Theo Đức Giêsu, cách hành xử thường tình của những người thu thuế hay phường
tội lỗi là «yêu thương kẻ yêu thương mình», «làm ơn cho kẻ làm ơn cho mình»,
«cho vay để được trả lại sòng phẳng». Như vậy, dù là người tội lỗi, họ vẫn
chủ trương luật công bằng, sòng phẳng, trong cả chuyện yêu thương, nghĩa là
ai yêu thương mình, thì mình phải yêu thương lại người ấy. Vì thế, họ chỉ
yêu thương người thân hay bạn bè mình mà thôi, vì yêu những người ấy thì họ
sẽ được yêu lại. Họ đòi hỏi: «Có qua có lại mới toại lòng nhau».</span></p>

Một cách tương tự, giới giang hồ, bụi đời ở khắp nơi đều chủ trương «ân đền,
oán trả». Mang ơn ai, thì họ nhất quyết phải biết ơn và đền ơn người ấy. Họ
gây oán hay làm thiệt hại ai, thì theo luật giang hồ, họ sẵn sàng bồi thường
cho người ấy. Còn ai gây oán hay gây bất công cho họ, thì họ cũng sẵn sàng
trả thù, nghĩa là phải tạo thiệt hại trở lại một cách tương xứng cho kẻ đã
gây thiệt hại cho mình. Họ chủ trương không khác gì luật Cựu ước: «Mạng đền
mạng, mắt đền mắt, răng đền răng, tay đền tay, chân đền chân, vết bỏng đền
vết bỏng, vết bầm đền vết bầm, vết thương đền vết thương» (Xh 21,24).</span></p>

Theo Đức Giêsu, phường tội lỗi hay gian ác đều hành xử như thế. Nếu ta cũng
hành xử như thế thì ta có hơn gì họ đâu? Còn nếu ta gây bất công, làm thiệt
hại người khác mà không đền bù, sống thiếu công bằng (cho dù là thứ công
bằng không tình thương), v.v… thì ta còn xấu xa và tệ hại hơn họ nữa. Hạng
người tội lỗi mà còn tôn trọng luật công bằng, nếu ta không tôn trọng luật
ấy thì ta thật không đáng được gọi là Kitô hữu, là người theo Chúa. Thế mà
khá nhiều người lỗi luật công bằng hằng ngày nhưng vẫn vỗ ngực tự hào mình
theo Chúa, mình là môn đệ Chúa!</span></p>

Là người Kitô hữu, là môn đệ Đức Giêsu, nếu ta tự cho rằng mình không thuộc
hạng người tội lỗi, thì ít ra ta cũng phải giữ được khá hoàn chỉnh những
luật mà chính hạng tội lỗi cũng tôn trọng, đó là luật công bằng. Luật công
bằng là luật tối thiểu, là luật nền tảng trong xã hội mà chính người xấu
cũng chủ trương phải tuân giữ, huống gì những người tự cho mình là tốt.</span></p>

Nhưng người Kitô hữu không thể tự hài lòng khi mình chỉ giữ được những luật
tối thiểu ấy. Đức Giêsu mời gọi những kẻ theo Ngài phải đi xa hơn sự công
bằng đó, vì nếu không đi xa hơn thì ta có hơn gì hạng tội lỗi, vì chính họ
cũng chủ trương sự công bằng và có thể thực hiện được sự công bằng ấy. Nhưng
cho dù có chủ trương và thực hiện được luật ấy, họ vẫn bị liệt vào hàng tội
lỗi.</span></p>

Theo lập luận của Đức Giêsu, nếu ta chỉ giúp đỡ những người mà ta biết họ sẽ
giúp đỡ lại ta, chỉ cho vay những ai ta nghĩ là sẽ hoàn trả lại ta, còn nếu
cho ai vay mà người ấy không trả được thì ta bực tức, nói xấu, dùng đủ mọi
biện pháp để đòi cho bằng được, bất chấp họ bị kẹt, v.v… nếu chỉ hành xử
được như thế thì ta tốt hơn hạng tầm thường hay tội lỗi ở chỗ nào? Vì kẻ tầm
thường và tội lỗi cũng hành xử y như thế!</span></p>

