“Et antiquum documentum. Novo cedat ritui.” (Nghi lễ cũ nhường
nghi lễ mới). Trong kinh Tantum Ergo được hát trước khi ban phép
lành Thánh Thể, Thánh Tôma Aquinas đã ca tụng nghi lễ hiến tế
Thánh Thể thay cho các nghi lễ trong Cựu Ước. Chúa Giêsu đã trở
nên tâm điểm của mọi nghi lễ. Trong Thánh Thể, Ngài là lễ vật và
là Đấng tế lễ.</span></p>

Nhưng một trong những thay đổi gần đây có liên quan tới Phụng Vụ
của Giáo Hội đang gây nhiều tranh cãi là việc Đức Giáo Hoàng
Phanxicô, ngày 16 July 2021 đã ban hành Tông Thư dưới dạng Tự
Sắc Traditionis Custodes - Những người bảo vệ truyền thống
- nhằm thống nhất và hệ thống hóa việc cử hành thánh lễ theo
Công Đồng Trent (1545 và 1563) đã được Đức Bênêđíctô XVI trước
đây cho phép. </span></p>

Trong số những người tỏ ý bất bình với quyết định của Giáo Hoàng
gồm hồng y, tổng giám mục, giám mục và giáo sỹ. Tôi không thuộc
thành phần giáo phẩm, giáo sỹ. Tôi cũng không phải là một nhà
thần học, một giáo sư phụng vụ hay lịch sử Giáo Hội. Những gì
tôi trình bày ở đây thuộc cảm nghiệm của một người đã từng có
trải nghiệm về cả hai hình thức Thánh lễ: Thánh lễ Công Đồng
Trent và Thánh Lễ Thánh Giáo Hoàng Phaolô VI, cũng được gọi là
thánh lễ theo nghi thức Roma sau công đồng Vaticanô
II (1962-65).</span></p>

Nhớ lại khoảng 70 năm trước, mỗi khi đi lễ, một hành động bị coi
như bắt buộc, miễn cưỡng và không mấy thích thú, vì không đi là
bị bố đánh đòn. Thánh lễ thời đó được cử hành bằng tiếng Latin,
linh mục quay lưng về phía giáo dân. Đến với nhà thờ bằng tâm
thức miễn cưỡng lại không hiểu cha đọc gì, nói gì, làm gì mà còn
phải ngồi nghe một bài giảng dài, thường thì hay ít giở nhiều,
nên tham dự thánh lễ kiểu đó đúng với nghĩa là đi xem lễ. “Đi
xem lễ” hợp với cách diễn tả của phần đông các linh mục khi nói
về việc cử hành thánh lễ là “đi làm lễ”. Chỉ tiếc một điều là
việc làm ấy được nhiều vị lập đi, lập lại thường xuyên một cách
rất nhàm chán. Với suy nghĩ non nớt của tôi lúc bấy giờ, thà ở
nhà ngủ còn sướng hơn!</span></p>

Nhờ sự hướng dẫn của Chúa Thánh Thần, sau Công Đồng Vaticanô II,
thánh lễ và các nghi thức phụng vụ kể cả các bí tích được canh
tân và chuyển qua thành tiếng địa phương (tiếng mẹ đẻ), nên ít
nhất ngoài phần giảng giải ra, tôi cũng còn nghe và hiểu lơ mơ
về các lời cầu, nhất là các bài đọc trong đó có Phúc Âm để biết
Chúa nói gì, làm gì, và những gì Ngài đã thực hiện cho phần rỗi
của tôi và của nhân loại. Thích nhất là phần thánh ca với những
bài thánh ca hoàn toàn bằng tiếng Việt nghe đến đâu hiểu đến đó.
Nó khác hẳn với phần thánh nhạc trước đó hát bằng tiếng Latin mà
người hát cũng như người nghe chẳng biết nó như thế nào? Trong
tinh thần đổi mới này, tôi thấy mình không phải miễn cưỡng đi lễ
và không nhàm chán xem lễ, nhưng ít nhất là được cùng với linh
mục, giáo dân dâng lễ, hay hiệp dâng thánh lễ.</span></p>

