Mục Phêrô Nguyễn Văn Tốt là sứ thần Tòa Thánh tại đảo quốc này và Đức Hồng Y
Malcolm Ranjith của tổng giáo phận thủ đô Colombo và đông đảo các Giám Mục
của 11 giáo phận và 1 tổng giáo phận tại Sri Lanka.</font></p>

thống Mahinda Rajapaksa đã từ chối hợp tác với Liên Hợp Quốc để thực hiện
một cuộc điều tra tội ác chiến tranh trong giai đoạn cuối cùng của cuộc
chiến kéo dài gần 26 năm từ 22/07/1983 đến 18/05/2009. Một báo cáo của Liên
Hợp Quốc đưa ra năm 2011 cho biết có tới 40,000 thường dân Tamil vô tội đã

<font face="Arial">Chuyến thăm của tôi đến Sri Lanka chủ yếu là về mục vụ.
Trong tư cách mục tử toàn thể Giáo Hội Công Giáo, tôi đã gặp gỡ, khích lệ và
cầu nguyện với anh chị em giáo dân của hòn đảo này. Nét nổi bật của chuyến
thăm này sẽ là việc phong thánh cho Chân Phước Joseph Vaz, một mẫu gương của
lòng bác ái Kitô giáo và sự tôn trọng mọi người, không phân biệt dân tộc,
tôn giáo, là vị đang điều tiếp tục truyền cảm hứng và dạy dỗ chúng ta hôm
nay. Nhưng chuyến đi của tôi cũng còn có một ý nghĩa là để thể hiện tình yêu

<font face="Arial">Một bi kịch vẫn đang tiếp diễn trong thế giới của chúng
ta đó là rất nhiều cộng đồng đang có chiến tranh với nhau. Việc không có khả
năng hoà giải những khác biệt và bất đồng, dù cũ hay mới, đã làm gia tăng
các căng thẳng sắc tộc và tôn giáo, thường xuyên đi kèm với những đợt bùng
phát bạo lực. Sri Lanka trong nhiều năm đã kinh qua nỗi kinh hoàng của cuộc
nội chiến, và bây giờ đang tìm cách củng cố hòa bình và chữa lành những vết
sẹo của những tháng năm đó. Vượt qua những di sản cay đắng của bất công, thù
địch và nghi ngờ mà cuộc xung đột để lại là một nhiệm vụ không dễ dàng gì.
Nó chỉ có thể được thực hiện bằng cách vượt qua sự ác với điều thiện (Rm
12:21) và bằng cách đề cao những đức tính nào nuôi dưỡng hòa giải, đoàn kết
