Vì dân Ít-ra-en trách cứ Thiên Chúa và ông Mô-sê, Thiên Chúa trừng
phạt dân bằng cách cho rắn độc đến cắn chết họ. Dân chúng sám hối và
cầu xin Chúa tha thứ. Thiên Chúa tha thứ bằng cách truyền cho ông
Mô-sê: “Ngươi hãy làm một con rắn và treo lên một cây cột. Tất cả

vụ của ngày lễ Suy Tôn Thánh Giá này. Thiên Chúa biểu lộ tấm lòng
phụ tử của Người đối với dân Người. Khi dân lỗi phạm, Thiên Chúa
trừng phạt dân; nhưng “Người vẫn xót thương, tha thứ, không tiêu
diệt, nén giận đã bao lần, chẳng khơi bùng nộ khí”.</span></p>

Sách Dân Số, tiếp theo sau sách Xuất Hành và sách Lê-vi, lấy lại và

Giai thoại con rắn đồng thuộc vào giai đoạn sau cùng của cuộc hành
trình dài lâu trong sa mạc. Sau một thời gian tạm nghỉ ở ốc đảo
Ca-đê trong sa mạc, họ lại tiếp tục cuộc hành trình hướng về phía
bắc Pa-lét-tin. Họ phải chịu đói chịu khát và chán ngấy bánh
man-na:“Tại sao lại đưa chúng tôi ra khỏi Ai-cập, để chúng tôi chết
trong sa mạc, một nơi chẳng có bánh ăn, chẳng có nước uống? Chúng
tôi đã chán ngấy thứ đồ ăn vô vị này” (Ds 21: 5). Trước đây, họ đã
hoan hĩ đón nhận bánh man-na, nhưng gần cuối cuộc hành trình, họ
khao khát được nếm những thức ăn đa dạng hơn, vì thế họ đã kêu trách
Thiên Chúa và ông Mô-sê.</span></p>

Trình tự tái diễn đều đặn trong suốt cuộc hành trình trong sa mạc đó
là: dân Ít-ra-en cằn nhằn gây sự và tỏ thái độ ngờ vực, vì thế Thiên
Chúa trừng phạt dân. Dân hối hận ăn năn và cầu xin ông Mô-sê cầu bầu
cho họ. Sau cùng Thiên Chúa tha thứ. Tuy nhiên, cơn thịnh nộ của
Thiên Chúa còn triệt để hơn: không một người Ít-ra-en nào thuộc thế
hệ ra khỏi Ai-cập sẽ được đặt chân vào Đất Hứa, vì thế hệ này nghi
ngờ Thiên Chúa.</span></p>

Trước tai ương, dân chúng ăn năn và xin ông Mô-sê cầu thay cho mình.
Một lần nữa, ông Mô-sê cầu xin Thiên Chúa tha thứ cho dân của Ngài.
Sách Dân Số ghi lại nhiều lời cầu thay nguyện giúp của ông Mô-sê
thật cảm động. Đức Chúa động lòng và tha thứ cho dân. Trong trường
hợp này, Đức Chúa bảo ông Mô-sê: “Ngươi hãy làm một con rắn và treo
lên một cây cột. Tất cả những ai bị rắn cắn mà nhìn lên con rắn đó,
sẽ được sống” (Ds 21: 8).</span></p>

“Lấy độc trị độc” là một phương thức chữa trị rất cổ xưa. Mặt khác,
việc cúng tế con rắn như một vị thần linh rất phổ biến giữa các dân
tộc thời xưa. Việc thờ phượng này do việc nọc độc của vài con rắn
trở nên phương thuốc hiệu nghiệm trong việc điều trị nhiều chứng
bệnh. Ở Hy-lạp, thần Esculape được gọi thần dược, mà biểu tượng của
thần là một con rắn quấn quanh một chiếc đủa. Trong Đền Thờ
Giê-ru-sa-lem, có một bức tượng con rắn đồng được truyền tụng là con
rắn đồng do ông Mô-sê đúc trong sa mạc và được tôn thờ mãi cho đến
thời vua Khít-ki-gia (716-687 trước Công Nguyên) mới thôi (2V 18:
4).</span></p>

