Dưới thời hoàng đế Hérachius I, những người Ba tư xâm chiếm
Giêrusalem và lấy mất phần chính của thánh giá thật mà thánh Hélène,
mẹ của hoàng đế Constantin đã để lại. Hérachius nhất định chiếm lại
thánh giá này. Ngài cầu nguyện, xin Chúa giúp đỡ và nung nấu lòng
can đảm. Quả nhiên, lời cầu xin của vua dược Chúa chấp nhận, ngài đã
đánh bại được quân Ba tư và trở về Constantinople giữa tiếng reo hò
của dân chúng. Với những cành olive, những ngọn đuốc cháy sáng,
thánh giá thật của Chúa được tôn vinh trong bầu khí khải hoàn. Hoàng
đế tràn trề sung sướng muốn trở về Giêrusalem với thánh giá này sau
mười bốn năm lưu lạc.</span></p>

Nhà vua tiến vào thành thánh, nhưng trước khi lên núi Sọ, ngài đã
không thể bước đi được nữa, khiến cho mọi người đều kinh ngạc sợ
hãi. Giáo trưởng Zacharie hô lớn: “Tâu đức vua, chắc chắn phẩm phục
của đức vua không xứng hợp với cảnh nghèo nàn và khiêm nhường của
Chúa Giêsu khi vác thánh giá”. Hérachius vội cởi bỏ mọi phẩm phục
sang trọng, và thay vào bằng bộ áo quần nghèo hèn. Tức thì nhà vua
cất bước một cách dễ dàng... và để tỏ ra sự khải hoàn, Chúa đã ban
nhiều phép lạ cả thể trong ngày ấy.</span></p>

2. Cây khổ giá của Chúa.</span></b></em></span></p>

Theo nhiều nhà nghiên cứu Thánh kinh, người ta cho biết một số đặc
điểm về cây thánh giá ấy. Cây thánh giá này bằng gỗ tùng rất nặng.
Cây dọc 4 thước rưỡi, cây ngang 2 thước rưỡi, nặng 100 ký. Vác kéo
lê thì giảm sức nặng đi 30 ký. Như vậy, Chúa còn bị sức nặng 70 ký
đè trên thân xác yếu ớt vì đòn vọt, và vác khệ nệ trên con đường dai
700 thước. Quãng giữa thánh giá, thường đóng một miếng gỗ để tội
nhân tì mông vào cho dễ đóng đinh, và đóng mỗi chân một đinh. Nay
các nhà kỹ thuật đã hạ miếng gỗ đó xuống làm đế đỡ chân, và hai chân
đóng chụm lại cho đẹp.</span></p>

II. Ý NGHĨA CÂY THÁNH GIÁ.</span></strong></span></p>

Thập giá là một dụng cụ để xử tử phạm nhân mà người Phênixi đã dùng
trước hết, kế đó người La mã cũng dùng. Nhưng chính phủ La mã chỉ
dùng hình phạt này cho kẻ nô lệ, dân bị trị, những người thấp hèn và
những người phạm các giống tội bị coi là nặng nề nhất như trộm cướp,
ít khi áp dụng cho công dân La mã. Đóng đinh trên thập giá là một
hình phạt đau đớn, nhục nhã và độc dữ nhất. Bàn về hình khổ đó, nhà
hùng biện trứ danh La mã xưa, ông Cicéron, đãkêu lên: “crudelissimum
et teterrimum supplicium” (cực hình ghê rợn và độc dữ nhất).</span></p>

Trước hết, phạm nhân bị đánh đòn cách tàn nhẫn, rồi cả tay và chân
đều bị những mũi đinh to xuyên qua và dính vào thanh gỗ. Bây giờ
thập giá được dựng lên. Máu ra nhiều, nhiệt độ trong người gia tăng
thành một cơn sốt rất nặng, phạm nhân bị kiệt sức, lưỡi bị khô cứng,
các mạch máu sưng lên, các đường gân căng thẳng, toàn thân nhức nhối
vô cùng. Thường thường phạm nhân bị thống khổ như vậy đôi ba ngày,
hoặc một tuần rồi mới chết. Thời gian ấy câm bằng bao thế kỷ!</span></p>

