<span style="color: windowtext">Thứ Tư Lễ Tro là một trong những ngày thánh
thiêng quan trọng và phổ biến nhất trong lịch phụng vụ. Thứ Tư Lễ Tro khởi
đầu màu Chay, một mùa chay tịnh và cầu nguyện. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Thứ Tư Lễ Tro trải dài suốt 46 ngày cho tới
trước Chúa Nhật Chúa Phục sinh, và người Công giáo tham dự thánh lễ này,
nhiều Kitô hữu khác cũng cử hành tương tự. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Thứ Tư Lễ Tro bắt đầu từ truyền thống ăn
chay và sám hối của người Do Thái thời xưa. Việc thực hành này bao gồm xức
tro trên đầu. Tro biểu tượng cho bụi đất mà Thiên Chúa dựng nên chúng ta.
Khi Linh mục xức tro lên đầu ta, ngài nói những lời này: “Hãy nhớ bạn là bụi
tro, một mai bạn sẽ trở về tro bụi”. </span></p>

<span style="color: windowtext">Ngoài ra, linh mục cũng có thể nói: “Hãy sám
hối và tin vào Tin Mừng.” </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Tro cũng biểu trưng cho nỗi buồn sầu đau
khổ, theo nghĩa này, buồn sầu vì chúng ta phạm tội và hệ quả là ta xa cách
Thiên Chúa. </span></p>

<span style="color: windowtext">Nhiều bản văn từ thế kỷ thứ hai cho thấy
Giáo hội ám chỉ việc xức tro như một dấu chỉ sám hối.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Linh mục xức tro trong thánh lễ và tất cả
mọi người đều được mời gọi nhận lãnh tro như một dấu chứng thể hiện lòng ăn
năn sám hối. Thậm chí không phải là Kitô hữu, và những người bị vạ tuyệt
thông đều được mời gọi lãnh nhận tro. Tro được đốt từ những nhành lá đã làm
phép từ ngày Chúa Nhật lễ Lá trước đây. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Thật quan trọng để nhớ rằng Thứ Tư Lễ Tro là
một ngày cầu nguyện và ăn chay tỏ lòng sám hối. Nhiều tín hữu nghỉ làm việc
và chỉ ở nhà. Thật không thích hợp chút nào nếu dành ngày này để ăn uống,
mua sắm hoặc đi chơi sau khi được xức tro. Lễ hội thì không thích hợp chút
nào. Chỉ có trẻ em và người già hoặc bệnh nhân mới được đặc cách mà thôi. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Không nhất thiết phải giữ tro trên đầu trong
cả ngày, và chúng ta cũng có thể làm sạch tro sau Thánh Lễ. Tuy nhiên, nhiều
người vẫn giữ tro tới đêm khuya để nhắc nhớ mình. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Gần đây cũng có nhiều đổi thay trong mục vụ
nhằm xức tro cho những người đi đường ở nhiều nơi công cộng. Đấy dường như
không bị cấm cản, nhưng người Công Giáo nên biết việc thực hành này rất khác
so với của anh em Tin Lành. Người Công giáo vẫn nên nhận lãnh tro trong
thánh lễ mà thôi. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 18.0pt 0cm; text-indent:48px">
<span style="color: windowtext">Trong nhiều trường hợp, Linh mục có thể xức
tro hoặc một thành viên trong gia đình có thể xức tro cho bệnh nhân hoặc
người tàn tật. </span></p>
