Tôi không rõ việc sùng kính thập giá Đức Kitô khởi sự từ đâu và vào thời
gian nào, nhưng chắc chắn việc đó phải có từ thời hoàng đế Constantin,
hay nói rõ hơn từ năm 335 là năm mà truyền thuyết cho rằng đã tìm lại
được thập giá Đức Kitô; và nhân biến cố đó, hoàng đế đã cho xây một
thánh đường ngay chính nơi mộ Đức Kitô, ngày lễ Suy Tôn Thánh Giá 14
tháng 9 là để kỷ niệm ngày cung hiến ngôi thánh đường này.</p>

Như vậy, việc sùng kính thập giá quả đã có từ lâu đời, nhưng cũng không
phải là một truyền thống có từ ban đầu. Vậy thì từ ban đầu thập giá có ý
nghĩa gì?</p>

Tôi xin thưa, ngay từ ban đầu thập giá đã là dấu chỉ của hồng ân cứu độ:</p>

– Như Maisen treo con rắn nơi hoang địa thế nào, thì Con Người cũng sẽ
bị treo lên như vậy, để những ai tin vào Ngài thì được sống đời đời.</p>

Đồng thời thập giá còn là dấu chỉ của một tình yêu to lớn mà Thiên Chúa
đã dành cho nhân loại:</p>

– Không ai yêu hơn người hiến mạng sống mình vì bạn hữu.</p>

Cũng như thập giá là dấu chỉ của người môn đệ Chúa:</p>

– Ai muốn theo Ta phải từ bỏ mình, vác thập giá mình hằng ngày mà theo
Ta.</p>

Đối với người môn đệ Đức Kitô thì không có gì là vinh dự ngoài thập giá,
bởi vì nhờ thập giá mà chúng ta được giải thoát, được cứu độ. Nhưng vinh
dự vì thập giá nghĩa là gì? Phải chăng, là vì chúng ta có thập giá như
là một kỷ vật châu báu, quí giá hơn vàng bạc. Nếu thế thì chẳng lẽ Đức
Kitô lại làm giàu cho chúng ta với cây thập giá của Ngài sao?</p>

Hẳn là không. Nhưng phải nhìn nhận rằng, chúng ta nhiều khi đã lợi dụng
thập giá Chúa để làm giàu. Thánh giá trở nên một đồ vật cho người ta
buôn bán: Nào thánh giá vàng, thánh giá bạc và như thế thánh giá trở
thành phương tiện để người ta khoe khoang, vinh dự khi ấy không còn là
vinh dự được Đức Kitô cứu chuộc bằng giá máu của Ngài. Làm như thế thánh
giá trở nên một đồ vật quí giá chứ không phải là một kỷ vật nhắc nhở cái
chết của Chúa. Và kẻ đeo thánh giá đó không cần phải tin Đức Kitô, lại
càng không thể làm môn đệ của Ngài vì người môn đệ chân chính của Ngài
là phải luôn vác thập giá trên vai, và nhất là phải chịu đóng đinh vào
đó vì yêu thương và yêu thương cho đến cùng.</p>

Đã hơn hai ngàn năm nay, người ta đã tạo ra biết bao kiểu thánh giá, to
có nhỏ có và thánh giá đã có mặt ở khắp mọi nơi, nhưng càng ngày càng ít
người chịu vác thánh giá trên vai và càng ít người hơn nữa chịu đóng
đinh vào đó. Đáng buồn nhất là có những kẻ không ngần ngại đóng đinh
người khác hay bắt kẻ khác vác những thánh giá nặng nề, đang khi chính
mình vẫn đưa miệng hôn kính thánh giá.</p>

Đức Kitô mời gọi chúng ta tình nguyện vác thập giá đi theo Ngài, nhưng
chính Ngài cũng vác thập giá của mình mà đi trước chúng ta. Không bao
giờ Ngài chất thập giá trên vai kẻ khác. Còn chúng ta, nhiều khi đã
không chịu vác thập giá của mình thì chớ, mà lại còn chồng chất trên vai
những người nghèo khổ và bé mọn, những người mà bình thường thập giá của
họ đã nặng nề, mà không một ai giúp đỡ như Simong, mà không ai lau mặt
cho như Veronica thuở trước.</p>

Nay đã đến lúc phải đặt thập giá vào đúng vị trí của nó, nghĩa là trên
vai mỗi người chúng ta. Bởi đó, việc hôn kính thánh giá không quan trọng
bằng việc vác thập giá, và việc suy tôn thánh giá cũng chẳng lợi ích gì
nếu không sẵn sàng chịu đóng đinh mình vào thập giá.</p>
