cuộc khổ nạn và cái chết của Chúa chúng ta. Theo truyền

vì lý do này, trong một số hình vẽ, các họa sỹ đã trình
bày Trái Tim của Mẹ bị vòng gai nhọn bao quanh, hoặc bẩy
lưỡi gươm đâm thâu. Quan trọng hơn hết là ý nghĩa của
những nỗi đau này đã phản ảnh lời Fiat (xin vâng) mà Mẹ
đã thưa với Tổng Thần Gabriel trong ngày Truyền Tin.
Theo Lm.<strong> </strong>Fr. William Saunders qua bài
viết “The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows” [1] đây, Lễ kính
Mẹ Đau Thương đã được phổ biến rộng rãi vào thế kỷ 12,
dưới nhiều tước hiệu, phát xuất từ những tài liệu được
các đan sỹ Biển Đức ở thế kỷ trước đó. Và rồi đến thế kỷ
mười bốn và mười lăm, lễ này đã được cử hành trên toàn
Giáo Hội. </span></font></p>

đặc biệt, năm 1482, lễ đã được ghi vào Sách Lễ Roma dưới
tước hiệu, Đức Mẹ Sầu Bi (Our Lady of Compassion) nhấn
mạnh đến tình yêu thương cao cả của Mẹ Thánh Đức đã phải
chịu trong cuộc thương khó của Con. Chữ <i>compassion </i>bắt
nguồn từ tiếng Latin có nghĩa là cắm rễ và đau khổ tức
là sầu khổ với. Sự đau khổ của Đức Maria vượt xa tất cả
chúng ta, bởi vì Mẹ là mẹ Chúa Giêsu, Đấng không chỉ là
Con của Mẹ mà còn là Chúa của Mẹ và cũng là Đấng Cứu
Thế. Mẹ đã cùng chịu đau khổ với Con của mình. Năm 1727,
Đức Giáo Hoàng Benedict XIII đã truyền ghi Lễ Mẹ Sầu Bi
vào Lịch Giáo Hội, Thứ Sáu trước Chúa Nhật Lễ Lá. Lễ này
đã được sửa đổi và được ghi trong Sách Lễ Roma (<i>Roman
Missal</i>) năm 1969.</span></font></p>

(Seven Dolors) đã được cử hành vào Chúa Nhật sau 14
tháng 9, Lễ Suy Tôn Thánh Giá, Lễ Mẹ Sầu Bi đã được ghi
vào Lịch Roma năm 1814. Sau này Thánh Giáo Hoàng Piô X
đã quyết định cử hành vào ngày 15 tháng 9.</span></font></p>

Mẹ Đau Thương, Mẹ Bẩy Niềm Đau cũng chính là Mẹ Rất
Thánh đã đứng một cách trung thành và can đảm dưới chân
thánh giá hiệp dâng Con của mình lên Thiên Chúa để cứu
chuộc nhân loại. Hình ảnh này đã được Thánh Ký Gioan ghi
lại: Từ trên thánh giá, nhìn xuống thấy Mẹ và môn đệ
Người yêu, Chúa Giêsu đã nói với Mẹ mình: <i>“Hỡi bà,
đây là con bà”.</i> Gioan là đại diện những người con mà
Mẹ đã sinh ra dưới chân thập giá. Cũng qua người môn đệ,
Ngài phán với tất cả chúng ta: <i>“Này là mẹ con.” </i>(Gioan

sự đau đớn của Mẹ Rất Thánh chúng ta, Thánh Giáo Hoàng
Gioan Phaolô II đã lưu ý các tín hữu rằng Mẹ Maria Rất
Thánh đã trở nên người an ủi những ai sầu khổ tâm hồn
cũng như thể xác. Mẹ biết những nỗi đau của chúng ta,
bởi vì chính Mẹ đã đau những nỗi đau ấy. Từ Belem tới
núi Calvary. ‘Lòng Mẹ đã bị một lưỡi gươm đâm thâu’.
Maria là người Mẹ Tinh Thần của chúng ta, người Mẹ luôn
luôn thấu hiểu con cái mình và luôn an ủi chúng khi gặp
sầu khổ. Vì sứ mệnh đặc biệt của Mẹ là yêu thương chúng
ta. Mẹ đã nhận sứ mệnh này từ trên thánh giá Chúa Giêsu
để chỉ yêu thương chúng ta và luôn luôn cứu vớt chúng
ta. Nhưng cách mà Mẹ Maria an ủi chúng ta hơn hết là chỉ
cho chúng ta Đấng Bị Đóng Đinh và Đấng An Ủi của chúng
