Tôi cám ơn Thiên Chúa đã cho phép tôi trở lại Mỹ Châu và có mặt tại đây với
quí vị hôm nay trên lãnh thổ tươi đẹp Ecuador này. Tôi cảm thấy hân hoan và
biết ơn khi được thấy sự tiếp đón nồng hậu quí vị dành cho tôi. Đây là dấu
chỉ hiếu khách vốn xác định ra người dân của quốc gia cao quí này.<br>
<br>
Tôi xin cám ơn ngài, thưa Tổng Thống, vì những lời tốt đẹp của ngài, và tôi
xin bày tỏ những lời cầu chúc từ trái tim tôi cho việc ngài thừa hành chức
vụ. Tôi chào kính các nhà cầm quyền cao quí trong chính phủ, các hiền huynh
giám mục, các tín hữu của Giáo Hội tại xứ sở này, và tất cả những ai, ngày
hôm nay, đã mở rộng cõi lòng của họ, mái ấm của họ, quốc gia của họ cho tôi.
Với tất cả quí vị, tôi xin bày tỏ lòng âu yếm và thành thực đánh giá cao của
tôi.<br>
<br>
Tôi đã từng viếng thăm Ecuador nhiều dịp vì các lý do mục vụ. Ngày hôm nay,
tôi cũng đã tới như một chứng nhân của lòng từ bi Thiên Chúa và của đức tin
vào Chúa Giêsu Kitô. Cả nhiều thế kỷ qua, đức tin này đã lên khuôn cho căn
tính của dân tộc này và nó đã mang lại nhiều hoa trái tốt đẹp, trong đó có
những nhân vật xuất chúng như Thánh Mariana de Jesus, Thánh Miguel Febres,
Thánh Narcisa de Jesús và Chân Phúc Mercedes de Jesús Molina, được phong tại
Guayaquil ba mươi năm trước đây nhân chuyến viếng thăm của Đức Thánh Giáo
Hoàng Gioan Phaolô II. Những nhân vật này, và nhiều người khác giống như các
ngài, đã sống đức tin của họ một cách cao độ và nhiệt thành, và qua công
trình thương xót, họ đã đóng góp nhiều cách vào việc cải thiện xã hội
Ecuador thời họ.<br>

Trong thời ta cũng thế, chúng ta có thể tìm thấy trong Tin Mừng chìa khóa để
giải quyết các thách đố hiện thời, qua việc tôn trọng các dị biệt, cổ vũ đối
thoại và tham gia trọn vẹn, để việc tăng trưởng trong tiến bộ và phát triển
vốn đã có sẽ bảo đảm một tương lai tốt đẹp hơn cho mọi người, với sự quan
tâm đặc biệt đối với những người yếu thế nhất trong anh chị em chúng ta.
Trong các cố gắng này, thưa Tổng Thống, ngài luôn có thể tin tưởng vào sự
cam kết và hợp tác của Giáo Hội.<br>

Các bạn thân mến, tôi bắt đầu cuộc viếng thăm của tôi với lòng hào hứng và
hy vọng cho những ngày ở đàng trước. Ecuador là địa điểm gần nhất đối với
ngoại không gian; đây là đỉnh Chimborazo, mà chính vì thế được gọi là nơi
“gần mặt trời”, mặt trăng và các vì sao nhất. Kitô hữu chúng ta vốn đồng hóa
Chúa Kitô với mặt trời, còn Giáo Hội và cộng đồng tín hữu với mặt trăng.
Không một ai, trừ Chúa Giêsu Kitô, có được ánh sáng riêng. Ước mong những
ngày sắp tới sẽ làm tất cả chúng ta ý thức rõ rệt hơn mặt trời, thực thể
“đang ló dạng trên ta từ trên cao” gần gũi với ta như thế nào. Ước mong mỗi
người chúng ta là một phản chiếu đích thực ánh sáng và tình yêu của Người.<br>
<br>
Từ nơi này, tôi muốn ôm hôn toàn bộ Ecuador. Từ đỉnh Chimborazo qua bờ Thái
Bình Dương; từ rừng nhiệt đới Amazon tới các Hải Đảo Galapagos, ước mong các
bạn đừng bao giờ đánh mất khả năng bảo vệ những gì là nhỏ bé và đơn sơ, chăm
sóc cho con cái các bạn và cho người cao niên của các bạn, tin tưởng vào
người trẻ, và không ngừng ngưỡng phục vẻ cao quí của dân tộc các bạn và vẻ
đẹp có một không hai của xứ sở các bạn.<br>

Xin Trái Tim Cực Thánh Chúa Giêsu và Trái Tim Vô Nhiễm Đức Mẹ Maria, mà
