line-height:107%"> Lòng mến mộ và tôn kính Thánh Giá đã có từ lâu đời trong Kitô
Giáo. Cụ thể, khi đề cập đến Giáo hội từ thời sơ khởi, vào thế kỷ
đầu của ngàn năm thứ nhất, nhiều chuyên gia về giáo sử, đặc biệt như
Giáo phụ Tertuliano, đều cho biết: “Bất kỳ làm một việc gì có ý
nghĩa, người Kitô hữu đều làm dấu Thánh Giá”. Thậm chí người Kitô
hữu có thói quen làm dấu Thánh Giá trên người và vật như dấu chỉ sự
chúc lành. Nhưng, phải đến thế kỷ thứ 4 trở đi mới có ngày lễ dành
để tôn vinh Thánh Giá.</span></span></p>

line-height:107%"> Đầu tiên, khi tìm được di tích Thánh Giá vào năm 326, bà
Helena cho xây cất hai đền thờ, một tại núi Calvario và một tại Mộ
Thánh ở Thánh Địa. Lễ khánh thành và cung hiến hai đền thờ này được
tổ chức trọng thể tại Giêrusalem vào hai ngày 13 và 14 tháng 9 để
mừng Đền thờ Calvario và Mộ Thánh. Năm 335, ngày 14 tháng 9 cũng
mừng kính ngày tìm được Thánh Giá thực vào 14 tháng 9 năm 326. Vì gỗ
Thánh Giá thực rất quý, nên được phân ra nhiều phần rất nhỏ, chia
cho các Giáo hội tại mỗi nơi. Thành Constantinopoli được phần Gỗ
Thánh lớn hơn và phần còn lại được lưu niệm tại Giêrusalem. Từ đó, ở
Giêrusalem lễ tìm được Thánh Giá mừng kính trọng thể vào ngày 14
tháng 9.</span></span></p>

Thế kỷ thứ 6, khi giặc giã nổi lên, vua Ba Tư Khosroès 1 (531–579),
đem quân đến Cận Đông và đánh thắng quân của đế quốc Roma ở Phương
Đông, chiếm đóng và tàn phá Thánh Địa, rồi cướp luôn cả Thánh Giá
thực ở Giêrusalem. May thay, lúc ấy có ông Heraclius (575–641), vị
tướng tài giỏi mới 35 tuổi, con của tổng trấn thành Carthage, đã lật
đổ bạo chúa Phocas, rồi lên nắm quyền ở Constantinopoli ngày
3/10/610, và làm hoàng đế Byzantin, lấy hiệu là vua Heraclius 1
(610–641). Ông đã anh dũng điều khiển trận đánh và chiến thắng đầu
tiên ngày 12/12/627. Ông rượt đuổi vua Khosroès 1 đến Ctésiphon, và
tại đây, con trai của Khosroès là Siroes Shirva đã giết cha và giao
nộp Thánh Giá thực lại cho vua Heraclius 1.</span></p>

14.0pt;line-height:107%">Năm 629, Thánh Giá được kiệu về Constantinopoli, rồi từ
đó rước khải hoàn về Giêrusalem. Vua Heraclius muốn vác Thập Giá vào
đền thờ để tạ ơn Chúa. Ông mặc vương phục và đội mũ hoàng đế. Nhưng
khi vác Thánh Giá lên vai, ông thấy quá nặng. Tức thì, Đức
Zacharias, Giáo chủ Giêrusalem, liền nói với vua: “Xin hoàng đế thận
trọng, vì với mũ miện và y phục vương quyền mà ngài đang mặc, ngài
không hợp để vác Thập Giá giống như thân phận khó nghèo, khiêm tốn
của Chúa Giêsu Kitô”.</span></span></p>

Nhà vua nghe theo lời Đức Giáo chủ, bỏ hết mũ miện, vương phục. Tức
thì gỗ Thập Giá trở nên nhẹ nhàng và Heraclius 1 vác Thập giá gỗ vào
đền thờ. Với gỗ Thập Giá Thánh, Thiên Chúa còn ban nhiều phép lạ,
trong số có một người chết được sống lại; bốn người bất toại được
lành bệnh; mười người phong cùi được trở nên sạch sẽ, bình phục;
mười lăm người mù được sáng mắt; vô số người bị quỷ ám được giải