Như vậy, cây thập giá là dịp vấp phạm cho người ngoại. Thánh Phaolo
đã nhận xét: “Trong khi người Do thái đòi dấu lạ, và người Hy lạp
tìm sự khôn ngoan, thì chúng tôi lại rao giảng một Đấng Kitô đã bị
đóng đinh vào thập giá, cớ vấp phạm cho người Do thái, sự điên rồ
đối với người dân ngoại (Hy lạp)” (1Cr 1,22-23).</span></p>

Tại sao có thể xưng nhận một người chịu chết nhuốc khổ đến thế là
Chúa? Nếu Ngài toàn năng, sao Ngài đành thinh lặng trước thái độ ngỗ
nghịch của bao kẻ khôn ngoan. Thế lực gì kẻ bị chết trần truồng
không mảnh vải che thân: đó, lý luận của người đời. Với trí suy hiểu
tự nhiên, họ không thể thấy cao nhìn xa hơn được nữa. Cái chết của
Ngài có thể coi như một sự chúc dữ của Thiên Chúa (Dt 21,22). Ngài
đã nhận cực hình của kẻ nô lệ (Gl 3,13). Nói đúng hơn, không những
là cực hình nhưng còn là khổ nhục nữa (xem thêm Phil 2,8; Dt 12,2 và
13,3; Mt 27,42; Lc 23,39).</span></p>

Chúa Giêsu đã dùng cây thánh giá để chuộc tội cho nhân loại, nhờ cây
thánh giá mà nhân loại được sống. Như thế, đối với chúng ta, cây
thánh giá không còn đáng ghê tởm và kinh khiếp nữa, trái lại, nó là
niềm kiêu hãnh của chúng ta. Thánh Tông đồ dân ngoại kể như mình đã
bị đóng đinh vào thập giá với Chúa Giêsu, khoe về thập giá của Chúa
Giêsu và lấy làm vinh dự rao truyền thập giá ấy bất cứ nơi nào. Ngài
đã múc được sự khôn ngoan trong thánh giá Đức Kitô, một thứ khôn
ngoan mà người thông thái trần gian không có:</span></p>

“Lời giảng về thập giá Chúa Kitô, quả thực, đối với những kẻ hư hỏng
(cứng lòng tin) là điều điên rồ, nhưng đối với những ai được cứu rỗi
như chúng ta, lại là sức mạnh của Thiên Chúa, vì có lời chép: “Ta sẽ
hủy diiệt sự thông thái của người thông thái, và phế bỏ sự khôn
ngoan của người khôn ngoan (Is 29,14). Người khôn đâu? Văn sĩ đâu?
Người biện lý thế gian đâu? Nào Thiên Chúa đã chẳng khiến sự khôn
ngoan của thế gian này ra ngu ngốc sao? Vì thế gian chẳng theo sự
khôn ngoan Thiên Chúa để nhận biết Thiên Chúa, mà chỉ theo sự khôn
ngoan riêng mình, nên Thiên Chúa muốn dùng lời giảng điên rồ (về
thập giá Chúa Kitô) để cứu rỗi những ai tin theo!</span></p>

Người Do thái đòi phép lạ, người Hy lạp tìm triết lý: còn chúng tô
lại rao giảng Đức Kitô chịu đóng đinh: Đấng người Do thái cho là
gương xấu, còn dân ngoại cho là điên rồ, nhưng đối với những người
Do thái va Hy lạp đã được Chúa gọi, thì Đức Kitô lại là sức mạnh và
sự khôn sáng của Thiên Chúa: Vì sự điên rồ của Thiên Chúa còn khôn
sáng hơn sự khôn sáng của loài người, và sự yếu đuối của Thiên Chúa
còn lực lượng hơn sức mạnh của loài người” (1Cr 1,18-25).</span></p>