Ông Mô-sê sử dụng tín ngưỡng dân gian nhưng đưa vào đây một viễn
tượng tôn giáo thờ Đức Chúa (Giáo Hội Ki-tô hóa các nghi thức ngoại
giáo cũng theo cách thức như vậy). Chính Thiên Chúa cho dân một
phương thế cứu chữa và đòi hỏi dân một hành vi đức tin vào Ngài. Tác
giả sách Khôn Ngoan đã chú giải giai thoại này theo cùng một chiều
hướng như vậy: “Họ phải chịu hành hạ ít lâu như là chịu một lời cảnh
cáo; rồi họ được một dấu hiệu cứu thoát nhắc họ nhớ đến luật Ngài
truyền. Vì bất cứ ai ngước trông lên đều được cứu, không phải do bởi
vật họ nhìn, nhưng là do chính Ngài, Đấng cứu độ muôn người hết
thảy” (Kn 16: 6-7).</span></p>

thánh Phao-lô là tác giả hay chỉ là người trích dẫn. Bài thánh thi

Thánh Phao-lô rất yêu quý các tin hữu Phi-líp-phê mà thánh nhân đã
sáng lập vào năm 49-50 và đây là cộng đoàn Ki-tô hữu đầu tiên trên
đất Châu Âu. Phi-líp-phê là một thành phố quan trọng thuộc miền
Ma-kê-đô-ni-a; thành phố này được đặt tên theo tên vua Phi-líp-phê,
cha của đại đế A-lệ-xan-đê. Khi viết cho các tín hữu Phi-líp-phê,
thánh nhân đang sống trong cảnh giam cầm. Thánh nhân ước mong các
tín hữu Phi-líp-phê thân yêu của ngài biết đồng tâm nhất trí với
nhau, nhất là khiêm hạ tận đáy lòng. Vì thế, thánh nhân đưa ra cho
họ mẫu gương của Đức Ki-tô.</span></p>

văn Tin Mừng được trích dẫn hôm nay, không còn hình thức đối thoại.
Quả thật, trong suốt phần cuối này, chúng ta không còn gặp thấy hai
đại từ số ít: “tôi” và “ông” trong phần đối thoại trước đó, nhưng
thay vào đó là hai đại từ số nhiều: “chúng tôi” và “các ông”. Có lẽ
ông Ni-cô-đê-mô vẫn còn có mặt ở đó, nhưng không còn tham dự vào
cuộc đối thoại nữa. Người đọc có ấn tượng rằng chính ở bên kia ông
Ni-cô-đê-mô, một nhân vật có thế giá của Do thái giáo, Chúa Giê-su
mở ra một viễn cảnh của cuộc đối thoại giữa Ki-tô giáo và Do thái
giáo vào thời Giáo Hội sau này.</span></p>

Trong Tin Mừng Gioan, đây là lần đầu tiên Chúa Giê-su tự nhận cho
mình tước hiệu “Con Người”. Tước hiệu này gợi lên thị kiến của ngôn
sứ Đa-ni-en trong đó một nhân vật được gọi “Con Người” vừa thuộc về
thiên giới, siêu việt, vừa dự phần vào nhân tính (Đn 7: 13-14).
Trong đoạn Tin Mừng này, tư tưởng được khai triển giống như bài
thánh thi ca ngợi Đức Ki-tô trong thư gởi tín hữu Phi-líp-phê: từ
cuộc sống tiền hữu của Chúa Giê-su bên cạnh Chúa Cha đến việc hạ
mình của Ngài trong biến cố Nhập Thể, và sau cùng Ngài được Chúa Cha
tôn vinh trên trời.</span></p>

