Kirill của Chính thống Nga lên tiếng ca ngợi lập trường "cân bằng" của
Vatican về cuộc xung đột ở Ukraine, trong khi lên án thái độ “bài Nga” của
Giáo Hội Công Giáo Ukraine, trong một diễn từ trước các giám mục Chính thống
giáo họp tại Mạc Tư Khoa.</font></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-bottom: 8pt"><font face="Arial">Phát ngôn
viên của Chính thống giáo Nga đã liên tục đổ lỗi cho Giáo Hội Công Giáo
Ukraine nghi lễ Byzantine là khuấy lên sự oán giận đối với Nga, và Đức
Thượng Phụ Kirill củng cố lập luận này. Ông cáo buộc rằng người Công Giáo
Ukaine đã tạo ra cuộc khủng hoảng ở Ukraine hiện nay khi "thúc đẩy lật đổ
chính quyền Viktor Yanukovych bằng những khẩu hiệu dân tộc và bài Nga."</font></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-bottom: 8pt"><font face="Arial">Tuy nhiên,
Thượng Phụ Chính Thống Giáo Nga đã phân biệt Giáo Hội Công Giáo Ukraine và
Tòa Thánh, nói rằng Vatican đã "luôn luôn theo đuổi một lập trường cân bằng,"
kêu gọi đàm phán hòa bình và cảnh báo chống lại bạo lực.</font></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-bottom: 8pt"><font face="Arial">Cuối năm
1991, Liên Sô sụp đổ và Ukraine trở thành một quốc gia độc lập như ngày nay.
Tuy vậy, người Nga (chiếm ¼ dân số) vẫn tiếp tục nắm giữ những chức vụ quan
trọng trong guồng máy công quyền và trong các hoạt động xã hội. Cuộc 'cách
mạng' đã bắt đầu khi Tổng thống Viktor Yanukovych bất ngờ chấm dứt giai đoạn
cuối cùng cuả cuộc đàm phán với Liên Hiệp Châu Âu và muốn đưa đất nước
Ukraine trở lại quỹ đạo của Mạc Tư Khoa.</font></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-bottom: 8pt"><font face="Arial">Người dân
Ukraine muốn đoạn tuyệt với Nga và hội nhập vào Liên Hiệp Châu Âu, đã tổ
chức những cuộc biểu tình khổng lồ tại quảng trường Maidan Nezalezhnosti.
Giáo Hội Công Giáo đã đồng hành với dân chúng Ukraine trong những cuộc biểu
tình long trời lở đất. Sau khi đàn áp dã man dân chúng không thành công,
Viktor Yanukovych bỏ trốn sang Nga. Quân Nga lập tức xâm lược Crimea và kích
động người Nga tại miền Đông Ukraine nổi loạn.</font></td>