Chính vì cây thánh giá đã đem đến cho nhân loại ơn cứu rỗi, nên Giáo
hội đã xưng tụng: O crux, ave, spes unica: kính chào cây thánh giá
là niềm hy vọng độc nhất của chúng tôi. Trong bài ca vãn ngày thứ
sáu tuần thánh cũng có câu: Ôi, thánh giá trung tín, là cây cao qúi
hơn mọi cây: không rừng nào có cây lá, hoa trái như vậy. Ôi gỗ êm
ái, gỗ mang thân nặng đóng đinh dịu dàng! Hỡi miệng lưỡi, hãy ca hát
chiến thắng vinh hiển, hãy công bố cuộc chiến thắng oai hùng trên
thập giá: Đấng cứu độ thế gian tự hiến tế đã toàn thắng.</span></p>

Chúa có thể cứu rỗi chúng ta bằng nhiều cách, chỉ một giọt mồ hôi
của Chúa đổ ra cũng đủ dư để cứu chuộc nhân loại, nhưng Chúa Giêsu
không muốn thế, Ngài muốn dùng một hình phạt ghê sợ nhất để thực
hiện công cuộc cứu chuộc. Nhờ cây thập giá mà Chúa Giêsu đã lôi kéo
mọi sự và mọi người về với Chúa: “Khi nào chịu treo trên thập giá,
Ta sẽ kéo mọi sự về với Ta”. Nhờ cái chết đau thương ô nhục mà Chúa
Giêsu đã phục sinh vinh thắng để đem lại cho ta sự sống dồi dào.
Phải chết đi rồi mới sống lại được, không chết thì phục sinh làm
sao? Hạt giống không mục nát ra, làm sao có thể trổ mầm và sinh hoa
kết quả được? Chúa Giêsu đã nói như vậy:</span></p>

Hiện nay cục kim cương lớn nhất thế giới đuợc tìm thấy tại Nam phi
năm 1917. Cục kim cương này nặng 3200 cara. Người ta đã chia cục kim

là lớn nhất thế giới. Cục kim cương trên đã dâng cho Anh hoàng là

Nhiều mgười khôn ngoan đã đi tìm sự khôn ngoan trong thập giá của
Chúa nhưng chẳng bao giờ tìm được vì họ còn thiếu điều kiện “sine
qua non”, đó là đức tin. Họ chỉ nhìn thập giá dưới khía cạnh vật
chất thì làm sao có thể tìm thấy được ý nghĩa thiêng liêng của nó.
Họ giống như một ông lão ở nước Ba tư, nghe lời khuyên của một đạo
sĩ đi tìm vàng. Ông đã bán hết gia sản, đi khắp nơi để tìm, nhưng...
công dã tràng. Ông buồn bực nên đã tự tử. Một người nông dân đã mua
nông trại của lão và sau đã khám phá ra, đó là một mỏ kim cương lớn.
Và trong đó người ta cũng tìm thấy hai hạt kim cương lớn nhất thế
giới của Nga hoàng và Anh hoàng.</span></p>

Đời chiến quốc bên Tàu, có người nước Sở tên Biện Hoà tìm được ở núi
Kim sơn một viên ngọc qúi đem dâng vua Lệ Vương, vua trao cho thợ
xem thử, thợ bảo là đá. Biện Hoà bị khép tội khi quân và bị chặt một
chân. Đời vua sau là Bảo Vương, Hoà cũng đem dâng như trước và lại
bị chặt thêm chân nữa. Tới đời Sở Văn Vương, Hòa định đem dâng, ngặt
vì cụt hai chân không đi được. Hòa ngồi khóc ba ngày, có người hỏi,
Hòa đáp: “Không phải tôi muốn dâng công mà chỉ vì không có kẻ nhìn
ra ngọc qúi “. Sở văn Vương nghe được liền sai người đập đá ra, quả
thấy ngọc ở trong. Từ đó đặt là ngọc Biện Hòa.</span></p>

Biện Hòa là người có con mắt tinh anh, biết nhìn ra giá trị của viên

viên ngọc. Biện Hòa bị chặt hai chân chỉ vì không có ai nhìn ra được
viên ngọc ở trong thôi. Ở đời thiếu gì những cảnh tượng như thế xẩy

