Trong truyền thuyết Hy Lạp cổ xưa, thần chữa bệnh có tên là
Asklepios được biểu trưng bằng con rắn, chính vì lý do này, ngày nay
hình con rắn được dùng để làm biểu tượng cho ngành Dược và ngành Y
là những ngành khoa học nghiên cứu và chữa trị con người thoát khỏi
bệnh tật.</span></p>

Ý nghĩa cứu độ được bắt đầu bằng những biến cố của dân Chúa khi
thoát khỏi Ai Cập, thoát khỏi ách nô lệ đi vào đời tự do. Chính
trong sự tự do suốt bốn mươi năm ròng rã nơi hoang địa, họ gặp nhiều
thử thách tranh đấu. Bị thử thách, họ đã oán trách Thiên Chúa, vì
thế cơn thịnh nộ của Chúa đã để cho rắn độc trong sa mạc cắn chết
nhiều người. Dân Chúa biết tội và nhìn nhận tội lỗi của mình. Chúa
đã đoái thương nỗi thống khổ của họ. Người truyền cho Môisê làm một
con rắn bằng đồng, treo lên cây, để bất cứ ai bị rắn cắn, nếu nhìn
lên con rắn đồng sẽ được cứu (x. Ds 21,4-9).</span></p>

Sự giương cao của con Thiên Chúa qua cái chết trên thập tự để toàn
thể nhân loại nhìn vào với niềm tin thì sẽ được cứu độ. Thật thế,
nhân loại trải qua dòng lịch sử, cũng bất trung, nổi loạn khi sống
song hành với bóng tối, từ lúc nguyên tổ khước từ quyền sống trong
sự bao bọc tình yêu của Thiên Chúa khi nghe theo sự nổi loạn của
Satan. Thiên Chúa không bỏ rơi con người, tình thương của Ngài hứa
cứu độ và ơn cứu độ được thực hiện trong Đức Giêsu.</span></p>

Con người giương cao chính là Con Thiên Chúa đã được chính Thiên
Chúa hứa ban cho thế gian. Con Một của Ngài đến, không phải để lên
án, nhưng dẫn nhân loại đến đời sống vĩnh cửu: “Thiên Chúa yêu thế
gian đến nỗi đã ban Con Một để ai tin vào Con của Người thì khỏi
phải chết, nhưng được sống muôn đời” (Ga 3,16). Tình yêu vĩ đại của
Thiên Chúa cho nhân loại, chính tình yêu này là căn bản của công
trình cứu độ xuất phát từ cung lòng Ngài, cung lòng tình yêu luôn
trao ban dù rằng con người đã bất trung.</span></p>

Con Một của Thiên Chúa - Đức Kitô chết giương cao để cho con người
được cứu chuộc và được sống. Thánh Phaolô luôn ghi tạc trong tâm
khảm đức tin hình ảnh Con Thiên Chúa giương cao trên thập giá: “Tôi
không muốn biết đến chuyện gì khác ngoài một Giêsu chịu đóng đinh
vào thập giá” (1Cr 2,2), để rồi sự sống của Thiên Chúa tỏ hiện trong
cuộc sống của vị tông đồ dân ngoại: “Tôi mang trong thân mình cuộc
tử nạn của Ngài, ngõ hầu sự sống của Chúa Giêsu cũng được tỏ hiện
nơi thân xác chết dở của tôi” (2Cr 4,10).</span></p>

Nhân loại muốn đạt được ơn cứu độ phải đi theo con đường tin vào
thập giá, nơi giương cao Đức Giêsu - Con Thiên Chúa: “Ai tin vào Con
của Người, thì không bị lên án; nhưng kẻ không tin, thì bị lên án
rồi, vì đã không tin vào danh của Con Một Thiên Chúa” (Ga 3,18). Tin
tưởng vào Thiên Chúa và ơn cứu độ của Ngài dành cho qua cái chết của
con Ngài trên thập tự, nhân loại sẽ được cứu rỗi.</span></p>

Cuộc sống hàng ngày vốn bị chi phối bởi tội lỗi, bởi bóng tối của sự
dữ. Chúng ta ngước nhìn lên Đức Kitô bị treo trên thánh giá. Ngài
chiếu tỏa xua đuổi bóng tối trong cuộc đời chúng ta, đi theo ánh
sáng của niềm tin vào Đấng được giương cao, như chính Đức Giêsu đã
nói: “Những kẻ sống theo sự thật, thì đến cùng ánh sáng, để thiên hạ
thấy rõ: Các việc của người ấy đã được thực hiện trong Thiên Chúa”
(Ga 3,21).</span></p>

Mong sao mỗi người chúng ta cảm nghiệm được sức mạnh từ thập giá khi
ngước mắt nhìn với niềm tin: Đức Giêsu được “giương cao trên thập
giá”, và cũng được “đưa lên” ngự bên hữu Chúa Cha nhờ cuộc phục sinh
và lên trời (x. Ga 3,14; 8,28; 12,32-34). Người tin và đi trên đường
của Ngài, cũng sẽ được như Ngài, vì lời Ngài hứa: “Khi nào Ta được
đưa lên khỏi đất, Ta sẽ kéo mọi người lên với Ta” (Ga 12,32),</span></p>
