người tại thủ đô Colombo vào ban sáng, lúc 2 giờ chiều cùng ngày 14-1, ĐTC
đã đáp trực thăng của không lực Sri Lanka từ thủ đô Colombo để bay đến Đền
thánh Đức Mẹ Madhu, cách đó 250 cây số về hướng bắc và là miền có đại đa số
dân thuộc sắc tộc Tamil.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Đền thánh Madhu thuộc giáo phận Mannar, hiện có 90 ngàn
tín hữu Công Giáo trên tổng số 270 ngàn dân cư, với 34 giáo xứ do 55 LM giáo
phận coi sóc và 330 LM dòng và 183 nữ tu.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Lịch sử Đền Thánh</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Đền thánh Đức Mẹ Madhu đã có từ hơn 4 thế kỷ, tức là từ
năm 1544 khi vua Sankili ở thành Jaffna tàn sát 600 tín hữu Công Giáo ở
Mannar, vốn do các thừa sai Bồ đào nha hoán cải, vì nhà vua sợ người Bồ bành
trướng ảnh hưởng. Có một số tín hữu tránh thoát được cuộc thảm sát và trong
rằng họ thiết lập một nhà nguyện nhỏ bé và đặt trong đó tượng Đức Mẹ hiện
nay ở trong Đền Thánh. 4 thập niên sau đó, một số tín hữu Công Giáo lại phải
chạy khỏi Mannar và bắt đầu kiến thiết các thánh đường ở các vùng lân cận.
Một trong các nhà thờ đó được thiết lập tại Mantai và là nơi đầu tiên được
đặt tượng Đức Mẹ Madhu.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Năm 1656 người Hòa Lan theo Tin Lành Calvin đổ bộ lên đảo
Tích Lan và bách hại các tín hữu Công Giáo. Có 30 gia đình Công Giáo chạy
trốn từ làng này sang làng khác, họ mang theo pho tượng Đức Mẹ và 14 năm sau
đó, họ định cư tại nơi ngày nay là Đền thánh Đức Mẹ Madhu. Một số tín hữu
Công Giáo khác, trốn tránh cuộc bách hại của người Hòa Lan cũng chạy đến nơi
này, trong số họ có một phụ nữ Bồ đào nha tên là Helena, và bà đã khởi công
xây cất thánh đường nhỏ đầu tiên dâng kính Đức Mẹ Madhu.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Đức Mẹ tại đây được biết đến trên toàn đảo Tích Lan và
được tôn kính như vị bảo vệ và chữa lành những người bị rắn cắn.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Khi cha Joseph Vaz từ Ấn độ đến hoạt động tại Tích Lan từ
năm 1687, Công Giáo được phát triển và năm 1706, Đền thánh Đức Mẹ Madhu trở
thành một trung tâm truyền giáo. Thánh đường hiện nay ở Madhu được khởi công

<font face="Arial">Đền thành Đức Mẹ Mân Côi ở Madhu vẫn luôn là nơi hành
hương và cầu nguyện của cac tín hữu Công Giáo và cả tín đồ các tôi giáo
khác. Và mặc dù vùng này trong quá khứ đã xảy ra những cuộc giao tranh giữa
phiến quân Tamil và quân đội chính phủ Sri Lanka, các GM nước này đã thành
công trong việc yêu cầu cả hai phe lâm chiến chấp nhận Madhu là vùng phi
quân sự, đảm bảo an ninh cho các tín hữu hành hương và nhiều người tị nạn
chạy tới miền này để tránh các cuộc giao tranh. Thực vậy, từ năm 1990, khu
vực 160 hécta quanh Đền thánh Đức Mẹ Madhu đã tiếp đón hàng ngàn người tị
nạn chiến tranh. Sau chiến tranh, tháng 4 năm 2008, Đền Thánh Đức Mẹ được
giao lại cho giáo phận Mannar va việc thờ phượng được mở lại từ tháng 12 năm
2010.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Đến Madhu lúc 3 giờ rưỡi chiều, sau 1 giờ 15 phút bay,
ĐTC đã đi xe tiến qua các lối đi để chào thăm hàng trăm ngàn người tụ tập
dọc theo hai bên đường và nhất tại khu vực trước Đền thánh. Tại cổng chào
ngài được Đức GM địa phương, Joseph Rayyappu và chính quyền đón tiếp.</font></p>