Trong đời sống thiêng liêng, số người như thế lại càng nhiều. Nếu
người ta chỉ nhìn mọi vật theo chiều hướng vật chất thì làm sao
người ta có thể tìm ra được cái ý nghĩa thiêng liêng cao qúi tàng ẩn
trong đó. Nếu người ta chỉ nhìn thấy cây thập giá với con mắt vật
chất thì cây thập giá ấy chẳng có nghĩa lý gì, mà còn làm trò cười
cho thiên hạ. Và những ai yêu mến cây thập giá thì đúng là NHỮNG KẺ
ĐIÊN, kẻ khùng, kẻ nông nổi, mê tín dị đoan. Nhưng với con mắt đức
tin, người ta mới tìm ra sự khôn ngoan vô cùng đã chứa sẵn trong cây
thập giá đó, giống như Biện Hòa đã tìm ra ngọc qúi trong viên đá tầm
thường đó.</span></p>

Không ai trong chúng ta lại chưa nghe bài ca dao về thằng Bờm! Ai
cũng cho thằng Bờm thuộc vào típ người khờ dại, nửa người nửa ngợm
nửa đười ươi. Đúng thế, chính tôi xưa nay vẫn hiểu như vậy vì ý
nghĩa của nó qúa rõ ràng: thằng Bờm chỉ có cái quạt mo thôi, thế mà
phú ông lần lượt đổi cho nó: ba bò chín trâu, ao sâu ca mè, một bè
gỗ lim, đôi chim đồi mồi, nhưng Bờm ta nhất định không đổi. Sau cùng
phú ông đổi cho nắm xôi, thì Bờm cười ưng thuận ngay!.</span></p>

Chúng ta thấy diễn tiến câu chuyện thật là chặt chẽ: phú ông thích
cái quạt mo của thằng Bờm quá, nên không ngần ngại đổi ngay cho nó
ba bò chín trâu, một cái gia giản quá lớn lao đối với thằng Bờm.
Nhưng lạ thay, thằng Bờm không thích, có lẽ to quá chăng? Phú ông
liền hạ xuống ao sâu cá mè. Bờm cũng không chịu. Phú ông hạ xuống
nữa, và sau cùng, ông tưởng là thằng Bờm này khờ dại nên thử đổi cho
nó nắm xôi xem sao. Đúng tủ, thằng Bờm cười khoái trá, nhận lấy. Mọi
người thấy thái độ của thằng Bờm đúng là thái độ của một đứa khùng,
tiền của nhiều không đổi, lại đi đổi lấy nắm xôi. Khờ ơi là khờ!</span></p>

với câu kết: phú ông xin đổi nắm xôi Bờm cười để kết luận rằng thằng
Bờm là thằng khờ, thì thiết tưởng người ta đã hiểu câu chuyện đó một
cách quá đơn giản, ý nghĩa quá nông cạn. Riêng tôi, sau khi đã suy
nghĩ về cách kết cấu của bài này, tôi thấy bài ca dao Thằng Bờm hàm
chứa cả một triết lý sâu sa về cuộc đời và một nền đạo đức căn bản
cho đời sống tu trì của chúng ta.</span></p>

Lúc này ông thấy thằng Bờm phe phẩy cái quạt mo ra vẻ ung dung, sung
sướng làm cho phú ông phát thèm. Phú ông là người chỉ biết có tiền,
có của, không biết niềm vui sướng thảnh thơi của thằng Bờm bởi đâu
mà đến, ông tưởng rằng sự vô tư thảnh thơi của nó ở trong cái quạt
nên ông mới đổi lấy để hòng có được lấy những phút thảnh thơi trong
đời.</span></p>

ta nhất định không đổi. Phú ông lại nghĩ: thằng này đúng là khờ rồi,
tại sao không đổi, ừ, ta hạ xuống xem sao, hạ xuống, hạ nữa, sau
cùng, mình đổi cho thằng khờ nắm xôi xem nó có đổi không! Đến đây ta
thấy thằng Bờm nó cười.</span></p>

