thờ Latêranô là nhà thờ chánh toà của Đức Giáo Hoàng. Đức Thánh Cha với tư cách
là Giám Mục Roma, cũng đặt ngai tòa của mình tại nhà thờ chánh tòa. Đền thờ này
được xây dựng vào năm 320 khi Giáo Hội Chúa Kitô, tượng trưng cho Tòa Thánh Roma
vừa thoát qua khỏi một thời kỳ cấm cách, bắt bớ khủng khiếp. Đền thờ này do công
của Hoàng đế Constantinô xây dựng để tôn vinh danh Chúa và để dân Chúa có nơi tụ
tập, đọc kinh cầu nguyện và lãnh nhận các bí tích. Đền thờ này đã được cung hiến
vào khoảng thời gian nói trên.Lịch sử thuật lại rằng khi hoàn tất ngôi thánh
đường này, nhiều đoàn người khắp trong thành phố Roma đã tuôn đến để dự lễ khánh
thành và hiệp ý trong nghi lễ cung hiến ngôi thánh đường dùng đặt ngai tòa của
Đức giáo hoàng, với tư cách là Giám Mục Roma. Ngôi đền thờ Latêranô đã trải qua
biết bao nhiêu biến cố, biết bao nhiêu thăng trầm của đạo giáo, biết bao nhiêu
thử thách, khó khăn của các thời Hoàng đế Roma trị vì. Biết bao nhiêu người đã
tới thánh đường Latêranô để xin rửa tội, gia nhập dân thánh Chúa trong những đêm
phục sinh và mừng lễ vượt qua tại đây.</span></p>

nay, đền thờ Latêranô vẫn vút cao, vẫn đứng sững như muốn nói với mọi người
Thiên Chúa luôn yêu thương dân người. Ngày nay, vẫn có đoàn đoàn lớp người tới
dự thánh lễ và lãnh nhận các bí tích. Hàng năm, ngày thứ năm tuần thánh Đức
Thánh Cha vẫn tới cử hành lễ với hàng linh mục Roma, với các Hồng y, Giám mục và
Ngài diễn tả lại hành động, cử chỉ của Chúa Giêsu xưa nơi nhà tiệc ly là rửa
chân cho các tông đồ.</span></p>

dùng một nơi đặc biệt để cầu nguyện và thờ phượng đã có từ rất xa xưa. Tuy
nhiên, mãi khoảng năm 1000 trước Công nguyên ngôi đền thờ đầu tiên mới được vua
Solomon xây dựng tại Giêrusalem để dành riêng cho Thiên Chúa, công trình này mất
khoảng bảy năm rưỡi, lễ cung hiến đền thờ kéo dài tám ngày, và hằng năm được
người Do Thái nhớ lại.</span></p>

những thế kỷ đầu của Kitô giáo, Giáo hội bị bách hại không thể xây dựng đền thờ,
buộc phải cử hành các mầu nhiệm của Thiên Chúa tại nhà riêng hoặc trong các hầm
mộ, hay trên các ngôi mộ của các vị tử đạo.</span></p>

313 sau khi hoàng đế Constantinô ban hành đạo luật cho phép các kitô hữu tự do
hành đạo, đền thờ đầu tiên được cất. Hoàng đế đã nhượng cho Đức Giáo hoàng
Melchiade khu đất của dòng họ Laterani, và truyền xây đền thờ. Năm 324 thánh
Giáo hoàng Silvestro cử hành lễ cung hiến đền thờ mang tước hiệu kính Chúa Cứu
thế này, và chỉ từ sau thế kỷ VI mới thêm các tước hiệu hai thánh Gioan Tiền hô
và Gioan thánh sử, từ đó được gọi là đền thánh Gioan Lateranô. Sau đó vào năm
334 Constantinô cho xây một giếng rửa tội nơi mà thánh Giáo hoàng Silvestro rửa
tội cho ông, một dinh giáo chủ, nơi các giáo hoàng cư ngụ cho đến khi di chuyển
sang Avignon. Đền thờ Lateranô hôm nay chúng ta mừng kỷ niệm ngày cung hiến được
mệnh danh là “mẹ của tất cả các đền thờ ở Rôma và trên toàn thế giới”.</span></p>

