tù về, tôi được nhiều người chất vấn: “Cha sướng thật, trong tù cha đã
có nhiều thời giờ để cầu nguyện!” Không phải đơn giản như các bạn nghĩ
đâu! Chúa đã cho tôi có dịp hiểu rõ sự yếu đuối thể lý và tinh thần của
tôi. Thời giờ trong tù trôi qua chậm rãi, đặc biệt trường hợp của những
ai bị biệt giam. Bạn hãy tưởng tượng một tuần, một tháng, hai tháng
thinh lặng ... thấy lâu dài cách kinh khủng. Khi thinh lặng ấy kéo dài
từng năm, thì nó trở thành đời đời ... Ông bà ta thường bảo: “Nhất nhật
tại tù, thiên thu tại ngoại, nghĩa là, một ngày trong tù dài bằng ngàn
thu tự do”.</span></p>

Tôi nhớ lại chuyện ông già Jim. Cứ mỗi ngày lúc 12 giờ trưa ông ta vào
nhà thờ không quá hai phút. Ông từ (giữ nhà thờ) rất thắc mắc theo dõi,
rồi một hôm chận ông Jim lại và hỏi:</span></p>

Thời gian trôi qua. Jim già yếu, bệnh tật, phải vào bệnh viện, nơi khu
vực người già. Sau đó Jim yếu liệt, chuẩn bị đi xa ... Linh mục tuyên úy
và nữ tu y tá đến bên giường Jim:</span></p>

trò một chốc; lúc sau liệt giường tôi gọi tên họ, thăm hỏi, làm cho họ
cười. Với Jim ai cũng vui.</span></p>

Trước lúc Jim chết, người ta thấy Jim đưa tay chỉ chiếc ghế như thể muốn
mời ai ngồi, Jim mỉm cười, nhắm mắt ra đi.</span></p>

Những lúc tôi không còn sức để đọc nổi dù một kinh, tôi lặp đi lặp lại:
“Giêsu, có con đây”, tôi cảm thấy như Chúa Giêsu trả lời: “Thuận ơi, có
Giêsu đây!” Tôi vui vẻ và bình an.</span></p>

Các bạn hỏi tôi: “Cha thích đọc kinh nào?” Dĩ nhiên là tôi thích những
kinh của Chúa Giêsu dạy, của Hội thánh: kinh Lạy Cha, kinh Kính mừng,
kinh Tin kính...</span></p>

Tôi thích dùng lời Thánh kinh, lời Chúa để cầu nguyện, khi đọc lên những
Thánh vịnh, tôi sung sướng vì biết rằng đây là những kinh chính Chúa
Giêsu và Mẹ Maria đã đọc. Mấy anh công an gác tôi làm đôi việc để “cải
thiện” đời sống kinh tế, chẳng hạn họ cắt giấy rồi in tay ... bán cho
các công sở. Loại giấy “đầu thừa, đuôi thẹo” thì quét lại cả đống làm
“giấy vệ sinh”, tôi lượm giấy vệ sinh ấy, mượn kim chỉ, đóng thành sổ bỏ
túi, hai cuốn sổ tôi rất quí, một gồm trên 300 câu Thánh kinh bằng tiếng
Latinh để cầu nguyện và một gồm đầu đề của vài trăm bài hát cũng để cầu
nguyện. Còn bao nhiêu “giấy vệ sinh” khác mỗi ngày thu lượm một ít để
dành viết sách.</span></p>

Tôi rất ghi ơn sự huấn luyện ở chủng viện, những bài thánh ca đã ghi sâu
vào lòng tôi. Đặc biệt là tôi thuộc lòng hầu hết bài hát bình ca trong
kinh phụng vụ, chưa bao giờ tôi cảm thấy ý nghĩa sâu xa và xúc động như
vậy. Cũng không thể quên được những kinh Việt ngữ, tiếng mẹ đẻ của tôi,
mà cả nhà cùng cầu nguyện mỗi tối trong nhà nguyện gia đình. Tôi hình
dung được trước mắt Ông Bà, Ba Má và các em tôi, và nghe giọng mỗi người
đang cầu nguyện. Nhất là ba kinh Kính mừng và kinh “Hãy nhớ” mà Mẹ tôi
tập tôi đọc sớm tối từ lúc mới biết nói.</span></p>

Như tôi đã nói, tôi ở tù biệt giam chín năm, chỉ có tôi và hai người
gác. Để tránh cho khỏi thấp khớp và tê liệt, suốt ngày tôi không ngừng
đi lại, xoa bóp, thể dục và hát để cầu nguyện: ca vịnh thống hối
Miserere, kinh Tạ ơn Te Deum, kinh Chúa Thánh Thần Veni Creator, kinh
các Thánh Tử đạo Sanctorum Meritis. Những bài hát của Hội thánh, được
cảm hứng từ lời Chúa, như rót vào trong tôi lòng can đảm để theo Chúa
Giêsu.</span></p>

nghiệm ngục tù tăm tối, cô đơn, và ý thức được sự hiện diện của Chúa.
Ngài chấp nhận những đau khổ dâng lên Ngài vì muốn trung thành với Hội
thánh. Tôi cảm nghiệm được sự hiệp thông với Chúa Giêsu, với Đức Thánh
Cha, với toàn thể Hội thánh một cách tha thiết vững vàng mỗi khi tôi lặp

Giang xá, có ông lão nhà quê, tên là ông quản Kính, từ giáo xứ Đại Ơn
lẻn vào thăm tôi. Tôi không bao giờ quên được lời ông khuyên tôi:</span></p>

từng ở tù, nằm cùng buồng với tôi để mật thám tôi, sau đã thành bạn của
tôi. Trước ngày ông ta ra về, ông đã hứa với tôi:</span></p>

Tôi tin lòng thành thật của anh bạn, nhưng tôi hoài nghi làm sao một
người cộng sản mà đi cầu nguyện Đức Mẹ cho tôi! Sáu năm sau, đang lúc
tôi ở biệt giam, tôi đã được một bức thư của ông Hải, lạ lùng thật! Lạ
hơn nữa là lời lẽ của ông như sau:</span></p>

nhà thờ rồi. Tôi cầu nguyện thế này: Thưa Đức Mẹ, tôi không có đạo, tôi
không thuộc kinh nào cả. Nhưng tôi đã hứa sẽ đi cầu nguyện Đức Mẹ cho
anh Thuận, nên tôi đến đây. Xin Đức Mẹ biết anh Thuận cần gì thì cho anh
ấy”.</span></p>

ta phải cầu nguyện. Như Chúa Giêsu, trước khi làm phép lạ nuôi dân
chúng, đã ngước mắt lên trời, cầu nguyện cùng Đức Chúa Cha. Ngài đã chọn
Chúa trước rồi mới làm việc Chúa sau.</span></p>