“Bờm cười”. Hai tiếng kết thúc bài thơ này cần cho chúng ta suy
nghĩ. Bờm cười có nghĩa gì? Bờm ưng thuận hay Bờm từ chối? Đến đây
tôi cho rằng: thằng Bờm đã từ chối. Cái cười của thằng Bờm hàm chứa
một chút khinh bỉ đối với phú ông. Nó cho rằng: ông tưởng tôi là
thằng khờ, nhưng tôi đâu phải là thằng khờ! Ông đổi cho tôi ba bò
chín trâu, tôi còn chả lấy, lấy chi nắm xôi cho nó rẻ người ra. Sở
dĩ tôi không muốn đổi lấy cái tài sản to tát của ông là vì tôi không
muốn trở thành người giầu có bon chen như ông kẻo mất đi cái sự
thanh thản của tâm hồn. Tôi không muốn tiền bạc của cải chi phối
tôi, vì người ta thường nói: “Hoàng kim hắc nhân tâm” hay “Đồng tiền
đổi trắng thay đen lòng người”. Tiền của đâu có làm cho người ta
hạnh phúc.</span></p>

Trong phạm vi siêu nhiên, không phải ai cũng có thể trông thấy những
thực tại giống nhau, mà mỗi người thấy nhiều hay ít, rõ hay mờ, tùy
ở mức độ Chúa cho biết, mà Chúa thường tỏ lộ cho kẻ khiêm nhường bé
mọn: “Lạy Cha là Chúa trời đất, con xin ngợi khen Cha, vì Cha đã
giấu các điều ây cùng hạng người khôn ngoan thông thái, mà đã tỏ bầy
tỏ cho người bé mọn”(Mt 11,25;Lc 10,21). Ai được Chúa cho biết những
bí nhiệm Nước Trời, đó là người có phúc: “Phần các con, mắt các con
có phúc vì được thấy, tai các con có phúc vì được nghe. Quả thật
Thầy bảo các con: nhiều vị tiên tri, nhiều đấng công chính đã ao ước
đuợc thấy điều các con thấy, mà không được thấy, nghe điều các con
nghe, mà không được nghe”(Mt 13,16-17).</span></p>

Nghe lời khuyên này, chàng thanh niên tiu nghỉu, anh lặng lẽ bỏ ra
đi mà không bao giờ trở lại. Lời khuyên của Chúa khó nghe vì nó
không thích hợp với lối sống, với lối suy luận của con người xương
thịt, của những con người còn bị vật chất chi phối quá nhiều. Nếu
người ta lại phải nghe bài giảng Tám mối phúc thật ở trên núi (x.Mt
5,3-11) thì người ta có thể chấp nhận được không? Chắc người ta sẽ
cho là lời nói chói tai, không thể chấp nhận được. Nhưng chỉ những
người nào đuợc ơn hiểu thì mới có thể hiểu được.</span></p>

Chúng ta đi tu, người ta nhìn người tu sĩ với con mắt ngỡ ngàng, khó
hiểu. Người ta thắc mắc: tại sao những người này lại đi tu? Tại sao
họ lại bỏ cả mọi sự đời mà chấp nhận một đời sống khắc khổ như vậy?
Tại sao họ lại đi tu dòng Mến Thánh Giá, lý do nào thúc đẩy họ làm
như thế? Phải chăng họ là những người khờ, NHỮNG NGƯỜI ĐIÊN, phải
chăng đây là hiện thân của những thằng Bờm trong thời đại nguyên tử
và phi thuyền này? Họ còn đặt nhiều câu hỏi mà không có câu trả lời,
vì họ không có con mắt đức tin để hiểu được những thực tại siêu
nhiên. Chúng ta nhận mình là những thằng Bờm, nhưng là những thằng
Bờm khôn ngoan, đó là bỏ đi tất cả để được tất cả: “Kẻ nào muốn cứu
lấy mạng sống mình, thì sẽ mất, còn kẻ nào đành mất mạng sống mình
vì Ta, thì sẽ được sống” (Mt 16, 25).</span></p>

