Quito, khởi sự chuyến viếng thăm dài 8 ngày tại 3 nước Ecuador, Bolivia và

<font face="Arial"> Việc ngài chọn 3 nước này để thực hiện chuyến viếng thăm
đầu tiên tại Mỹ châu la tinh theo đúng nghĩa không phải là tình cờ: 3 nước
này thuộc hàng nhỏ nhất, nghèo nhất, ít được để ý tới trong chính trị đại
lục và quốc tế. Cả trong trường hợp này, ĐTC muốn khởi hành từ ”ngoại ô”,
nhưng cũng là nơi người ta cảm nghiệm một năng động mạnh mẽ về chính trị và
xã hội. Đây cũng là những nơi đang có những thách đố lớn về mặt xã hội:
nghèo đói, thất nghiệp, ô nhiễm môi trường, mong ước hòa bình, đấu tranh cho
công bằng xã hội. </font></p>

<font face="Arial"> Trên chuyến bay dài 13 tiếng đồng hồ, ĐTC đã chào thăm
75 ký giả Italia và quốc tế tháp tùng và cầu chúc họ làm việc tốt đẹp trong
8 ngày viếng thăm. Trong lời giới thiệu giới báo chí lên ĐTC, cha Lombardi,
Giám đốc phòng báo chí Tòa Thánh, cũng nhắc đến hơn 1 ngàn ký giả quốc tế
khác đăng ký tại các phòng báo chí 3 nước để theo dõi và tường thuật về các
hoạt động của ĐGH. Cha Lombardi cho biết có 100 ký giả làm đơn xin tháp tùng
ĐTC trong chuyến máy bay, nhưng chỉ có 75 chỗ thôi. Rồi ĐTC chào từng ký giả
và cám ơn họ. </font></p>

Thiên Chúa và về niềm tin nơi Chúa Giêsu Kitô. Cũng niềm tin ấy qua bao thế
kỷ đã hình thành căn tính của dân tộc này và đã mang lại bao nhiêu hoa trái
tốt đẹp, trong đó có những nhân vật sáng ngời như thánh nữ Marianna Chúa
Giêsu, thánh tu huynh Micae Febres, thánh nữ Narcisa Chúa Giêsu hoặc chân
phước Mercedes di Gesù Molina được phong chân phước tại Guayquil này cách
đây 30 năm trong cuộc viếng thăm của thánh Giáo Hoàng Gioan Phaolô 2. Các vị
đã sống đức tin nồng nhiệt và hăng say, và thực thi lòng thương xót bằng
cách góp phần trong nhiều lãnh vực vào việc cải tiến xã hội Ecuador thời các
ngài. </font></p>

<font face="Arial"> ”Tất cả các bạn thân mến, trong niềm mong đợi và hy vọng,
tôi bắt đầu những ngày này. Tại Ecuador, điểm gần nhất với không gian bên
ngoài là Chimborazo, được gọi như thế vì đó là nơi ”gần mặt trời nhất”, gần
mặt trăng và các tinh tú. Các Kitô hữu chúng ta ví Chúa Giêsu với mặt trời,

núi Chimborazo cho đến bờ biển Thái Bình Dương; từ vùng rừng Amazonia cho
đến các đảo Galapagos; anh chị em đừng bao giờ đánh mất khả năng cảm tạ Chúa
vì những gì Ngài đã và đang làm cho anh chị em; khả năng bảo vệ người bé nhỏ

riêng với Tổng thống Correa, ĐTC đã về tòa Sứ thần Tòa Thánh cách đó 40 cây
số. Chiếc xe ngài đi là xe Fiat Idea, bé nhỏ nhất trong số các xe trong đoàn,
kể cả các xe hộ tống, giống như chiếc xe ngài đã đi khi tới Rio de Janeiro
cách đây 2 năm. Rồi chuyển sang chiếc xe dip màu trắng có mái che bằng

đón tiếp hàng trăm ngàn tín hữu. </font></p>

này và khi còn làm Giám tỉnh dòng Tên ở Argentina, ngài thường gửi một số tu
sĩ trẻ đến học kinh nghiệm tại Học viện dòng Tên tại đây. </font></p>
