Chỉ Tin Mừng IV nói đến Nicôđêmô, một thành viên quan trọng trong
Phái Pharisêu – rất có thể cũng là một thành viên của Thượng Hội
Đồng -. Ông đã tận dụng bóng đêm để đến gặp Đức Giêsu, có thể cũng
vì đêm là thời gian yên tĩnh và an bình. Ông đại diện cho người
Israel, với trái tim vẫn còn tinh trong, đang đi tìm ánh sáng và xác
tín rằng vị Rabbi đến từ Nadarét, “một vị tôn sư được Thiên Chúa sai
đến”, có thể chỉ cho ông thấy ánh sáng.</span></p>

Chúng ta sẽ lại gặp ông giữa các thượng tế tại Giêrusalem đang tranh
luận với nhau xem có thể loại trừ Đức Giêsu cách nào. Nicôđêmô im
lặng lắng nghe rồi đã gây chuyện với họ: “Lề Luật của chúng ta có
cho phép kết án ai, trước khi nghe người ấy và biết người ấy làm gì
không?”. Nhưng họ đã mỉa mai ông: “Ông cứ nghiên cứu, rồi sẽ thấy:
không một ngôn sứ nào xuất thân từ Galilê cả” (Ga 7,51-52). Nicôđêmô
thật quá chân thành và lương thiện để làm thành viên của một nhóm
xảo trá!</span></p>

Động từ agapan ở thì quá khứ aorist (êgapêsen) nhắm diễn tả hành vi

mộtví dụ tuyệt hảo về động từ agapan được diễn tả ra thành hành
động, bởi vì c. 16 nói đến tình yêu Thiên Chúa được bày tỏ ra trong

Gioan dùng hai động từ có nghĩa là “sai phái” có vẻ không phân biệt:

khẳng định: “Tôi đến thế gian này chính là để xét xử”. Điều duy nhất
Thiên Chúa muốn, đó là cứu độ thế gian; nhưng biến cố Con của Ngài
đến cũng nhất thiết đưa loài người đến chỗ phải lấy quyết định;
quyết định trọng yếu nhất của đời người, là gắn bó với Con Một Thiên
Chúa (c. 18) bằng đức tin, hoặc ngược lại, từ chối tin vào Người.</span></p>

Đức Giêsu nhắc lại cho Nicôđêmô một biến cố đã xảy ra trong cuộc
Xuất Hành, biến cố này Người biết rất rõ, vì là “vị tôn sư được
Thiên Chúa sai đến”: con rắn đồng Môsê đã đúc và giương cao trong sa
mạc (x. Ds 21,4-9), và Người bình luận tích đó rằng tích đó tượng
trưng cho những gì sắp xảy ra cho Người. Con Người sắp được giương
cao trên thập giá để tất cả những ai nhìn lên Người thì sẽ được cứu.</span></p>

Nicôđêmô đã không hiểu điều Đức Giêsu ám chỉ khi Người nói “ông cần
được sinh lại bởi trên”, bây giờ lại càng ngỡ ngàng khi nghe nói đến
việc “giương cao Con Người”. Ông ngạc nhiên và có lẽ cũng buồn nữa.
Ông im lặng lắng nghe, chứ không biết hỏi thế nào nữa. Ông chưa được
soi sáng bởi ánh sáng Phục Sinh, nên những gì ông đang được nghe lúc
này là mầu nhiệm không sao dò thấu đối với ông. Ông chưa hiểu được
rằng “Tin vào Đấng được giương cao” có nghĩa là đưa mắt nhìn lên
“Đấng Chịu đóng đinh”, là Chúa Kitô bị đóng đinh trên thập giá, và
dựa vào Người mà đo lường mọi quyết định của ông, để cho Người hướng
dẫn các quyết định của ông. “Đưa mắt nhìn lên Đấng Chịu đóng đinh”
chính là coi Người là biểu tượng của ơn cứu độ, là nguồn mạch đưa
tới sự sống. “Đưa mắt nhìn lên Đấng Chịu đóng đinh” như thế cũng có
nghĩa là phải từ bỏ nhiều thứ, hy sinh nhiều chuyện. Tác giả TM IV
nói rằng một ngày nào đó người ta “sẽ nhìn lên Đấng họ đã dâm thâu”
(Ga 19,37). Vào ngày đó, Nước Thiên Chúa sẽ được thiết lập trên trần
gian.</span></p>