“Như ông Mô-sê đã giương cao con rắn trong sa mạc, Con Người cũng sẽ
phải được giương cao như vậy”. Trong câu này, thánh Gioan có chủ ý
dùng một động từ “giương cao” mặc lấy hai nét nghĩa: vừa theo nghĩa
đen “đưa cao lên”, vừa theo nghĩa bóng “chúc tụng, tôn vinh”. Chúng
ta cũng gặp thấy như vậy ở nơi hai lời công bố của Chúa Giê-su:
“Phần tôi, một khi được giương cao lên khỏi mặt đất, tôi sẽ kéo mọi
người lên với tôi” (12: 32-33) và “Khi các ngươi giương cao Con
Người lên, bấy giờ các ngươi sẽ biết là Tôi Hằng Hữu”(8: 28). Nếu
con rắn đồng đã là dấu chỉ cứu chữa hữu hiệu đối với dân Do thái,
thì Con Người được giương cao lên trên thập giá còn hiệu nghiệm biết
là ngần nào: “Để ai tin vào Người thì được sống muôn đời”.</span></p>

“Thiên Chúa yêu thế gian đến nỗi đã ban Con Một”. Thánh Gioan lấy
lại cùng những từ ngữ trong thư thứ nhất của mình. Đây là ý tưởng
rất tâm đắc đối với thánh Gioan, vị thánh ký duy nhất ban tặng cho
Đức Giê-su tước hiệu “Con Một”. Tước hiệu này có lẽ ám chỉ người con
một của ông Áp-ra-ham là I-xa-ác, người con mà ông Áp-ra-ham đã dẫn
lên núi cao để hiến tế cho Thiên Chúa. Tuy nhiên, trong phần kết của
câu chuyện này, Thiên Chúa chứng thực tấm lòng nhất mực trung tín
của ông Áp-ra-ham đối với Ngài: “Bởi vì ngươi đã làm điều đó, đã
không tiếc con của ngươi, con một của người” (St 22: 15) nên đã tha
chết cho I-xa-ác bằng cách thế vào một con cừu đực bị mắc sừng trong
bụi cây (St 22: 13). Chắc hẳn thánh Phao-lô đã suy niệm sâu xa cuộc
Tử Nạn của Đức Giê-su trong ánh sáng của câu chuyện này khi thánh
nhân viết cho tín hữu Rô-ma: “Đến như chính Con Một, Thiên Chúa cũng
chẳng tiếc, nhưng đã trao nộp vì hết thảy chúng ta” (Rm 8: 32).</span></p>

Ân ban tận mức này của Chúa Cha là lời chứng xúc động nhất về tình
yêu của Ngài đối với nhân loại. Tình yêu của Thiên Chúa đối với nhân
loại không gì khác hơn là muốn mọi người được cứu độ để được sống
đời đời: “Quả vậy, Thiên Chúa sai Con của Người đến thế gian, không
phải để lên án thế gian, nhưng là để thế gian, nhờ Con của Người, mà
được cứu độ”. Sau này, cũng chính thánh Gioan trong mối xúc cảm dâng
trào đã viết: “Tình yêu cốt ở điều này: không phải chúng ta đã yêu
mến Thiên Chúa, nhưng chính Người đã yêu thương chúng ta, và sai Con
của Người đến làm của lễ đền tội cho chúng ta” (1Ga 4: 10). Thánh
Giáo Phụ I-rê-nê cũng đã suy niệm sâu xa tình yêu Thiên Chúa như
vậy: “Vinh quang của Thiên Chúa là con người được sống”. Chúa Giê-su
trên thập giá không là một Thẩm Phán, nhưng là Đấng Cứu Độ. Giờ thập
giá là giờ mà tấm lòng thương yêu tha thứ của Thiên Chúa trổi lên
khúc ca khải hoàn. Đây là giờ vinh quang tột bậc của tình yêu Thiên
Chúa rực rỡ hơn bao giờ hết đối với nhân loại.</span></p>