Anh, Singalais và Tamil. Vì nhà thờ nhỏ, nên lớn các tín hữu tham dự buổi
cầu nguyện từ các khu vườn bên ngoài. Có một khu vực riêng dành cho các vị
sư phật giáo đến tham dự buổi cầu nguyện.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Trong lời chào ĐTC, Đức GM sở tại đã gợi lại lịch sử đền
thánh Đức Mẹ Madhi và cho biết Đền thánh này vẫn giữ vai trò quan trọng
trong việc khơi dậy và nuôi dưỡng ơn gọi linh mục và tu sĩ. Và mỗi năm vào
dịp lễ Đức Mẹ Hồn Xác lên trời, hơn 600 ngàn tín hữu từ các nơi vẫn đề đây
hành hương kính Đức Mẹ. Cũng vậy có đông đảo tín hữu đến kính viếng vào
những dịp lễ khác và cuối tuần.</font></p>

Mathêu về các mối phúc thật: Phúc cho những người sầu khổ vì họ sẽ được an

kiện, tại Đền thánh này, mọi người Sri Lanka, dù là thuộc sắc tộc Tamil hay

trong nhà của Mẹ. Nơi đây cũng có sự hiện diện của các gia đình từ nam chí

đã cầu nguyện trước tượng Đức Mẹ nh[o bé này và ngày nay vẫn con tiếp tục.
Mẹ là mẹ của đông đảo các gia đình đang tìm kiếm một cuộc sống an bình. Mẹ
Maria bảo vệ nhân dân Sri Lanka khỏi những nguy hiểm quá khứ và hiện tại. Mẹ
luôn gần gũi Chúa Con chịu đóng đanh và gần các con cái Sri Lanka của mình.</font></p>

khủng và đẫm máu trong những năm ấy. Không người Sri Lanka nào có thể quên
những biến cố bi thảm gắn liền với chính nơi này, hoặc ngày đau buồn khi
tượng Đức Mẹ đáng kính, có từ thời các tín hữu Kitô đầu tiên đến Sri Lanka,

luôn mang Chúa Giêsu cho chúng ta và luôn ban cho chúng ta sức mạnh để tái
lập an bình trong tâm hồn chúng ta. Sau bao nhiêu oán thù, bao nhiêu bạo lực
và tàn phá, chúng ta hãy cảm tạ Mẹ, vì Mẹ tiếp tục mang Chúa Giêsu cho chúng
ta, chỉ có Chúa mới có thể chữa lành những vết thương còn rộng mở và tái lập
an bình cho những con tim bị tan vỡ.</font></p>

giá, chúng ta hiểu được sự ác mà chúng ta có khả năng thực hiện, và thậm chí
còn tham gia vào đó nữa, thì chúng ta mới có thể cảm thấy hối hận và thống
hối thực sự. Chỉ khi ấy chúng ta mới có thể lãnh nhận ơn đến gần nhau với
tâm tình thống hối chân thành, trao ban và đón nhận tha thứ. Chúng ta hãy
cầu xin ơn từ bi của Chúa, ơn đền bù các tội lỗi và bao nhiêu sự ác mà đất
nước này đã từng trải qua.</font></p>

tùng tất cả mọi người, Tamil cũng như Singalais, trong công cuộc tái tạo
hiệp nhất mà mọi người mong muốn. Ngài nhắc nhớ rằng trong tư cách là anh
chị em với nhau, chúng ta luôn có thể đi về nhà Thiên Chúa trong một tinh
thần đổi mới hòa giải và huynh đệ.</font></p>

của ĐTC. Ngài cầm tượng Đức Mẹ Madhu và vẽ hình Thánh Giá trên các tín hữu.
Ban quản đốc Đền thánh cũng tặng ĐTC pho tượng nhỏ bản sao tượng Đức Mẹ
Madhu. Ngài cũng dâng tặng tượng Đức Mẹ xâu chuỗi quí giá và cúi đầu cung
kính cầu nguyện. Rồi ngài trở lại sân bay trực thăng gần đó để về thủ đô
Colombo vào lúc 6 giờ chiều cùng ngày.</font></td>
