi
hay tranh biện và rất bướng bỉnh, theo các bạn đồng hương với ngài. Là con
của một kế toán viên di cư từ miền Piedmont phía bắc nước Ý. Bergolio đã
xuất sắc ngay khi ngài nhập chủng viện năm 1956, lúc 20 tuổi, sau khi đã làm
một chuyên viên phòng thí nghiệm, và trong môt thời gian ngắn làm “bouncer”
(người gác cửa cho một hộp đêm). Ngay sau đó ngài đã chọn lối đi khó khăn
của Dòng Tên làm con đường trở thành linh mục. Tại Colegio Máximo ở San Jose
năm 1963, ngài tỏ ra có khả năng nhận định về linh đạo và có nhiều năng
khiếu về chính trị, theo linh mục Juan Carlos Scannone, một giáo sư của
ngài. Do<br>
đó ngài mau chóng trở thành vị linh hướng cho các sinh viên khác cũng như cả
các giáo sư. Ngài trở thành viện trưởng Colegio Máximo và là một nhân vật
nổi tiếng tại các khu phố nghèo khó trên khắp thủ đô Buenos Aires. Và ngài
cũng mau chóng thăng thưởng trong Dòng Tên và khéo léo du hành trong chính
trường mờ ám của thời đại Juan Perón và sau đó là thời chính quyền quân sự
độc tài. Ngài mất sự tin cẩn của bề trên Dòng Tên, rồi lại được phục hồi nhờ
một Hồng Y mến chuộng ngài và phong cho ngài làm giám mục năm 1992, tổng
giám mục năm 1998, và Hồng Y năm 2001.<br>
<br>
Ngồi trong phòng khách của tư gia một buổi sáng, ngài đã tâm sự với các bạn
thân là có nhiều thách thức ngài phải đối phó. Tình trạng tài chánh tệ hại
của Ngân Hàng Vatican. Tệ trạng trì trệ của tổ chức hành chánh trung ương
mang tên Roman Curia. Việc tiếp tục tiết lộ các hành vị xâm phạm tính dục
trẻ vị thành niên của các linh mục đang được các giới chức trong Giáo Hội
che đậy. Đối phó với các tệ trạng này, Đức Thánh Cha mong muốn cải tổ ngay,
mặc dù ngài biết sẽ tạo ra thật nhiều kẻ thù.<br>

Bạn ngài nói xin ngài coi chừng, ngài không chịu mang áo giáp chống đạn.
Ngài trả lời: “Chúa đã đặt để tôi vào chỗ này, Người sẽ phải lo lắng cho
tôi.” Mặc dầu ngài không xin làm giáo hoàng, nhưng ngài nói khi tên ngài
được gọi lên trong mật nghị, ngài đã cảm nhận một sự bình an hết sức. Và mặc
dầu có nhiều sự chống đối có thể xẩy ra, ngài cam đoan với các bạn là ngài
vẫn cảm nhận một sự bình an vô cùng. <br>

Dường như sứ mệnh của Đức Thánh Cha là khởi xướng một cuộc cách mạng bên
trong Vatican và bên ngoài. Nhưng theo De la Serna, một bạn hữu người Á Căn
Đình của ngài, ngài nói: “Ngài sẽ không thay đổi giáo thuyết, mà muốn Giáo
Hội trở về với học thuyết chân chính – là giáo điều bị quên lãng, là phải
đặt con người ở chính trọng tâm.”</font></td>
