Tôma nghi ngờ. Tôma đã vắng mặt khi Chúa Giêsu phục sinh hiện đến lần đầu tiên với các Tông Đồ, Tôma đã muốn phải được nhìn thấy và chạm vào Chúa Kitô để có thể tin vào sự phục sinh của Người. Và chính Chúa Giêsu đã nói với ông: "Vì đã thấy Thầy nên con tin." Thật vậy, như thánh Grêgôriô Cả đã chỉ ra trong bài giảng, dựa trên Tin Mừng của thánh Gioan, Tôma đã nhận thấy Người mà ông gặp, nhưng ông yêu Chúa bằng sức mạnh của người phàm, chứ chưa phải bằng chính con mắt đức tin, nên ông đã không nhìn thấy Chúa... 12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Một lòng tin như vậy chỉ có thể được vì trái tim của ông Tôma đã rung cảm và mở ra cho một cuộc sống mà bản chất là mầu nhiệm tình yêu. "Đặt ngón tay vào đây, và hãy nhìn xem tay Thầy. Đưa tay ra mà đặt vào cạnh sườn Thầy" (Ga 20,27). Hành động Chúa Giêsu yêu cầu ông làm để chứng thực cho giác quan của ông cảm nhận được, như trước đây Tôma đã nghĩ. Từ đó Chúa mời gọi ông hãy bước vào trong sâu thẳm tình yêu của Người, rung động từ trong chính tâm hồn, chứ không phải chỉ là những rung động thể chất tầm thường.