Đây là một câu nói có sức trấn an, một mạc khải phải làm cho lòng
chúng ta tràn ngập niềm vui và cậy trông. Tuy nhiên, mạc khải này có
thể bị phi bác bởi nhiều bản văn Tin Mừng khác cho thấy Thiên Chúa
và Đức Giêsu như là những thẩm phán nghiêm khắc (x. Mt13,31-42;
25,31-46…), nếu không được giải thích đúng đắn. Mt dùng các hình ảnh
giới thiệu Thiên Chúa như là thẩm phán là để nhắc các độc giả nhớ
rằng phải nghiêm túc quan tâm đến đời sống. Tuy nhiên, hình ảnh này
cần được bổ túc bởi hình ảnh “án xử của Thiên Chúa” trong TM IV.</span></p>

Đời sống của chúng ta sẽ được mở dần ra cho tới cùng, bởi ánh sáng
của Thiên Chúa, và ánh sáng này sẽ cho thấy thời gian chúng ta đã
sống thể theo “án xử của Người” và thời gian chúng ta đã phung phí
vì đã sống theo “án xử của loài người”. Nhưng “án xử” này không chỉ
kết luận đơn giản bằng một lời tuyên án là có tội hay vô tội. Điều
này không ích lợi gì. Án xử chúng ta cần nhất, án xử sẽ cứu chúng
ta, đó là án xử Thiên Chúa đi qua hôm nay, một án xử sẽ ngăn cản
chúng ta phí mất đời sống chúng ta. TM IV nhấn mạnh trên án xử này.</span></p>

Chính cái nhìn chúng ta nhận ra nơi bản văn (Thiên Chúa muốn cho
chúng ta được cứu độ) giúp chúng ta hiểu lời đọc trong Kinh Tin
Kính: “Người sẽ đến để phán xét”. Người đến từ đâu? Từ cây thánh
giá, từ Phục Sinh: Cây thánh giá lật ngược các giá trị của chúng ta,
và giúp chúng ta có thể lật ngược thất bại thành chiến thắng, nô lệ
thành quyền bính, nghèo khó thành giàu có, mất mát thành lời lãi,
thấp hèn thành vinh quang, tử vong thành tái sinh. Cây thập giá phải
là chuẩn mực giúp chúng ta đo lường thành công hay thất bại trong
cuộc đời. Chính án xử của Đức Giêsu Chịu đóng đinh sẽ nói lên sự
thật về lịch sử loài người. Chỉ duy án xử này của Người mà chúng ta
phải “sợ hãi”.</span></p>

sẽ quan tâm đến chúng ta riêng tư từng người, sẽ chỉ cho chúng ta
từng người biết con đường đưa tới ơn cứu độ, sẽ đưa ta đến chỗ hiệp
thông với Người và đi đến cuộc sống muôn đời. Đức Giêsu, Đấng chịu
đóng đinh, không phải là mộttư tưởng hay là mộtlý thuyết, một giả

thực. Từ đó, chúng ta cũng phải nhìn nhận rằng tình yêu của Thiên

Chúng ta suy ngẫm một đoạn bài giảng của thánh Antôn Pađôva: “Chúa
Cha đã gửi Con của Ngài đến với chúng ta, là “ân ban tuyệt vời, ân
ban hoàn hảo” (Ga 1,17). Ân ban tuyệt vời, không gì có thể vượt qua;
ân ban hoàn hảo, ta không thể thêm gì vào nữa. Chúa Kitô là ân ban
tuyệt vời bởi vì Đấng mà Chúa Cha ban cho chúng ta như thế là Con
Ngài, tối cao, vĩnh cửu như Ngài. Chúa Kitô là ân ban hoàn hảo; như
thánh Phaolô đã nói, “Một khi đã ban Người Con đó, lẽ nào Thiên Chúa
lại chẳng rộng ban tất cả cho chúng ta?” (Rm 8,32)… Ngài đã ban cho
chúng ta Đấng là “đầu Hội Thánh” (Ep 5,23). Ngài đã không thể nào
ban thêm gì nữa cho chúng ta. Chúa Kitô là ân ban hoàn hảo bởi vì,
khi ban Người cho chúng ta, Chúa Cha đã nhờ Người mà đưa mọi sự tới
mức hoàn hảo”.</span></p>
