tôi là tớ nữ Thiên Chúa. Tôi xin vâng như lời thiên thần truyền” (Lc 1,
38) ... Các bạn sẵn sàng loan báo cho những người trẻ cùng lứa tuổi với
mình, như các tông đồ đã làm: “Chúng tôi đã gặp Đấng Thiên Sai!” (Ga 1,
41).</span></p>

Gioan Maria Vianney, cha xứ Ars, tôi đã đọc trong sách của cha Francois
Erochu, hồi tôi còn ở tiểu chủng viện.</span></p>

tôi đã đổ vào tim tôi lòng kính mến Đức Mẹ, từ tuổi ấu thơ. Bà nội tôi,
mỗi buổi tối, lúc gia đình đọc kinh xong rồi, bà còn ngồi lần thêm một
tràng hạt. Tôi hỏi bà, bà đáp:</span></p>

thế, đã vun trồng hát giống ơn thiên triệu trong lòng chúng tôi.</span></p>

Đức Maria có một vai trò đặc biệt trong đời tôi. Tôi đã bị bắt ngày lễ
Đức Mẹ Hồn Xác Lên Trời, 15 tháng 8 năm 1975. Tôi ra đi với hai tay
không, trong túi không có gì cả, ngoại trừ một tràng hạt, và tôi đi bình
an. Mẹ tôi đã dạy tôi như vậy từ thuở bé. Đêm ấy trên tuyến đường dài
450 km, tôi đã đọc không biết bao nhiêu lần kinh “Hãy Nhớ”.</span></p>

Các bạn hỏi tôi, Đức Mẹ đã giúp tôi vượt bao thử thách trong đời tôi thế
nào. Tôi sẽ thuật lại cho các bạn một vài chuyện đang còn tươi rói trong
ký ức tôi. Lúc còn là một linh mục du học ở Rôma, tháng 9 năm 1957, tôi
đi Lộ Đức để cầu nguyện với Đức Mẹ. Quỳ trước hang đá, nhìn lên tượng
Mẹ, tôi nghe như Đức Mẹ nói với tôi như đã nói với thánh nữ Bernadette:</span></p>

Tôi run sợ, nhưng tôi chấp nhận và phó thác trong tay Mẹ. Tôi tiếp tục
học hành thi cử, và trở về Việt Nam, làm giáo sư, Giám đốc tiểu chủng
viện Hoan-Thiện, Tổng đại diện, Giám mục Giáo phận Nha Trang năm 1967.
Cám ơn Chúa , công việc mục vụ của tôi nói được là thành công.</span></p>

Tôi trở lại Lộ Đức nhiều lần và nhiều lần tôi tự hỏi: “Có lẽ lời Đức Mẹ
đã nói với thánh Bernadette không phải Mẹ cũng nhắc lại với tôi?” Thánh
giá bổn phận của tôi không đến nỗi quá nặng, dù sao tôi sẵn sàng chấp
nhận thánh ý Chúa.</span></p>

Tiếp đến mùa hè 1975, tôi bị bắt, bị cầm tù, ở trại cải tạo, bị biệt
giam... hơn 13 năm gian truân! Bấy giờ, tôi mới hiểu Đức Mẹ đã muốn
chuẩn bị cho tôi từ 1957: “Mẹ không hứa cho con hân hoan và an ủi ở trần
gian này, nhưng hứa đau khổ và thử thách”. Mỗi ngày tôi càng hiểu thâm
thúy hơn ý nghĩa của sứ điệp ấy và tôi phó mình trong tay Mẹ.</span></p>

Lúc những khổ đau thể xác và tinh thần trở nên quá nặng nề, tôi không
đọc kinh nổi, tôi chỉ lặp đi lặp lại “Ave Maria”, không biết bao nhiêu
lần mỗi ngày: “Lạy Mẹ, con quá yếu nhược, cong không đọc kinh nổi nữa,
con chỉ biết dâng lên Mẹ muôn vàn ‘Ave Maria’, xin Mẹ ban phát cho giáo
dân của con, cho mọi người, cho toàn thể Hội thánh đang cần đến lòng
thương xót của Mẹ. Tất cả với Mẹ, vì Mẹ và trong Mẹ”.</span></p>

Không những tôi cầu xin Mẹ ban ơn, nhưng tôi năng thưa với Mẹ: “Lạy Mẹ,
con có thể làm gì giúp Mẹ được? Con sẵn sàng theo lệnh Mẹ, chịu đựng tất
cả, làm tất cả vì ‘Nước Chúa Giêsu, con Mẹ’. Lúc ấy, tuy ở giữa gian
lao, tôi cảm thấy hết lo sợ và bình an.</span></p>

Lúc nào cầu nguyện với Mẹ Maria, tôi không thể quên thánh Giuse bạn
trinh khiết của Mẹ. Vì đó là một nguyện ước của Chúa Giêsu và Mẹ. Thánh
Giuse là người được Chúa Giêsu và Mẹ yêu mến cách đặc biệt nhất. Mẹ tôi
đã dạy cho tôi điều này.</span></p>

Maria Vô nhiễm không bỏ quên tôi. Mẹ đã sát cánh tôi dọc đường gập ghềnh
đen tối của lao tù. Trong những năm tháng thử thách triền miên ấy, tôi
đã cầu xin Mẹ cách đơn sơ mà đầy tin tưởng cậy trông: “Lạy Mẹ, nếu Mẹ
biết con không thể làm ích gì để phục vụ Hội thánh nữa thì xin Mẹ cho
con đặc ân được chết trong tù, để hy sinh trọn vẹn. Ngược lại nếu Mẹ
biết con còn phục vụ Hội thánh được, xin Mẹ cho con một dấu chỉ : ra
khỏi tù trong một ngày lễ của Mẹ!”</span></p>

sĩ trực reo. “Biết đâu có tin gì cho tôi? Đúng rồi, bữa nay là lễ Đức Mẹ
dâng mình vào đền thánh, 21 tháng 11 mà!”</span></p>

xin như vậy. Để đánh tan bầu khí lúng túng và ngạc nhiên ấy, tôi nói:</span></p>

ở tù bốn đời Tổng Bí thư Liên Xô: Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko, và
Gorbachev.</span></p>
