<font face="Arial">Cha mẹ Chân Phước Joseph Vaz là những người rất mộ đạo
sinh sống tại Benaulim thuộc giáo phận Goa, Ấn Độ. Ngài sinh ngày 21 tháng
Tư năm 1651, được thụ phong linh mục tại Tổng Giáo phận Goa vào năm 1676.
Ngài đã gia nhập một cộng đoàn nhỏ các linh mục Ấn Độ năm 1684 và đã giúp
hình thành Dòng Anh Em Thuyết Giảng Thánh Philip Neri. Cha Vaz rất nhạy cảm
với hoàn cảnh của những người Công Giáo ở Tích Lan dưới sự bách hại của
người Hà Lan. Ngài đã trá hình thành một người lao động bình thường để sang
vùng đất này vào năm 1687 và đặt trụ sở tại Kandy. Ngài đã hoạt động miệt
mài trong 24 năm để xây dựng lại Giáo Hội tại Sri Lanka.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Đây là lời tiên tri tuyệt vời mà chúng ta đã nghe trong
bài đọc thứ nhất hôm nay. Tiên tri Isaiah báo trước việc rao giảng Tin Mừng
của Chúa Giêsu Kitô tới khắp cùng bờ cõi trái đất. Lời tiên tri này có một ý
nghĩa đặc biệt đối với chúng ta, khi chúng ta mừng lễ phong thánh cho một
nhà truyền giáo vĩ đại của Tin Mừng, là Thánh Joseph Vaz. Giống như vô số
các nhà truyền giáo khác trong lịch sử của Giáo Hội, ngài đáp lại lệnh
truyền của Chúa Phục Sinh làm cho muôn dân trở thành môn đệ (xem Mt 28:19).
Bằng những lời rao giảng của ngài, nhưng quan trọng hơn, bằng những gương
sáng trong cuộc sống của mình, ngài đã dẫn dắt người dân của đất nước này
đến với đức tin là điều khiến chúng ta được thừa kế “phần gia nghiệp cùng
với tất cả những người đã được thánh hiến" (Cv 20:32).</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Là một linh mục của Dòng Anh Em Thuyết Giảng ở Goa nơi
quê hương mình, Thánh Joseph Vaz đã đến đất nước này vì lòng nhiệt thành
truyền giáo và vì một tình yêu vĩ đại dành cho dân tộc này. Trước những bách
hại tôn giáo, ngài phải ăn mặc như một người ăn xin, trong khi thực hiện
nhiệm vụ tư tế của mình trong các cuộc tụ tập bí mật với các tín hữu, thường
là vào ban đêm. Những nỗ lực của ngài đã đem lại sức mạnh tinh thần và đạo
đức cho người dân Công Giáo đang trong cơn hoạn nạn. Ngài có một mong muốn

<font face="Arial">Thánh Joseph Vaz tiếp tục là một mẫu gương và một thầy

<font face="Arial">Thứ hai, Thánh Joseph chỉ cho chúng ta thấy tầm quan
trọng của việc phải thắng vượt những chia rẽ tôn giáo vì sứ vụ hòa bình.
Tình yêu không chia cách của ngài dành cho Thiên Chúa mở lòng ngài ra để yêu
người lân cận của mình; ngài chăm sóc cho ai đang cần đến, bất cứ ai và ở
bất cứ nơi nào. Gương sáng của thánh nhân tiếp tục truyền cảm hứng cho Giáo
Hội tại Sri Lanka ngày nay. Giáo Hội phục vụ một cách cũng vui vẻ và hào
phóng tất cả các thành viên của xã hội. Giáo Hội không phân biệt chủng tộc,
tín ngưỡng, bộ tộc, hay tình trạng tôn giáo trong những sứ vụ Giáo Hội cống
hiến thông qua trường học, bệnh viện, phòng khám, và nhiều công trình từ
thiện khác của mình. Tất cả những gì Giáo Hội muốn được hồi đáp là tự do để
thực hiện sứ mệnh này. Tự do tôn giáo là một nhân quyền cơ bản. Mỗi cá nhân
phải được tự do, một mình hoặc kết hợp với những người khác, để tìm kiếm sự
thật, và công khai bày tỏ xác tín tôn giáo của mình, mà không bị đe dọa hay
ép buộc từ bên ngoài. Như cuộc sống của Thánh Joseph Vaz đã dạy chúng ta, sự
thờ phượng Thiên Chúa đích thực sinh hoa kết quả không phải nơi sự phân biệt
đối xử, hận thù và bạo lực, nhưng nơi niềm tôn trọng sự thánh thiêng của sự
sống, phẩm giá và tự do của người khác, và nơi những dấn thân yêu thương cho
phúc lợi của tất cả mọi người.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Cuối cùng, Thánh Joseph mang lại cho chúng ta một gương
sáng về lòng nhiệt thành truyền giáo. Mặc dù, ngài đã đến Tích Lan để làm
mục vụ cho cộng đồng Công Giáo, lòng bác ái truyền giáo của ngài đã thúc
giục ngài đến với tất cả mọi người. Bỏ lại đằng sau nhà cửa, gia đình, sự
thoải mái của một môi trường quen thuộc, ngài đáp lại ơn gọi để ra đi, để
nói về Chúa Kitô bất cứ nơi nào bước chân đưa ngài đến. Thánh Joseph biết
làm thế nào để đem lại sự thật và vẻ đẹp của Tin Mừng trong một bối cảnh đa
tôn giáo, với một niềm tôn trọng, tận hiến, kiên trì và khiêm tốn. Đây cũng
là con đường của các môn đệ Chúa Giêsu ngày nay. Chúng ta được mời gọi để ra
đi cũng với một lòng nhiệt thành như thế, cùng một sự can đảm như của Thánh
Joseph, nhưng cũng với một sự nhạy cảm của thánh nhân, sự tôn kính dành cho
người khác, và lòng ao ước chia sẻ với họ lời ân sủng (Cv 20:32) có sức mạnh
