<font size="5">Năm 1513, lễ kính <i>“Thánh danh Maria” </i>được
Đức Giáo Hoàng Julius II ban phép cử hành tại Giáo Phận
Cuenta, nước Tây Ban Nha. Ban đầu lễ này được cử hành
vào ngày 15 tháng 9, với tuần bát nhật sau lễ Sinh Nhật
Đức Mẹ. Sau cuộc cải cách Breviary, lễ này bị đình chỉ
bởi Thánh Giáo Hoàng Piô V, nhưng được khôi phục lại bởi
Đức Sixtô V, và được chuyển vào ngày 17 tháng 9. Cũng từ
đó, lễ Kính Thánh Danh Maria lan rộng khắp Tây Ban Nha
và Vương Quốc Naples.</font></span></p>

tại nhiều dòng tu. Đức Innocent XI đã ban phép “Lễ Kính
Thánh Danh Maria được cử hành trên Toàn Giáo Hội. Thánh
lễ đầu tiên được cử hành vào Chúa Nhật sau Sinh Nhật Đức
Mẹ. Thánh Giáo Hoàng Piô X (+1914) đã ra chỉ thị cử hành
lễ này vào ngày 12 tháng 9 hàng năm.</font></span></p>

trong lần tái bản thứ ba của sách lễ Roma năm 2003, đã

Chủ đích thánh lễ là ca tụng thánh danh của Mẹ: “Mirjam”
(Maria); Thánh lễ tưởng niệm tất cả mọi đặc ân đã được
ban cho Đức Maria bởi Thiên Chúa, và muôn ân sủng chúng
ta nhận được qua lời chuyển cầu của Mẹ.</font></span></p>

ngôn ngữ cổ đại: Tiếng Do Thái gọi là <i>Myriam</i>;
trong Aramaic cũng gọi là <i>Maryam</i>, trong Cựu Ước
bằng tiếng Hy Lạp gọi là <i>Mariam</i> và tiếng Latin
trong Tân Ước gọi là </font><i><font size="5">Maria.</font></i></span></p>

khảo sát về cổ Ai Cập đưa ra gợi ý rằng <i>Maria </i>có
nghĩa là “nữ vương, đấng tuyệt sắc, hoặc được yêu
thương”. Một số học giả nghiên cứu các sách vở Ugaritic
(cổ Syrian) cho rằng tên <i>mrym</i> phát xuất từ động
từ <i>rwn</i>, vì thế có nghĩa “cao sang, nhẹ nhàng, cao
cả, hoặc được kính trọng.” Những điều này xứng với lời
chào của Tổng Thần Gabriel trong ngày Truyền Tin: “Kính
mừng Maria, đầy ơn phúc [hoặc mừng vui lên, ái nữ đầy
ơn]! Chúa ở cùng bà. Bà được chúc phúc trong các người
phụ nữ.” (Luca 1:28)</font></span></p>

Thiên Chúa thật, ngôi hai trong Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa đã
đến trong thế gian, và đã trở thành người thật nhờ sự
thụ thai của Maria qua quyền lực Chúa Thánh Thần.</font></span></p>

Mẹ là đấng đầy ơn phúc. Bởi vì tên này nhắc chúng ta
rằng Mẹ là đấng đầy ơn phúc, được chúc phúc giữ các
người phụ nữ.</font></span></p>

theo ngôn ngữ Aramaic, ngôn ngữ được nói vào thời bấy
của Đức Mẹ là <i>Mariam </i>. Tên gọi này có nghĩa là
“đắng đót”, nhưng qua các thế kỷ, các thánh nhân và các
học giả đã có những cắt nghĩa và giải thích khác nhau.
Một sự pha trộn giữa nguyên ngữ và lòng sùng mộ. Sau đây
là một số những lời ca tụng mà các thánh đã dành cho Đức
Mẹ khi suy niệm về Thánh Danh của Người: </font></span></p>

