đó là một tình yêu phát xuất từ trái tim, đặc biệt, trái tim bị
đâm thâu trên thánh giá của Chúa Giêsu, mà còn cần hiểu thêm
rằng, tình yêu này đã và đang cưu mang, nuôi dưỡng, bao bọc, và
sinh ra chúng ta. Đây là một tình yêu bao gồm cả tâm lý, thể lý,
và tâm sinh lý. Thiên Chúa khi tuôn đổ và ban lòng thương xót
của Ngài cho nhân loại. Ngài muốn cho chúng ta hiểu rằng, Ngài

thương dấu mặt luôn luôn quan tâm, lo lắng không chỉ linh hồn,
mà cả thân xác và những nỗi nhọc nhằn của chúng ta. Ngài có đó
khi tất cả mọi người quay lưng và bỏ rơi chúng ta. Câu truyện
được kể trong Phúc Âm Thánh Luca (10:25-37), về một người đi từ
Giêrusalem tới Giêricô, giữa đường bị cướp trấn lột và đánh nửa
sống, nửa chết. Có thầy tư tế và thầy Levi cả hai bất ngờ đi qua
con đường, và cả hai đều nhìn thấy cảnh tượng này, nhưng lần
lượt cả hai đã bỏ đi. Cuối cùng có một người Samarita đi qua,
ông đã thấy và đã ra tay giúp đỡ. Trước hết ông xuống ngựa, lau
sạch các vết thương bằng dầu và rượu. Sau đó đã vực nạn nhân lên
ngựa đến một quán trọn gần nhất, ông đã chi trả trước số tiền
cần thiết cho chủ quan để ông này chăm sóc cho người bị cướp,
ngoài ra còn dặn rằng, với số tiền ứng trước đó nếu thiếu hụt
bao nhiêu, khi về ông sẽ hoàn trả.</span></p>

bị thương tích - do Satan kẻ cướp giật các linh hồn - thì Chúa
Giêsu chính là người thương gia của Chúa Cha đi ngang qua trần
gian. Người là kẻ ngoại, có nghĩa là đến từ trời. Người không
phải là những người Do Thái theo nghĩa cùng đồng chủng loại với
chúng ta. Người đã xuống khỏi ngựa (ngai trời), rửa sạch những

nước của Người chảy ra từ trái tim bị đâm thâu, băng bó những
vết thương đó bằng chính tình yêu của Người. Quán trọ là Giáo

(1905-1938). hiện ra với nữ tu Maria Faustina Kowalska, Chúa
Giêsu đều ao ước thánh lễ này được thiết lập. Danh hiệu Chúa
Nhật Lòng Thương Xót (Divine Mercy Sunday) đã làm nổi bật ý
nghĩa sau lễ Phục Sinh. Theo nữ tu Faustina, Lễ Lòng Thương Xót
đón nhận những lời hứa rất đặc biệt từ Chúa Giêsu. Một trong
những lời hứa dành cho những ai có lòng tôn sùng Lòng Thương Xót
Chúa, là linh hồn đó sẽ được về Thiên Đàng ngay sau khi chết mà
không phải qua Luyện tội. </span></p>

Đức Giáo Hoàng Gioan Phaolô II thiết lập lễ này nhân dịp Ngài
tuyên phong hiển thánh cho nữ tu Faustina vào ngày 30 tháng Tư,
2000. Và vào ngày 22 tháng Tư 2001, một năm sau khi thiết lập

Thánh Lễ Kính Lòng Thương Xót khởi đầu bằng lời nguyện: “Lạy Cha
trên trời và Thiên Chúa của Lòng Thương Xót. Chúng con không còn
tìm kiếm Chúa Giêsu trong kẻ chết, vì Người đã sống lại và đã
trở thành Chúa của Sự Sống.” Lời cầu nguyện này liên quan đến
tình thương Thiên Chúa như căn bản chính yếu trong dự án cứu độ
của Thiên Chúa và nhấn mạnh niềm tin tưởng rằng qua tình thương
mà Thiên Chúa đã ban Con duy nhất của Ngài để cứu chuộc nhân

Giáo Hoàng Gioan Phaolô II cũng được Người biệt đãi: qua đời
tháng Tư 2005 trong chiều vọng Chúa Nhật Lòng Thương Xót. Ngài
được tuyên phong Chân Phước vào Chúa Nhật Lòng Thương Xót, 1
tháng Năm 2011 bởi Đức Giáo Hoàng Bênêđíctô XVI, vị kế nhiệm
Ngài, và được tôn phong Hiển Thánh cùng với Đức Giáo Hoàng Gioan
XXIII cũng vào ngày Chúa Nhật Tình Thương Xót, 27 tháng Tư, 2014