Thánh Augustinô nói: “Yêu ai thì nên giống ngưới ấy”. Chúng ta yêu
mến Chúa Giêsu thì chúng ta cũng phải trở nên giống Người, phải trở
nên đồng hình đồng dạng với Người. Chúa Giêsu đã được tiên tri Isaia
mô tả là một tên tôi tớ rốt hèn, chịu đau thương (x. Is chương 53).
Thánh Tông đồ dân ngoại lại mô tả: “Đức Giêsu Kitô vốn là Thiên Chúa
mà không nghĩ phải nhất quyết duy trì địa vị ngang hàng Thiên Chúa,
nhưng đã hoàn toàn trút bỏ vinh quang, mặc lấy thân nô lệ, trở nên
giống phàm nhân, sống như người trần thế. Người lại còn hạ mình,
vâng lời cho đến nỗi bằng lòng chịu chết, chết trên cây thập tự” (Pl
2,6-8).</span></p>

Một hôm người cha nói với cô: “Con ơi, nhiều ngày cha vác những bao
than nặng nề trên vai, trèo lên những nhà cao năm, sáu tầng, vai cha
tê cứng, và cha tưởng nhở đến Chúa Giêsu cũng chịu khốn khổ trên vai
vì cây thánh giá quá nặng mà Người phải vác. Cha liền dâng lên cho
Chúa những sự cực khổ của cha để xin cho con cái cha được theo Chúa
giữ đạo cho sốt sắng. Này con, có phải mang thánh giá vàng đeo vào
cổ là đủ đâu? Có phải đó là trọn lời Chúa đã khuyên: “Hãy vác thập

Đến đây, cô con gái mới sực tỉnh về thái độ vô ý thức của mình và
mới hiểu lời khuyên bảo của người cha.. Từ đấy cô đã sửa đổi được
cuộc sống, cô bán tượng thánh giá vàng đi, phân phát cho kẻ khó và
chỉ đeo tượng thánh giá thường thôi, không phải đeo để trang hoàng,
nhưng đeo để nhắc nhở cô luôn biết theo Chúa, vác thánh giá Chúa
hằng ngày bằng cách chấp nhận cuộc sống với bao hy sinh, bao đau khổ
và nhẫn nhục chịu đựng mọi trái ý hằng ngày, có ý kết hợp vào sự
thương khó của Chúa trong việc cứu rỗi các linh hồn.</span></p>

Người dân Việt nam luôn có đầu óc sùng kính những gì đáng cho là
sùng kính. Từ tên cha mẹ, ông bà cho đến một ông vua, thời quân chủ,
không bao giờ họ dám gọi tên thật. Họ lấy tên người con trưởng để
gọi thế tên cha, hay nói chại cái tên đi, ví dụ: nếu tên Cảnh thì
gọi là Kiểng. Nhiều ông đồ, vì tính gàn cứ dùng tên húy của vua, của
bà con dòng họ vua, là bị đạp vỏ chuối ngay. Có khi còn bị ăn cơm
vắt phèn. Đó là cái tên gọi. Còn chữ viết, Các người theo đạo Khổng
Mạnh hay Phật giáo, ho qúi trọng đạo cho đến chữ viết cũng qúi. Đi
giữa đường, gặp tờ giấy chữ nho, hay một trang kinh sách chữ nho, họ
liền cúi xuống, kính cẩn nhặt bỏ túi đem về đốt. Lòng sùng kính chân
thật của họ được biểu lộ dưới nhiều hình thức. Tất cả những hình
thức ngay thẳng, chân thành đều đáng cho ta lưu ý.</span></p>

