Thập giá nắm giữ vai trò nào trong cuộc sống mỗi người chúng ta?</p>

Chúng ta thường thấy: nơi ơi bản thân, Thập giá được dùng làm đồ trang
sức chúng ta đeo trên tai, trên cổ. Trong mỗi gia đình đều có một bàn
thờ. Và trên bàn thờ ấy, chính giữa thường là cây thập giá, vì đó là vị
trí chúng ta lấy làm ưng ý nhất. Tại giáo xứ, chúng ta nhìn thấy thập
giá trên tháp chuông, trên cung thánh hay trên những phần mộ.</p>

Thập giá đã quá quen thuộc với chúng ta ngày từ hồi còn tấm bé. Chúng ta
không thể diễn tả niềm tin Kitô giáo mà không cần đến cây Thập giá. Thế
nhưng, còn trong cuộc sống thì sao?</p>

Phải thành thật mà nói: nhiều khi Thập giá đã làm cho chúng ta run sợ và
chúng ta đã tìm mọi cách để lẩn tránh. Thập giá dường như đã trở nên một
cái gì thù địch, trái ngược với bản tính và niềm hạnh phúc của chúng ta.</p>

Thế nhưng, kinh nghiệm cho thấy: chúng ta không thể nào lẩn tránh khỏi
Thập giá, bởi vì Thập giá là một cái gì nằm sẵn trong thân phận con
người. Sự chọn lựa của chúng ta không phải là có hay không có Thập giá,
nhưng là có biết vác Thập giá mình cho nên hay không mà thôi. Bởi vì
Thập giá sẽ đem lại nhiều lợi ích nếu chúng ta biết vác lấy vì lòng yêu
mến Chúa.</p>

Thực vậy, đứng trước thập giá, Chúa Giêsu đã có một thái độ hoàn toàn
khác biệt với chúng ta. Phúc âm kể lại rằng:</p>

Bấy giờ Chúa Giêsu và các môn đệ đang ở Giêricô, cách thủ đô Giêrusalem
khoảng bốn mươi cây số, mà ngày lễ Vượt qua thì lại sắp tới, từng đoàn
người hành hương hát vang những câu thánh vịnh. Và rồi một lần nữa Chúa
Giêsu nói trước cho các ông về cuộc tử nạn của Ngài:</p>

– Này Ta lên Giêrusalem, Con người sẽ bị nộp trong tay kẻ ngoại. Họ sẽ
khạc nhổ, đánh đòn và sẽ giết chết Ngài.</p>

Các môn đệ không muốn tin vào điều ấy. Lên Giêrusalem giữa một tình hình
căng thẳng như lúc này, thì quả là một việc điên khùng và dại dột, nếu
không muốn nói đó là một hành động tự sát, bởi vì đã từ lâu, bọn biệt
phái và luật sĩ tại đó đã quyết định giết Chúa Giêsu.</p>

Thế nhưng, các ông lại không đủ can đảm can ngăn Chúa Giêsu, bởi vì đã
một lần Phêrô lên tiếng:</p>

– Ước gì Thày không phải như vậy đâu.</p>

Và ông đã bị Ngài quở trách nặng lời:</p>

– Hỡi Satan hãy xéo đi, vì ngươi chỉ biết những việc thuộc về thế gian,
mà chẳng biết chi đến những việc thuộc về Thiên Chúa.</p>

Chúa Giêsu đã nhìn thấy trước những khổ đau và cái chết nhục nhã Ngài sẽ
phải chịu, thế mà Ngài vẫn cương quyết đi lên Giêrusalem.</p>

Cuộc hành trình đi lên Giêrusalem phải chăng chính là hình ảnh cuộc đời
chúng ta. Còn thái độ của các môn đệ, phải chăng cũng chính là thái độ
của chúng ta.</p>

Thực vậy, cuộc đời chúng ta thì chất đầy những khổ đau và lo lắng: nào
đau ốm bệnh tật, nào hận thù chiến tranh, nào nghèo túng khổ cực… Chúng
ta cảm thấy như bất lực, không thể nào giải quyết được. Trong khi đó,
Chúa Giêsu đã can đảm bước đi và Ngài đã bước đi cho tới cùng, bởi vì
sau thập giá sẽ là vinh quang phục sinh.</p>

Có hai bà già mắc bệnh lao, nằm bên cạnh nhau trong một căn phòng bệnh
viện. Họ biết rằng cơn bệnh của họ không còn phương cách nào cứu chữa,
chỉ còn chờ ngày được nghỉ yên dưới lòng đất lạnh mà thôi.</p>

Một bà thì cô độc, chỉ có một mình, bởi vì gia đình và những người thân
đều đã chết vì trúng đạn pháo kích. Còn bà kia thì đã có chồng, nhưng
ông chồng này đã bỏ bà từ lâu và hiện đang sống với người vợ lẽ. Bà biết
rõ điều ấy.</p>

Trước những nỗi đớn đau và bất hạnh như thế, mọi lời an ủi và khích lệ
dường như đã trở nên thừa thải, nếu không muốn nói là đã trở nên lẩm cẩm
và ngu ngốc. Thế nhưng, mỗi lần viếng thăm, tôi đều thấy hai bà cầm cây
Thánh giá và nói với tôi:</p>

– Cuối cùng chỉ còn lại cây Thập giá. Bởi vì chính tại Thập giá, Chúa
Giêsu đã đau khổ trước chúng tôi và hơn chúng tôi bội phần. Cây Thập giá
của Chúa đã nói với chúng tôi nhiều điều và đã đem lại cho chúng tôi
niềm an ủi tuyệt vời nhất giữa những đắng cay chua xót của cuộc đời.</p>

Hôm nay, chúng ta không phải chỉ suy tôn Thánh giá trong lời kinh tiếng
hát hay trong những nghi thức phụng vụ, mà còn phải biết suy tôn Thánh
gía trong chính cuộc sống chúng ta, bằng cách chấp nhận những hy sinh
gian khổ mà chúng ta gặp phải vì lòng yêu mến Chúa, bởi vì đó chính là
cây thập giá đời thường Ngài muốn chúng ta vác lấy để bước theo Ngài.</p>

Bên trên những gai nhọn là cánh hồng nở thắm. Bên trên thập giá đời đời
thường là vinh quang phục sinh chờ đón.</p>
