Biển Đức 16 đã tiếp kiến tân đại sứ nước Costa Rica cạnh Tòa thánh, Ông
Fernado Sanchez Campos, đến trình quốc thư. Ngài khích lệ nước này tiếp
tục bài trừ các tệ đoan xã hội, nhất là nạn buôn bán ma túy và người trẻ
phạm pháp.<br>
<br>
Tân đại sứ Sanchez Campos năm nay 36 tuổi (1974), nguyên là một đại biểu
quốc hội và là chủ tịch Ủy ban lập pháp của Costa Rica.<br>
<br>
Trong diễn văn chào mừng ông tân đại sứ, ĐTC ca ngợi Costa Rica vốn được
coi như một điểm tham chiếu hòa bình trước mặt cộng đồng quốc tế và ngài
nói: ”Vì thế, điều quan trọng là những vị nắm giữ vận mạng quốc gia cần
kiên trì trong quyết tâm bài trừ tệ nạn phạm pháp mà không bị trừng
phạt, nạn pháp pháp của người trẻ, nạn trẻ em lao động, bất công, nạn
buôn bán ma túy, đồng thời tăng cường các biện pháp an ninh ở thành thị,
cung cấp một nền giáo dục thích hợp cho trẻ em và người trẻ, quan tâm
thích đáng tới các tù nhân và thực hiện kế hoạch săn sóc sức khỏe hữu
hiệu cho mọi người dân, đặc biệt những người nghèo và người già”.<br>

Theo ĐTC, ”Điều quan trọng là các thế hệ trẻ xác tín rằng các cuộc xung
đột không thể chỉ giải quyết bằng võ lực, nhưng bằng cách hoán cải tâm
hồn về sự thiệt và sự thật, chấm dứt tình trạng lầm than và nạn mù chữ,
tăng cường chế độ pháp trị và củng cố sự độc lập cũng như hiệu năng của
các tòa án”.<br>
<br>
Costa Rica hiện có 4,3 triệu dân trong đó một nửa sống tại thủ đô San
José. Quốc gia này vốn nổi tiếng về nền dân chủ bền vững, có truyền
thống trung lập và thường làm trung gian giải quyết các cuộc xung đột ở
Mỹ châu la tinh. Costa Rica có quan hệ ngoại giao với Tòa Thánh từ năm
1850 và vị Sứ Thần Tòa Thánh hiện nay là Đức TGM Phêrô Nguyễn Văn Tốt
