Vì người pharisêu chỉ nhìn thấy điều tốt lành nơi mình nên ông sớm để ý
người <span class="GramE">thu</span> thuế và đánh giá anh theo thành kiến
của mình. Ngược lại người <span class="GramE">thu</span> thuế dường như
không để ý đến ông pharisêu, cũng chẳng nghe thấy lời cầu nguyện của ông.
Anh ta chỉ nhìn thấy Thiên Chúa và chính bản thân mình dưới ánh sáng của
Thiên Chúa: anh là kẻ tội lỗi. Mặc dù vậy, anh không hề bị nghiền nát bởi
tội lỗi, vì anh chỉ nhắc đến tội của mình để khám khá ra lòng thương xót của
Chúa: "Lạy Chúa, xin thương xót con là kẻ tội lỗi!" Người
<span class="GramE">thu</span> thuế không dám nghĩ đến những điều cao xa hơn
nữa. Trái lại, dưới ánh sáng của Thiên Chúa, anh chấp nhận sự thấp hèn của
mình. <span class="GramE">Sự thấp hèn ấy là sự thật sâu thẳm của anh, nó cho
phép anh xuất hiện trần trụi trước Thiên Chúa.</span> <span class="GramE">Có
lẽ anh còn muốn khơi dậy và đào sâu sự thật ấy hơn nữa dưới ánh mắt uy quyền
đầy lòng thương xót của Chúa.</span></span></p>

sủng mà Thiên Chúa muốn ban cho chúng ta là làm cho chúng ta nhận biết tội
lỗi của mình. <span class="GramE">Đó là dấu chỉ cho thấy chúng ta được chữa
lành khỏi sự mù lòa.</span> Đó là dấu chỉ chắc chắn của <span class="GramE">
ân</span> sủng, ân sủng duy nhất của chúng ta trên trần gian và cũng là niềm
vui duy nhất trên thiên đàng.</span></p>
