mầu, khó hiểu đối với lý trí tự nhiên và con mắt người
trần, nhưng tín điều Mẹ Thiên Chúa là cao siêu nhất, vì
nó đụng chạm đến Thiên Chúa. Thánh Augustine (354-430
AD) khi giảng về ơn trọng đại mà Thiên Chúa đã thực hiện
nơi Đức Maria, đã nói: </font></span><b><span lang="EN" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif"><font size="5">“Ngài
đã biết mẹ Ngài trong tiền định, ngay trước khi Ngài tạo
dựng nên Mẹ; là Thiên Chúa, ngay trước đó, Ngài đã tạo
nên mẹ của Đấng, như là con người, Ngài được tạo nên,

<font size="5">Cụm từ “Mẹ Thiên Chúa” đã xuất hiện từ
thế kỷ thứ ba. Nó được dùng trong phụng vụ của một vài
giáo hội, bao gồm cả Giáo Hội Công Giáo Roma. Mẹ Thiên
Chúa cũng là một trong các chủ đề được thảo luận tại
Công Đồng Ephesô năm 431. Các nghị phụ lúc đó đã dùng
nguyên ngữ Hy Lạp gọi Đức Mẹ là Theotókos (có nghĩa là
“người mang Thiên Chúa” hoặc “ Người sinh ra Thiên
Chúa”). Các ngài gọi Mẹ là Theotokos để phản lại với chủ
thuyết của Nestorius, Giám Mục Constantinople, khi ông
nêu lên chủ thuyết phân chia bản tính và con người của
Chúa Cứu Thế. Theo ông, nhân tính của Chúa Cứu Thế và
thiên tính của Ngài, đó là hai chủ thể hoàn toàn khác
nhau và không có sự kết hợp với nhau. Cũng theo
Nestorius, Đức Maria chỉ sinh ra Đức Kitô chứ không sinh
ra được Thiên Chúa. Maria là mẹ nhân tính của Ngài, điều
mà một cách rõ ràng hoàn toàn tách khỏi Thiên Tính của
Ngài – Chúa Giêsu là hai con người trong một thân xác.</font></span></p>

thế, Ngài là Ngôi Hai Thiên Chúa với hai bản tính: Là
Thiên Chúa thật và là người thật. Bản tính Thiên Chúa và
loài người của Người không thể tách rời nhau được. Vì
Ðức Kitô là Thiên Chúa làm người (Colossians 2:9,
Galatians 1:1,14), nên nếu Ðức Maria là Mẹ Ðức Kitô, thì
Người cũng chính là Mẹ Thiên Chúa. Điều lạ lùng là Tín
điều Mẹ Thiên Chúa sau này cũng lại được Lutherô, và
Calvin những nhà sáng lập các giáo phái Tin Lành đồng
chấp nhận. Martin Lutherô, người sáng lập đạo Tin Lành

gọi Mẹ không những là mẹ con người, nhưng còn là Mẹ