Điều quan trọng mà người Kitô hữu – tức những người theo Chúa – phải làm là
có tình thương đích thực. Tình thương luôn luôn vượt khỏi sự công bằng
thường tình. Nghĩa là: để là một Kitô hữu đích thực, thì một đằng phải luôn
giữ luật công bằng một cách hoàn hảo đối với người khác, một đằng phải thực
hiện tình thương. Tình thương khiến chúng ta không đòi hỏi những người nghèo
khó hơn, những người lâm cảnh khó khăn hơn mình phải giữ sự công bằng như
thế đối với mình. Nghĩa là «hãy làm ơn và cho vay mà chẳng hề hy vọng được
đền trả». Không đòi hỏi như thế không phải là không công bằng, mà là thực
hành một thứ công bằng cao hơn: công bằng có tình thương.</span></p>

Công bằng có tình thương khác với thứ công bằng máy móc, là công bằng thiếu
tình thương. Thứ công bằng có tình thương là thứ công bằng mà ta vẫn áp dụng
trong nội bộ gia đình chúng ta. Trong gia đình, chúng ta có thể tốn rất
nhiều tiền cho đứa con tàng tật, tốn cho nó hơn tất cả mọi người khác – vì
tiền thuốc thang, vì phải ăn uống cách đặc biệt – đang khi chính nó không
làm ra tiền và cũng chẳng làm được gì. Những cha mẹ có tình thương đích thực
sẽ thương những đứa con tàn tật hoặc hư đốn một cách đặc biệt và sẵn sàng hy
sinh cho chúng nhiều hơn những đứa con khác. Đó chính là công bằng có tình
thương, thứ công bằng «làm theo khả năng, nhưng hưởng thụ theo nhu cầu».</span></p>

Phân phát của cải cho người giầu và người nghèo, người cần ít và người cần
nhiều, theo cùng một tiêu chuẩn như nhau, thì đúng là công bằng, nhưng là
một thứ công bằng thiếu tình thương, và một cách nào đó không hợp lý. Người
giầu mà đòi người nghèo cũng phải sòng phẳng với mình trong vấn đề vật chất
tiền bạc, thì đúng là theo luật công bằng, nhưng không phải là thứ công bằng
mà Đức Giêsu chủ trương. Ngài chủ trương: «Ai vả anh má bên này, thì hãy giơ
cả má bên kia nữa. Ai đoạt áo ngoài của anh thì cũng đừng cản nó lấy áo
trong. Ai xin, thì hãy cho, ai lấy cái gì của anh, thì đừng đòi lại. Anh em
muốn người ta làm gì cho mình, thì cũng hãy làm cho người ta như vậy».</span></p>

Có những chế độ xã hội chủ trương thứ công bằng này – là «làm theo khả năng,
nhưng hưởng thụ theo nhu cầu» – nhưng không thực hiện nổi. Chính Đức Giêsu
Chúa chúng ta cũng chủ trương thứ công bằng này khi tuyên bố: «Khi đãi tiệc,
hãy mời những người nghèo khó, tàn tật, què quặt, đui mù. Họ không có gì đáp
lễ, và như thế bạn mới thật có phúc» (Lc 14,13-14). Vì thế, đây là thách đố
đối với người Kitô hữu. Nếu chúng ta không thực hiện nổi thứ công bằng này
trong đời sống chúng ta – ít nhất là giữa Kitô hữu với nhau, hay ít hơn nữa
là giữa đám thân nhân bạn bè thân quen của mình – thì một cách nào đó, chúng
ta đang chứng tỏ điều Đức Giêsu chủ trương cũng không tưởng như chủ trương
của những chế độ xã hội không tưởng kia.</span></p>