nghĩa là Sao Biển; và không nghi ngờ gì vì Sao trên biển
này là thế gian. Vì thế, chúng ta hãy ngước mắt nhìn lên
vì Sao đã xuất hiện trên trái đất hôm nay để Người hướng
dẫn chúng ta, để Người chiếu sáng chúng ta, để Người có
thể chỉ lối, để Người có thể giúp chúng ta để chúng ta
có thể vượt lên. Và thật là tốt đẹp để tên Maria được
đặt vào bước thang mà chúng ta đang nói đến, ở đó, chúng
ta phải bắt đầu trèo lên. Như Thánh Ký đã nói, Giacóp
sinh Giuse, chồng của Maria, vì thế ngay từ giây phút
lời cầu của chúng ta cất lên, Người đã xuất hiện bên
chúng ta và đón tiếp chúng ta trong sự săn sóc, chiếu
sáng chúng ta, và đồng hành với chúng ta trên con đường

biển, chiếu sáng, <sup>3 </sup>Maria được hiểu là Thánh
Mẫu. Maria là biển đắng đối với các quỷ thần, đối với
con người, Mẹ là Sao Biển; với các Thiên Thần, Mẹ là
vinh quang tỏa sáng, và với toàn thể tạo vật, Mẹ là

thể ân sủng của Ngài và gọi đó là Mary hay Maria… Khoa
báu vô biên không gì khác hơn là Maria, Đấng mà các thần
thánh đã xưng tụng “khoa tàng của Chúa”. Vì từ sự trọn
đầy của Mẹ tất cả chúng ta được trở nên giầu có.” (St.

<font size="5">Thật không có gì khó khăn để hiểu tại sao
có nhiều cách diễn tả tên “Maria”, vì những điều này hàm
chứa nhiều giáo huấn và căn bản đức tin. Một số trong đó
đã diễn tả tên “Maria” bằng cách nhấn mạnh đến mối giây
liên kết giữa Rất Thánh Trinh Nữ Maria với Giáo Hội.
Phát xuất từ tiếng Do Thái, động từ mara, nghĩa là “ơn
phúc hoặc mạnh mẽ” và quy vào vẻ đẹp của Đức Mẹ và sự
sản sinh thần linh của Mẹ. Mẹ là <i>Tota Pulchra</i>,
Đấng Tuyệt Mỹ.</font></span></p>

niệm về lễ này còn nói thêm: “Toàn thể thế giới ngập
tràn vinh quang của Mẹ, và điều này một cách hết sức
thật đối với những người Kitô Giáo chúng ta, những người
đã chọn Mẹ là Quan Thầy, và là Đấng bảo vệ các quốc

back to St. Jerome [+420]. It has been said that the
great Doctor had originally used the phrase <i>Stilla
Maris</i> to describe Mary as a "drop of the sea," the
sea being God. A copyist's error, then, could have
resulted in <i>stilla</i> [drop] being written down as <i>stella</i> [star].
Of course, the hallowed title, "Star of the Sea," suits
Our Lady perfectly.</font></span></p>

[2] "Bitter sea [mara = bitter; yam = sea]," in addition
to the interpretation given by St. Bonaventure, also
calls to mind Our Lady's Seven Sorrows and the sword
which "pierced" Her soul on Calvary, recalling the
lamentation of the mother-in-law of Ruth, who had lost a
husband and two sons: "Call me not noemi, [that is,
beautiful,] but call me <i>Mara</i>, [that is, bitter,]
for the Almighty hath quite filled me with bitterness
[Rt. 1: 20]." <i>Maror</i> are "bitter herbs," such as
are found on the seder plate at Passover.</font></span></p>

[3] The "Illuminated" points us to St. John's
apocalyptic image of the "Woman clothed with the Sun," a
dual image encompassing both, the Catholic Church and
Mary, the Mother and Image of the Church.</font></span></p>

[4] The interpretation "Lady" for Mary was also proposed
by St. Jerome, based on the Aramaic word, <i>mar</i>,
meaning <i>"Lord."</i> This would render the meaning "<i>Lady</i>"
in the regal or noble sense [as in "Lord and Lady."]
Catholic sensibility, however, recognizing in Mary the
simple dignity of a Mother, as well as the grandeur of a
Queen, did not hesitate to add an affectionate touch to
this majestic title. Mary is not just "<i>Lady</i>"; She
is "Madonna," Notre Dame i.e., she is Our Lady.</font></span></p>