lòng thế giới, trước cái nhìn của Thiên Chúa và loài người, trong một hành vi
đức tin khiêm tốn và vui mừng, con người với khả năng trí tuệ khôn lường Chúa
ban là những kiến trúc sư, thợ mộc, thợ nề, nghệ nhân ưu tú, kiến thiết công
trình nghệ thuật đã dùng những tài nguyên thiên nhiên như phiến đá, cây gỗ, đất
cát, xây dựng lên một khối lượng vật chất là đền thờ. Đây là một dấu chỉ hữu
hình về Thiên Chúa vô hình, Đấng là Ánh sáng, là chiều cao cả và là chính vẻ
đẹp.</span></p>

bối cảnh ấy, vị kiến trúc sư đã nối kết thực tại thế giới và lịch sử cứu độ. Ông

Salomon đã xây cho minh một ngôi đền bằng đá và gỗ vì ông là một tiên tri, … Còn
Thiên Chúa hằng sống Đấng dựng nên cả đất trời, ngự trên chín tầng trời… Tại
sao Thiên Chúa lại đòi xây dựng một đền thờ? Phải chăng Ngài bị tước mất chỗ
ngự? Hãy nghe lời Stêphanô lên tiếng trước Công nghị, trước lúc chịu khổ hình:
“Còn Salômôn, đã xây nhà cho Người. Nhưng Ðấng Tối Cao hẳn không phải ngụ nhờ
trong những vật tay phàm làm ra, như tiên tri đã nói” (Ac 7,47- 48). Vì thế từ
đó đền thờ được xây để tiên báo thân thể Đức Kitô. Đền thờ đầu tiên chỉ là
“bóng” của các điều sẽ đến; còn với Ðức Kitô mới có “mình”. (Col 2,17): khi ánh
sáng xuất hiện, bóng tối sẽ rút lui. Hiện nay chúng ta tìm kiếm đến thờ do vua
Salomon xây ư? Chỉ còn một đống đổ nát. Tại sao nó bị đổ nát? Thưa là vì thực
tại mà ông loan báo đã hoàn thành. Đền thờ đích thực là chính thân mình Chúa
Kitô, cũng bị đổ vỡ, nhưng Người đã trỗi dậy, và sẽ không bao giờ đổ nát

thân xác chúng ta thì sao? Là chi thể của thân mình Đức Kitô. Thánh Phaolô nói:
“Anh em không biết sao? thân xác anh em là những chi thể của Ðức Kitô!” (1Cr
6,15). Khi nói:“Thân xác anh em là những chi thể của Ðức Kitô” nghĩa là thân xác
chúng ta liên kết với đầu là Đức Kitô “Ngài là đầu của Thân mình” (x. Cl 1, 18),
làm thành một đền thờ duy nhất, đền thờ Thiên Chúa.</span></p>

với thân mình Đức Kitô, thân xác chúng ta là đền thờ đích thực và sống động của
Thiên Chúa. Trước khi được thanh tẩy, chúng ta là miếu thờ ma quỷ, nhưng sau khi
được thanh tẩy, chúng ta thành đền thờ của Đức Ki-tô. Thiên Chúa không chỉ ngự
trong những đền do tay con người làm ra, cũng không chỉ ngự trong những ngôi đền
bằng gỗ bằng đá, nhưng đặc biệt Người ngự trong linh hồn đã được dựng nên giống
hình ảnh Người và do chính tay Người xây lên: Vì thế, thánh Phaolô đã nói: “Anh
em không biết anh em là đền thờ của Thiên Chúa và Thánh Thần Thiên Chúa ngự
trong anh em sao? Vì đền thờ của Thiên Chúa là thánh mà chính anh em là đền thờ
ấy” (1 Cr 3,16-17).</span></p>

Thánh Gia Nazareth khi xưa, hoàn cảnh sống ngày nay đã biến đổi sâu xa và người
ta đã đạt được những tiến bộ rất lớn trong các lãnh vực kỹ thuật, xã hội và văn
hóa. Chúng ta không thể hài lòng với những tiến bộ ấy. Chúng ta còn phải luôn
nghĩ đến những tiến bộ về luân lý, như sự quan tâm, bảo vệ và giúp đỡ gia đình,
vì tình yêu quảng đại và không thể phân ly giữa một người nam và một người nữ là
khung cảnh hữu hiệu và là nền tảng sự sống con người trong khi được cưu mang,
sinh ra, lớn lên và kết thúc tự nhiên. Nơi nào có tình thương và lòng chung
