Cuộc nội chiến tại Sri Lanka mới chấm dứt cách nay vài năm kể từ tháng 5,
năm 2009. Có khoảng 1000.000 người bị chết trong cuộc chiến này, đa số trong
những tháng cuối cùng của cuộc chiến. Năm 2010, một ủy ban hòa giải được
thành lập để đối phó với những hành động tàn ác do quân đội của chính phủ
tác hại tại miển bắc và đông của quốc gia trên hòn đảo này. Nhưng theo một
giám mục Sri Lanka thì ủy ban này chưa làm được gì đáng kể.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Người ta nghi ngờ rằng chính phủ của tổng thống Mahinda
Rajapaksa không muốn đả động đến quá khứ đau buồn đó. Sau khi quân đội chiến
thắng quân phản lọan Tamil, một ý thức hệ Phật Giáo–Sinha lan tràn trên khắp
Sri Lanka. Theo lời Đức Giám Mục Joseph Rayappu ở Manar miền Tây Bắc Sri
Lanka: “Bỏ quá khứ lại đằng sau và muốn quên đi những gì đã qua, phù hợp với
một não trạng của Phật giáo. Điều này dĩ nhiễn làm cho việc hòa giải quốc

<font face="Arial">Đức Giám Mục Rayappu nói hòa giải là điều kiện cần thiết
để đem lại hòa bình lâu bền giữa người Sinha và Tamil. Đã có những căng
thẳng mới xẩy ra. Đức Giám Mục đã hy vọng cuộc viếng thăm của Đức Thánh Cha
Phanxicô sẽ giúp cho tình hình êm dịu hơn. Ngài dự trù sẽ thăm Sri Lanka từ
ngày 12 đến 15 tháng 1. Tuy nhiên, Tổng Thống Rajapaksa đã quyết định tổ
chức cuộc bầu cử tổng thống vào ngày 8 tháng 1, và điều này khiến cho các
nhà lãnh đạo Giáo Hội bực tức. Họ đã tranh đấu để chính phủ không tổ chức
bầu cử qúa gần ngày Đức Thánh Cha viếng thăm, nhưng không có kết quả.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Đức Giám Mục Rayappu dẫn chứng lá thư mục vụ của Hội đồng
giám mục Sri Lanka tháng 12, 2013 mang tiêu đề: “Tiến tới sự hòa giải và tái
thiết quốc gia chúng ta” như một đường lối cho quốc gia. Trong thư này 15
giám mục yêu cầu ủy ban hòa giải kêu gọi “sự kết hợp dần dần các cộng đồng
khác nhau trong nước, và nhất là tại miền Đông Bắc phải được thi hành đứng
đắn.” Ngòai việc kêu gọi phải thiết lập một hệ thống ba ngôn ngữ Sinhala,
Tamil, và Anh ngữ trong các trường học cũng như đại học, các giám mục đề
nghị phải có sự hợp tác giữa các nhóm thiểu số và tôn giáo trong nước, và
khuyến khích phải có can đảm để đối phó với những mặt trái tối tăm của cuộc
nội chiến.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Khoảng 70% dân số 21 triệu người Sri Lanka là Phật tử;
12% theo Ấn giáo; khoảng 10% là Hồi giáo; 8% Thiên Chúa giáo, với đa số là
Công Giáo. Về sắc dân, quốc gia này không đa dạng lắm: 75% người Sinha,
khoảng 15% Tamil; và khoảng 10% được gọi là người Moor, với đa số là Hồi
giáo.</font></p>
