Salzhenisyn kể lại câu chuyện của một nhà ngoại giao tên Innokenty. Trong
suốt thời kỳ Staline cầm quyền, Innokenty và vợ ông, Dottie, sống một cuộc
sống được ưu đãi. Ở mỗi nhiệm sở ông được gởi đến, một căn nhà đầy đủ những
đồ dùng hoang phí đang chờ đợi họ. Và họ xum xoe thoả mãn. Họ có mọi thứ họ
muốn, và vào một thời kỳ mà Thế Chiến II tàn phá khắp nơi. Nhưng không có
một tiếng thở dài lo âu nào của thế giới làm động lòng họ.</span></p>

cuộc hôn nhân của họ, Innokenty bắt đầu có cảm giác bất ổn về mọi vật chất.

gì đó. Cả người vợ yêu quý Dottie cũng trở thành một người xa lạ với ông.
Cách sống xu thời làm ông lúng túng. Ở đâu, người ta cũng giống nhau và ở

ông thức tỉnh. Trong các bức thư của bà, bà nói về những điều như lòng

lùng này: “Điều quý giá nhất trong thế giới này là luôn ý thức rằng mình
không được dự phần vào sự bất công”.</span></p>

sống ông còn thiếu. Và trong nhiều ngày đêm, ông đã tiếp tục ngồi đó để hít
thở những giá trị của thế giới mẹ ông như một người hít thở không khí trong
lành. Ông khám phá một phương thế mới để nhìn và phán đoán đời sống. Cho tới
lúc đó, triết lý sống của ông là chúng ta chỉ sống có một lần. Đem chính
mình để phục vụ người khác là hoàn toàn điên rồ. Giờ đây, ông hiểu rõ một sự
thật khác: chúng ta chỉ có một lương tâm và nếu lương tâm trở nên què quặt
thì đời sống coi như đánh mất không gì bù đắp lại.</span></p>

người điều trị căn bệnh cho bà trước khi bà mất. Một ngày kia, ông này sắp
lên đường sang Pari nơi đó ông định trao cho Phương Tây một số bí mật về y
khoa bởi vì ông cho rằng thế giới có quyền biết những bí mật ấy. Nhưng một
cái bẫy đã được giăng ra để bắt ông bác sĩ. Innokenty biết được điều đó. Ông
tìm cách gọi điện cho ông bác sĩ. Nhưng cuộc gọi ấy đã bị theo dõi và
Innokenty bị bắt.</span></p>

nào. Khi bạn giàu có tiếng tăm, bạn là một thành viên của một nhóm được kính
trọng, và thật sự bạn không bao giờ bị đàn áp. Một cuộc gọi điện thoại là
một quyết định. Nhưng giờ đây ông đánh mất việc làm, địa vị, sức khoẻ, và
mất cả vợ mình, ông khám phá sự nghèo khó có ý nghĩa gì. Nghèo khó là không
có bạn bè và không có sự an toàn.</span></p>

kho tàng và ông biết điều đó. Ông có kinh nghiệm về sự thức tỉnh tâm linh.
Và như Kahlil Gibran đã nói: “Sự tỉnh thức tâm linh là điều quan trọng nhất
trong đời sống; nó là mục đích duy nhất của bản thân chúng ta”.</span></p>

được rằng mình sống theo những giá trị các mối Phúc thật? Trong những sự
việc tác động trực tiếp đến với chúng ta –việc làm, xe cộ, tiện nghi, nhà ở,
tương lai của con cái- chúng ta không sống như mọi người đó sao? Ngày nay
các môn đệ của Đức Giêsu thường sống trong tiện nghi sang trọng trong khi
nhiều người còn sống trong cảnh khốn cùng.</span></p>

cũng để chúng ta lại trong sự trống vắng của tinh thần. Chỉ khi sống bằng
những giá trị của Tin Mừng, khát vọng sâu xa nhất của chúng ta mới được thoả
mãn. Để hiểu biết các mối Phúc Thật, chúng ta cần một sự thức tỉnh tâm linh.</span></p>

nơi Người vốn là suối nguồn sức sống. Những người tín thác vào Thiên Chúa là
những người nghèo được Thiên Chúa chúc phúc trong các mối Phúc thật (Tin

người nghèo khó”, Người đã không chúc phúc cho sự đói khát và khốn cùng. Đói
khát và khốn cùng là điều xấu. Điều được chúc phúc là lòng trông cậy, tín
nhiệm Thiên Chúa. Những người đặt tín nhiệm của họ vào Thiên Chúa sẽ không
bị thất vọng. Chỉ Thiên Chúa mới có thể lấp đầy sự trống rỗng của chúng ta;
chỉ Thiên Chúa mới có thể thoả mãn khát vọng của tâm hồn chúng ta. Nhưng
thường chúng ta chạy đến Thiên Chúa sau cùng, thay vì chạy đến Thiên Chúa
trước tiên.</span></p>

nghèo khó đối với thế gian này sẽ được Thiên Chúa làm cho giàu có trong đức
tin (2,1-5). Bất cứ ai thực thi tác vụ trong đôi ba năm đều có thể xác nhận
chân lý ấy.</span></p>

của cải họ có. Đối với họ, chính thế gian này mới quan trọng. Thiên Chúa
không ít thì nhiều cũng thừa thãi, và đời sau thì xa vời và mơ hồ. Trái lại,
những người nghèo có xu hướng tự nhiên quay về với Thiên Chúa. Đối với họ,
mọi nguy cơ và khó khăn của đời sống làm cho Thiên Chúa và đời sau gần gũi
và hiện thực.</span></p>

điều tốt. Nhưng khi đời sống trở nên khó khăn hơn và luôn bị đe doạ, nó cũng
trở nên phong phú hơn bởi lẽ khi chúng ta càng ít mong đợi thì những điều
tốt lành của đời sống càng trở thành những ân huệ bất ngờ mà chúng ta đón
nhận với lòng biết ơn. Đó là lý do Đức Giêsu nói; “Phúc cho những kẻ nghèo
khó, vì Nước Trời là của họ”.</span></p>

hổ vì không có gì để bố thí, người nghèo đáp: “Tiếc thật, nhưng tôi cũng
nghèo như anh thôi”.</span></p>
