Có thể đó là câu hỏi một thoáng bâng khuâng Chúa Giêsu thốt lên cho
riêng mình Người. Cũng có thể đó là câu hỏi dự báo một tình huống không
vui Chúa Giêsu cảnh giác cho các môn đệ. Có khi câu hỏi đó đợi chờ một
lời đáp tích cực mở ra cho lối sống đức tin lạc quan. Và biết đâu, câu
hỏi đó lại chẳng tố giác một thực trạng tiêu cực đang dần dà bào mòn
niềm tin tôn giáo?</span></p>

Nhưng đặt trong bối cảnh của Chúa Nhật cầu cho việc truyền giáo, theo
tinh thần của các bài đọc, câu hỏi ấy đã ẩn chứa một lời giải đáp. Đó
là: để lòng tin còn mãi trên mặt đất, mọi thành phần của Dân Chúa cần
phải sống tinh thần truyền giáo.</span></p>

Nói đến truyền giáo người ta thường nghĩ là phải dấn thân làm việc
truyền giáo, và ai càng làm được nhiều, người ấy lại càng được xem là
nhà truyền giáo lớn. Thực ra, quan niệm ấy cũng đúng, nhưng không đủ,
bởi dù không phủ nhận những kết quả lớn lao trong lịch sử Giáo Hội do
hoạt động truyền giáo mang lại, nhưng bao giờ cũng thế, bên trong những
hoạt động ấy còn là cả một tinh thần cầu nguyện tích cực của bản thân
các nhà truyền giáo cũng như của mọi thành phần Dân Chúa.</span></p>

Thiếu cầu nguyện, hoạt động sẽ không kết quả, hoặc sẽ lái kết quả sang
một hướng khác có nguy cơ “sáng danh tôi, tối Danh Chúa”. Vắng cầu
nguyện, hoạt động có thể trở thành nguy hại, nó đồng nghĩa với náo động
nếu không muốn nói là khua động ầm ĩ hoặc khuấy động ồn ào. Quên cầu
nguyện, hoạt động chỉ là hời hợt mang tính phong trào bùng lên đó nhưng
rồi cũng lịm tắt đó. Bạo phát bạo tàn, mau xộp mau xẹp! Bỏ cầu nguyện,
hoạt động coi chừng chỉ còn là một việc cá nhân, dẫu bỏ ra nhiều công
sức, nhưng vẫn không phải là hoạt động của Hội Thánh vốn luôn được nuôi
dưỡng phong phú bởi nguồn ơn Chúa Thánh Thần.</span></p>

Cầu nguyện là linh hồn của hoạt động truyền giáo. Nó đem đến cho những
hoạt động một sức sống kín múc tận nguồn sứ mạng.</span></p>

Bài đọc thứ nhất kể lại một hình ảnh sống động cho thấy mối tương liên
không thể tách rời giữa việc Môsê giơ tay cầu nguyện và việc Giosuê đánh
bại quân Amalếch. Khi Môsê hạ tay xuống, sức mạnh của ông Giosuê không
còn nữa, nhưng khi ông giơ tay lên, phần thắng đã nghiêng về phía
Giosuê. Chiến thắng ấy không riêng của Môsê hay riêng của Giosuê, mà là
của Môsê cùng với Giosuê, là dung hòa của cầu nguyện và hoạt động, là
tổng hợp của ơn thánh Chúa và nỗ lực con người.</span></p>

Thánh nữ Têrêsa Hài Đồng Giêsu đã được mừng kính vào đầu tháng mười này
cũng là một hình ảnh khác minh họa cho sự dung hòa giữa cầu nguyện và
hoạt động truyền giáo. Chín năm khuôn mình trong nhà kín Lisieux, chưa
hề làm việc truyền giáo bên ngoài, thế nhưng chỉ bằng hy sinh cầu nguyện
cho các vị thừa sai và cho công cuộc rao giảng Tin Mừng, thánh nữ đã
được Giáo Hội đặt làm Bổn Mạng các xứ truyền giáo, ngang hàng với thánh
Phanxicô Xaviê một đời bươn chải giảng giải đạo Chúa đến tận miền xa
Châu Á.</span></p>