Ngày xưa Chúa đã vác thánh giá lên núi Sọ, con đường lên núi Sọ dài

thánh giá. Nhưng ngày nay, Người vẫn còn tiếp tục vác thánh giá mà

Ngày nay được dùng theo ý nghĩa phổ thông, từ ngữ “THẬP GIÁ” đã mất
đi phần nào ý nghĩa nguyên ngữ của nó. Một ít khổ đau, bất hạnh, thử
thách đều có thể là một thánh giá. Khi nói rằng ai không vác thập
giá thì không xứng đáng làm môn đệ Người, Chúa Giêsu muốn chỉ đến
một hành động quyết liệt dứt khoát hơn. Hẳn Người đang nghĩ đến các
hình ảnh khủng khiếp của những hình khổ lúc bấy giờ. Người La mã
thường dùng thập giá như một khổ hình. Người Palestine đã quá quen
thuộc từng đoàn người vác thập giá của mình đến nơi họ sẽ bị treo
lên. Thập giá có nghĩa là người vác nó đã bị kết án vào một cái chết
nhục nhã. Vác sự nhục nhã đi qua giữa đô thị là một lời cảnh cáo cho
dân chúng.</span></p>

Chúa Giêsu dùng hình ảnh này để nói lên những gì mà bản tính nhân
loại của chúng ta sẽ gặp phải. Về sau, hình ảnh này đã mang lấy ý
nghĩa cao đẹp khi trở thành biểu trưng của sự Cứu rỗi. Người Kitô
hữu, nhất là người tu sĩ, một khi đã chọn Chúa, phải từ bỏ mình.
Phải đi qua cuộc sống như một người đặc biệt, làm đối tượng cho sự
nhạo báng, thù ghét của người trần gian. Chúa Giêsu muốn làm nổi bật
tương phản giữa người Kitô hữu và trần gian, người Kitô hữu là người

Vác thánh giá là một hình khổ. Hình khổ dĩ nhiên sẽ tạo nên đau khổ.
Đau khổ lại man vàn trong đời sống hằng ngày. Thi hào DANTE đã gọi
là “Terra lacrymosa” (qủa đất đẫm lệ). Thánh vịnh lại gọi quả đất là
thung lũng nước mắt (Tv 79,83). Sách Khôn ngon nói: “Như tất cả mọi
người trên trần, tôi đã cất tiếng kêu đầu tiên pha hoà trong nước
mắt” (Kn 7,3). Ý tưởng sách Khôn ngoan rất phù hơp với câu tục ngữ
Việt nam: “Cất tiếng khóc chào đời”. Người ta không chào đời bằng
tiếng cười mà lại bằng tiếng khóc. Thi sĩ Nguyễn gia Thiều đã nói:</span></p>

Khổng giáo chuẩn bị Kitô giáo bằng cái nhìn sâu sắc về đau khổ, xem
như phương thế hữu hiệu để hoàn bị hóa con người. Đức Khổng Thử nói:
“Khi Trời muốn trao cho ai một sứ mạng cao cả, trước hết Ngài đổ cay
đắng vào tâm hồn họ, làm gân cốt họ ra suy nhược, buộc cơ thể họ
phải nếm mùi đói khát, đưa họ đến chỗ tận cùng của đau khổ, cản trở
và lật đổ những gì họ xây đắp. Có như vậy mới làm sống lại trong con
người những tâm tình tốt đẹp, củng cố đức kiên nhẫn và mang lại cho
con người những gì còn thiều sót”.</span></p>

Thì luân lý Tin Mừng cũng tuyên bố: “Nếu hạt giống không chết đi,

toàn”. Vì rằng, sự đổi mới của Chúa Giêsu không làm đảolộn đời sống
con người., không hủy bỏ đau khổ và sự chết, nhưng mặc cho đau khổ
cái công dụng giúp con người và vũ trụ tân tiến. Nếu ta theo ý định
của Chúa, nhận sự đau khổ và sự chết trong đức vâng lời. và vì lòng
mến Chúa và thương yêu anh em, thì đau khổ và sự chết hóa nên con
đường độc nhất đưa đến sự sống lại vinh hiển, vĩnh viễn cho ta và
cho cả vạn vật.</span></p>

