Thiên Chúa theo đó ‘Ngươi chớ giết người!’ phải thắng thế. Không một người
lính nào có nghĩa vụ phải tuân theo một lệnh lạc chống lại luật pháp của
Thiên Chúa... nhân danh dân tộc đau khổ này, dân tộc mà tiếng kêu than của
họ bay tới trời cao càng ngày càng thống thiết hơn, tôi van xin anh em, tôi
khẩn cầu anh em, và tôi ra lệnh cho anh em nhân danh Thiên Chúa, ngưng ngay
tức khắc sự đàn áp này”.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Những lời này, được phát trực tiếp trên đài phát thanh
riêng của ngài trên toàn thể lãnh thổ có lẽ là những lời nổi tiếng nhất của
Đức Tổng Giám mục Oscar Romero. Những lời ấy đã được thốt ra từ bục giảng
của nhà thờ chính tòa Thánh Tâm ở thủ đô San Salvador vào ngày Chúa Nhật 23
tháng 3 năm 1980. Đó là một lời cầu xin chân thành gửi đến các thành viên
của lực lượng an ninh chính phủ và biệt đội tử thần là những kẻ đã bắn giết
và tàn sát những người nghèo và những người bị tước đoạt ruộng đất ở El
Salvador - những người nam nữ chỉ có một tội duy nhất là dám đòi hỏi một sự
chia sẻ công bằng hơn về đất đai và tài nguyên của đất nước.</font></p>

Giám Mục Romero. Thật vậy, chưa đầy 24 giờ sau khi thốt ra những lời này
ngài đã phải chết.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Đức Cha Romero thừa biết lập trường kiên quyết bảo vệ
người nghèo sẽ chỉ có một kết quả là cái chết. Trong một chuyến thăm Rôma
vào cuối tháng Giêng năm 1980, ngài đã nói với cha Lucas Moreira Neves, tổng
thư ký của Bộ Giám Mục, rằng chẳng bao lâu nữa ngài sẽ bị ám sát. Tòa Thánh
đề nghị một chức vụ trong giáo triều Rôma để ngài tạm xa những căng thẳng
gần như không thể chịu nổi đang ngày một gia tăng trong một đất nước Trung
Mỹ nhỏ bé. Ngài đã từ chối.</font></p>

đi trưa tại La Libertad trên bờ biển với một nhóm nhỏ các sinh viên Opus
Dei, và đi thẳng vào một tu viện Dòng Tên tại Santa Tecla, để tìm cha
Segundo Azcue, là cha giải tội của ngài để xưng tội.</font></p>

ở Bệnh viện Divine Providence ở San Salvador, để chuẩn bị cử hành thánh lễ
cầu nguyện cho Doña Sarita, là mẹ của anh Jorge Pinto, một người bạn và là
chủ biên của nhật báo El Independiente. Tòa soạn của anh Jorge Pinto vừa bị
đặt bom nổ tung chỉ một vài tuần trước đó.</font></p>

Salvador phải chịu, ngài chia sẻ với cộng đoàn: “Điều quan trọng là đừng yêu
mình đến nỗi không dám dính líu vào những việc liều lĩnh mà lịch sử đòi hỏi
nơi chúng ta... Bất cứ ai vì lòng yêu mến Chúa Kitô hiến thân phục vụ tha
nhân, người ấy sẽ được sống giống như hạt lúa mì dù chết đi, nhưng thật ra
chỉ chết về mặt bề ngoài”.</font></p>

“Tôi tin trong sự chết có sự sống lại. Nếu người ta giết tôi, tôi sẽ được
sống lại trong lòng người dân Salvador của tôi”. Kết thúc bài chia sẻ, ngài
tới giữa bàn thờ chuẩn bị dâng bánh rượu, đồng hồ chỉ 6 giờ 24 phút. Lúc đó,
ngài nhận thấy một chiếc Volkswagen màu đỏ áp sát cửa nhà nguyện. Khi Đức
Cha chồm tới chiếc đĩa thánh trên bàn thờ thì một phát súng duy nhất vang
lên. Ngài quỵ xuống sàn phía sau bàn thờ ngay dưới chân một cây thánh giá
lớn, bất tỉnh, máu chảy ra từ miệng, mũi và tai ngài.</font></p>

chiếc xe tải gần đó và đưa vội vã đến bệnh viện Policlínica. Lễ phục của
ngài đẫm máu. Trong vòng vài phút sau khi đến đó, ngài thở hơi cuối cùng.
Dường như điều này chính xác là những điều Đức Tổng Giám mục Romero đã tiên

thánh nhân, một mục tử thánh thiện đã đưa ra một chứng tá sống động cho
những lời của Chúa Giêsu “Này là Mình Ta sẽ bị nộp vì anh em”.</font></td>