Bản chất của Giáo Hội là truyền giáo, nên có thể nói được rằng không bao
giờ Giáo Hội thôi truyền giáo. Bốn phần năm dân số địa cầu chưa biết
Chúa, nên Giáo Hội phải truyền giáo đã đành, nhưng ngay cả một phần năm
đã biết Chúa, Giáo Hội cũng phải tái truyền giáo nữa. Xem như thế,
truyền giáo vừa là sứ mạng, vừa là số mạng, tức là sự sống còn của Giáo
Hội. Và tinh thần truyền giáo ấy một khi được hun đúc đều đặn bằng cầu
nguyện và hoạt động, ta có quyền hy vọng khi Chúa Kitô đến, Người vẫn
thấy niềm tin trên mặt đất.</span></p>

Được nuôi dưỡng bằng cầu nguyện dung hòa với hoạt động cây truyền giáo
nhất định sẽ vươn lên, nhưng không thể không biết đến yếu tố thời tiết,
mưa thuận gió hòa, hoặc nắng hạn mưa giông. “Nhất nước nhì phân tam cần
tứ giống”, đó là kinh nghiệm trồng cây. Song một cây lành như cây truyền
giáo phải biết chứng minh bằng phẩm chất của mình. Nói khác đi, tinh
thần truyền giáo cũng phải được chứng minh bằng chí bền sứ mạng, nghĩa
là vừa kiên tâm thực hiện những điều tốt, vừa kiên gan chịu đựng ngay cả
những điều xấu nữa (thánh Augustinô), phải bền chí khi thuận tiện cũng
như khi không thuận tiện.</span></p>

Khi thuận tiện là khi chí bền truyền giáo giúp ta tỉnh táo đừng để mất
mình trong hoạt động đến nỗi quên đi cầu nguyện, giúp ta phân biệt rõ
ràng đâu là đóng góp nhỏ nhoi của mình và đâu là ơn ban vô cùng to lớn
của Thiên Chúa, và còn mãi giúp ta không chạy theo những thành công
trước mắt để sau này khỏi phải trả giá đắng cay trắng tay thất vọng.
Trong một chừng mực nào đó, biết đâu lối sống của ông thẩm phán bạo
ngược “chẳng kính sợ Thiên Chúa mà cũng chẳng coi ai ra gì” trong bài
Phúc Âm lại chẳng có vài tương đồng với quan niệm háo thắng hoặc đắc
thắng của cách truyền giáo thời Trung cổ, vốn xem Kitô giới như một xã
hội lý tưởng, nên cố mà đưa người ta vào bằng chinh phục (truyền giáo)
hoặc gắng mà ép người ta về bằng cả chinh phạt nữa (thập tự chinh)?</span></p>

Khi không thuận tiện là khi chí bền truyền giáo không chỉ giúp ta chịu
đựng những khắc nghiệt thường xuyên, mà còn giúp ta biết tận dụng hoàn
cảnh để mà thanh luyện tâm hồn. Nếu những hoạt động phải chấp nhận giới
hạn ngoài ý muốn, thì chí bền như một mạch điện tự động “kiểm soát lợi
suất” sẽ bù lại những giới hạn ấy bằng một thao thức phong phú của lời
nguyện cầu. Và nếu như hoàn cảnh cụ thể không cho phép có một hoạt động
bên ngoài nào nữa, thì vẫn còn đó mênh mông một phương tiện truyền giáo
bằng gương sáng tình mến, bằng chứng tá đức tin và bằng cách sống tốt
đẹp đời Kitô của mình.</span></p>

Điều đáng sợ không phải là hoàn cảnh khắc nghiệt, mà là chính mình không
đủ chí bền mà vượt qua những khắc nghiệt ấy. Trong ý tưởng này, có lẽ
rất thích hợp khi đặt hình ảnh người đàn bà góa bụa của bài Phúc Âm,
nhiều lần đến quấy rầy ông thẩm phán mong được minh xét minh định minh
oan, ở đây như một cổ võ sống động cho chí kiên bền.</span></p>

Và dầu hoàn cảnh thuận tiện hay không (bài đọc thứ hai), chí truyền giáo
thiết tưởng cũng là biểu tỏ của niềm hy vọng, là tình mến khởi đi từ một
đức tin sống động vào Thiên Chúa là Cha nhân ái luôn muốn sự tốt lành
trong ơn cứu độ cho tất cả mọi người. Được như thế, chắc chắn khi Chúa
Kitô trở lại vẫn thấy niềm tin còn trên mặt đất trong chí bền của Giáo
Hội là thân mình Người.</span></p>