Vậy tại sao ở các nước Âu Mỹ, ngày nay lại có một số thành phần
cứ đòi cho được cử hành thánh lễ cổ điển theo tinh thần công
đồng Trent? Tôi thực sự không biết, nhưng có lẽ nó phát xuất từ
quan điểm của Tổng Giám Mục Marcel François Marie Joseph
Lefebvre</span><font face="Times New Roman, serif" size="5"> </font><span
style="font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif">người Pháp.
Ông là nghị phụ tham dự công đồng Vaticanô II, nhưng rồi cũng
chính ông đã phản đối quyết định của công đồng trong việc canh
tân thánh lễ. Dĩ nhiên, phong trào nào cũng vậy, quan điểm của
ông cũng thu hút được một số người theo ông. Năm 1970 ông lập
Huynh Đoàn Thánh Piô X để quyết tâm duy trì thánh lễ Latin. Sinh
hoạt này đã gây ra nhiều phiền toái cho Giáo Hội. Thánh Giáo
Hoàng Gioan Phaolô II và Giáo Hoàng Bênêđíctô XVI đã cố gắng đối
thoại với nhóm này nhưng vẫn không kết quả.</span></p>

Tại Việt Nam không có cái cảnh đòi hỏi này nên Giáo Hội Việt Nam
xem ra nhẹ nhõm, nhưng ở các nước Âu Mỹ thì không phải vậy, nên
vẫn có những thánh lễ quay lên và bằng Latin ở một số địa điểm,
một số nơi, thu hút một số người. Kinh nghiệm của tôi về thánh
lễ kiểu này bỗng sống lại khoảng thời gian gần đây khi tham dự
thánh lễ an táng của mẹ một người bạn sinh hoạt cùng nhóm. Bà
này thuộc thành phần bảo thủ theo nhóm Lefebvre nên quyết định
phải được làm lễ qui lăng (lễ an táng) trong một nhà thờ có cử
hành thánh lễ Latin và theo nghi thức cũ. Tham dự thánh lễ (đúng
hơn là xem lễ) hôm đó mọi người nữ phải trùm đầu bằng khăn
choàng đen. Thánh lễ được cử hành bằng tiếng Latin, linh mục
quay lưng về phía giáo dân. Ký ức quay về thời xa xưa và thật sự
hôm đó tôi phải giục lòng tin nhiều hơn mới cầm lòng, cầm trí mà
“xem” cho hết ván lễ (tiếng người xưa vẫn gọi là thánh lễ). Dĩ
nhiên cuối cùng thì cũng xong, ra về và không hiểu, không biết
gì hết. Tôi tự hỏi, như vậy thì có ích gì? Làm như vậy để làm
gì?</span></p>

Theo tôi, so sánh với Thánh lễ Tridentine cũng được gọi là Thánh
Lễ Latin Truyền Thống, được cử hành theo nghi lễ trong Giáo Hội
Công Giáo theo sách lễ Roma từ năm 1570 đến 1962, và thánh lễ
được cử hành từ năm 1962 tới giờ thì thánh lễ vẫn là thánh lễ.
Chúa Giêsu vẫn là Đấng Tế Lễ và là Của Lễ. Hy lễ thập giá năm
xưa vẫn tái hiện trên bàn thờ. Người tham dự kể cả linh mục lẫn
giáo dân đều được nuôi dưỡng bằng bàn tiệc thiên đình gồm Lời
của Chúa và Thánh Thể. Tuy nhiên, nếu được hỏi ý kiến, tôi vẫn
thấy thánh lễ được cử hành như hiện nay gần gũi, dễ hiểu, và hấp
dẫn người tham dự hơn. Bởi thế, tôi dùng từ tham dự hay dự lễ
thay cho từ đi lễ hoặc xem lễ.</span></p>