Ta nghĩ thế nào về hạt cát? Hạt cát có lợi hay có hại cho ta.? Phải
chấp nhận nó hay phủi nó đi? Nếu hạt cát rơi vào mắt ta, chắc chắn
ta phải tìm cách phủi đi ngay vì nó chỉ làm ta đau khổ. Nhưng nếu
hạt cát đó lại rơi vào miệng con sò thì sao? Con sò sẽ tiết ra một
chất nhờn bao bọc lấy hạt cát và sẽ biến nó thành hạt ngọc. Vì thế,
người ta thường tìm sò hến để kiếm ngọc.</span></p>

Người ta kể sự cấu tạo ngọc trai như sau: khi một vật lạ, chẳng hạn
như hạt cát, rơi vào cơ thể tức phần ruột trong vỏ con trai, vào
ngay giữa lớp nhuyễn mạc của phần vỏ ngoài con trai. Sau đó nhuyễn
mạc sẽ cong lên và tạo thành một cái túi, hạt cát lọt vào trong túi
ấy, việc nhuyễn mạc cong lên này cốt chỉ để ngăn chặn sự cọ sát có
thể làm trai đau đớn. Dần dần nhuyễn mạc nhả vào trong túi càng ngày
càng nhiều để tránh sự đau đớn, nhuyễn mạc bao quanh hạt cát và vô
tình tạo thành ngọc cho loài người. Việc cấu tạo thành ngọc trai có
thể xẩy ra từ ba, bốn, năm năm là viên ngọc đã tròn và sáng. Ngọc để
lâu trong con trai càng lâu càng chắc và đẹp. Tuy nhiên trong khoảng
thời gian đó một dòng nước có mang những vi sinh vật làm hại trai,
có thể đến với những con trai có mang ngọc, lúc ấy viên ngọc sẽ chết
và không còn giá trị.</span></p>

Chúng ta hãy dùng cây thánh giá để được sức mạnh can đảm mà chịu
đựng, mà chấp nhận cảnh sống hiện tại với bao hy sinh đau khổ. Hãy
qúi mến thánh giá như gương của tướng Carreau. Người ta kể rằng:
tướng Carreau bị tử thương. Sau khi được chịu các phép sau hết, ông
cầm cây thánh giá mà vợ ông đã đeo vào cổ ông, rồi nói với các bạn:
“Các bạn hãy can đảm lên. Giữa các sự cực nhọc và đau khổ của các
bạn, đừng quên rằng cuộc đời là vắn vỏi, và ta thật vô phúc nếu sau

Chị em hãnh diện vì mình được mang tên là dòng Mến Thánh giá. Phải
mến Thánh giá thực sự. Muốn không chưa đủ, phải yêu nữa. Vì nếu chỉ
mến thôi, người ta còn ở xa, “kính nhi viễn chi”, người ta suy phục
nhưng có thể chưa hy sinh cho người mình mến. Nhưng nếu yêu ai thì
tình yêu ấy có thể thúc đẩy nguời ta hy sinh cho người mình yêu:
“Không có tình yêu nào cao trọng cho bằng chết vì người mình yêu”.
Dòng Mến Thánh Giá! Dòng mang tên thập đẹp mà nếu trong đời sống
hằng ngày mà không thực yêu thánh giá thì phải gọi là “DÒNG KHIẾP
THÁNH GIÁ”, hay còn tệ hơn nữa là “DÒNG GHÉT THÁNH GIÁ”.</span></p>

Hôm nay lễ kính Thánh giá Chúa, quan thầy của dòng chị em, chúng ta
hãy cầu nguyện cho nhau để thực sự có lòng yêu mến thánh giá Chúa,
tìm thấy sự khôn ngoan trong thánh giá, sự khôn ngoan đã bị che
khuất mắt những người thông thái thế gian, để chúng ta không còn mặc
cảm mình là những kẻ khờ, người điên. Cho dù bị gọi là người điên
trước mặt người ta nhưng trước mặt Chúa là những người khôn ngoan.
Hãy suy niệm lời thánh Phaolô để yên ủi mình: “Nếu ta đã chết với
Đức Kitô, ta tin tưởng cũng sẽ được cùng sống với Người” (Rm 6,8).</span></p>
