giống như bao người phụ nữ Việt Nam truyền thống, bà thương
chồng, thương con, luôn hy sinh hết mình, lo lắng cho người mình
yêu. Dĩ nhiên, bà cũng mang cái bản tính muôn thuở của phụ nữ là
hay nói và hay càm ràm. Dầu vậy, hai đức tính này không phải lúc
nào cũng làm người khác khó chịu, bực bội; mà ngược lại, nó là
một cái gì mà không thể thiếu trong sinh hoạt gia đình. Nói theo
kiểu nói của thầy (bố) tôi, “Không có thì thiếu mà có thì thừa”.
Chính vì vậy mà mỗi lần mẹ tôi có chuyện phải vắng nhà vài ba
bữa là từ bố tới con, ai ai cũng cảm thấy căn nhà trở nên vắng
vẻ và thiếu thiếu một cái gì.</span></p>

thầy tôi lại có dịp biểu diễn cái tài hút thuốc lào của ông bằng
cách viên thuốc, châm lửa, hít một hơi kêu ro ro cả nhà, rồi nhả
một làn khói thuốc điệu nghệ, đôi mắt lim dim nhìn lên trần nhà
nói: “Đứa nào nghịch thì chửi đứa đó. Bố nó đang ngồi hút thuốc
lào.” Và như chiết radio vặn đúng đài, bà càng la to: “Nối giáo
cho giặc. Bố nào con nấy, bảo sao con nó không hư.’’</span></p>

người chiều con nhất nhà, đặc biệt là cô út của bà. Nhớ lại,
những năm bà còn sống, thỉnh thoảng tôi về thăm bà là bà vui vẻ
nấu cho các món ăn mà còn bé tôi vẫn thường ưa thích, rồi ép con
ăn nhiều cho khỏe: “Ăn đi. Ở Mỹ làm gì có những món này mà ăn
nhỉ?” Cảm động nhất là tối nằm ngủ trong mùng bà còn quạt cho
ngủ.</span></p>

sống xa nhà, nên vừa đến tuổi hiểu được lòng mẹ, biết thương mẹ
là phải xa cha mẹ, anh em. Tôi không biết có bao nhiêu đêm nước
mắt mẹ tôi đã chảy ra vì chúng tôi, cách riêng là tôi. Dĩ nhiên,
những giọt nước mắt ấy cũng là những giọt nước mắt chẩy xuôi!
Nhưng có những giọt nước mắt mà mẹ tôi dành cho tôi cách rất đặc
biệt. Chúng đặc biệt mà cho đến bây giờ mỗi lần nhớ lại, tôi
không khỏi xúc động, nghẹn ngào.</span></p>

tuổi đã già và sức khỏe đã yếu, tôi hằng ngày vẫn điện thoại về
thăm bà, và nhắc nhở các em, các cháu lo săn sóc cho bà. Thầy
tôi đã qua đời trước đó, còn lại mình bà, bởi đó, hễ mỗi lần tôi
nghe điện thoại reo là hồi hộp. Tôi sợ nhất là nếu có mệnh hệ gì
tôi không được gặp bà trước lúc bà lìa trần thì đối với tôi là
một bất hạnh. Trước đó lúc thầy tôi qua đời, ông đã bảo con cái
dấu không được báo cho tôi biết vì sợ tôi tốn kém đi về, sợ tôi
mất việc, sợ đủ thứ. Chính vì vậy, mà nếu lần này trước khi mẹ
tôi qua đời mà tôi không được gặp thì không biết như thế nào.</span></p>

Không biết bà còn sống được bao nhiêu lâu. Tôi hồi hộp quá, và
nói với em tôi rằng nói với mẹ ráng chờ anh về.</span></p>

ôi thật lạ lùng. Mẹ tôi nằm đó trên giường bệnh mắt nhắm nghiền,
không nói gì nhưng vẫn hoi hóp thở để chờ gặp đứa con trai đầu
lòng của bà. Còn tôi, ngồi trên máy bay mà trong lòng hồi hộp.
Dường như hôm đó máy bay bay hơi chậm! Và khi máy bay vừa hạ
cánh xuống phi trường Tân Sơn Nhất, tôi đã liên lạc ngay với mấy
đứa cháu đang chờ tôi bên ngoài.</span></p>

về gặp mẹ. Trên đường từ phi trường về, tôi lo là không biết

sợ nhất là khi về mà mẹ đã ra đi…</span></p>

an ủi: “Bác yên tâm, trước khi đi đón bác bà biết và bà nói muốn
gặp bác. Chạy như vầy là tương đối nhanh rồi. Sợ lỡ bọn công an
nó thổi lại thì còn lôi thôi hơn nhiều, mệt lắm bác ơi!”</span></p>

phản ứng gì nhưng chỉ thấy một số những giọt nước mắt ứa ra từ
hai cặp mắt đã nhắm nghiền của mẹ. Tôi hiểu là bà đã chờ tôi. Và
tôi biết đây là những giọt nước mắt cuối đời của mẹ chỉ dành
riêng cho tôi. Những giọt nước mắt cuối cùng mà mẹ tôi không bao
giờ chảy ra cho bất cứ ai.</span></p>
