1. Không một tôn giáo nào có một lịch sử kỳ lạ như Kitô giáo. Quả vậy,
không một tôn giáo nào bị bách hại nhiều, lâu dài và đau thương như Kitô
giáo; và cho dù bị bách hại nhiều, lâu dài và đau thương, Kitô giáo
không hề bị tiêu diệt, trái lại vẫn không ngừng tăng trưởng cả về phẩm
chất lẫn số lượng. Đó là những bí ẩn của lịch sử không thể lý giải bằng
lý lẽ tự nhiên, nhưng chỉ có thể hiểu được trong ánh sáng của niềm tin.</p>

Quả vậy, ngay từ những năm tháng đầu tiên loan báo Tin Mừng, Hội Thánh
đã trải qua 300 năm bị bách hại dưới thời các hoàng đế Roma. Rồi từ đó,
Phúc Âm được rao giảng ở đâu, thì ở đó không sớm thì muộn, các Kitô hữu
cũng bị bắt bớ và giết chết, Hội Thánh bị bách hại và loại trừ. Lịch sử
Hội Thánh là một lịch sử đầy những cuộc tử đạo, ở khắp mọi miền trên thế
giới, vào hết mọi thời kỳ trong lịch sử.</p>

Ngay trong thời đại chúng ta, trong thế kỷ XX và đầu thế kỷ XXI này, nếu
tính tổng cộng tất cả các Kitô hữu, gồm Công giáo, Chính thống, Anh giáo
và Tin lành, thì hằng năm có khoảng 170.000 người tử đạo, 200.000.000
người chịu bách hại vì đức tin Kitô giáo.</p>

Trên mảnh đất Việt Nam thân yêu này, 117 vị thánh đã được phúc tử đạo
trong một giai đoạn bách hại kéo dài đúng 117 năm, tính từ hai vị tử đạo
tiên khởi vào năm 1745 đến vị cuối cùng vào năm 1862, qua các triều đại
vua Lê chúa Trịnh, Tây Sơn và các triều nhà Nguyễn. Đó là chưa kể chân
phước Anrê Phú Yên tử đạo vào năm 1644, và hằng trăm ngàn tín hữu chết
vì đức tin nhưng chưa được phong thánh.</p>

Bức tranh trên đây là một thực tế, và đó cũng là một điều bí ẩn của lịch
sử Hội Thánh. Các Kitô hữu bị ghét, vì trước hết, chính Chúa Giêsu đã bị
ghét và đã chịu tử hình trên thánh giá. Chúa Giêsu chính là vị tử đạo
đầu tiên vì Tin Mừng mà Ngài rao giảng. Ngài là con đường dẫn đến sự
sống đích thực, nhưng thế gian lại yêu sự tối tăm hơn ánh sáng.</p>

Chúa nói: “Vì anh em không thuộc về thế gian, và Thầy đã chọn, đã tách
anh em khỏi thế gian, nên thế gian ghét anh em… Nếu họ đã bắt bớ Thầy,
họ cũng sẽ bắt bớ anh em… Họ chống lại anh em, vì anh em mang danh Thầy,
bởi họ không biết Đấng đã sai Thầy” (Ga 15, 19-21). Đơn giản chỉ là thế.
Sâu xa là như vậy.</p>

Tuy nhiên, Chúa đã hứa ở cùng Hội Thánh mọi ngày cho đến tận thế, và
Chúa đã tuyên bố không quyền năng nào có thể tiêu diệt Hội Thánh. “Trong
thế gian, anh em sẽ phải gian nan khốn khó. Nhưng can đảm lên, Thầy đã
thắng thế gian” (Ga 16, 33).</p>

2. Chúng ta hãy cùng nhau ôn lại đời sống đức tin của các thánh tử đạo
Việt Nam để xem các ngài đã tuyên xưng, đã sống và làm chứng cho đức tin
thế nào. Tại sao các Kitô hữu bị ghét bỏ, bị bắt bớ và giết chết? Các
thánh tử đạo đã làm gì?</p>

Các thánh tử đạo bị giết chỉ vì tuyên xưng lòng tin vào Chúa Giêsu. Lòng
tin ấy biểu lộ qua việc tôn thờ thánh giá Chúa. Thánh Anrê Kim Thông nói
với quan tỉnh: “Thánh giá tôi kính thờ, tôi giẫm lên sao được!” Thánh
Têôphan Ven nói: “Tôi đã suốt đời thuyết giảng về đạo thập giá, nay tôi
lại đạp lên thập giá thế nào được? Tôi thiết nghĩ sự sống đời này đâu
quí hoá đến độ tôi phải bỏ đạo mà mua!”</p>

Chắc chắn không phải vì các ngài đã theo đạo Tây mà phản bội tổ quốc và
dân tộc. Các ngài tôn trọng vua quan và hết lòng vì quê hương. Thánh
linh mục Tự đối đáp với quan tòa: “Tôi kính Thiên Chúa như Thượng Phụ,
kính vua như trung phụ, và kính song thân như hạ phụ. Không thể nghe cha
ruột để hại vua, tôi cũng không thể vì vua mà phạm đến Thượng Phụ là
Thiên Chúa được.”</p>

Nhiều vị thánh đã ở trong hàng ngũ quân đội bảo vệ đất nước. Thánh Trần
Văn Trung là một binh sĩ, đã bị giết vì khẳng khái tuyên bố: “Tôi là
Kitô hữu, tôi sẵn sàng đi đánh kẻ thù của đất nước, nhưng bỏ đạo thì
không bao giờ.” Thánh linh mục Khuông từng tuyên bố: “Đạo Giatô không
những cấm tín hữu chống lại triều đình, mà còn khuyến khích để họ cầu
nguyện và góp phần giúp quê hương an ninh thịnh vượng.” Yêu nước không
có nghĩa là phải thù ghét loại trừ các Kitô hữu và chống lại Kitô giáo.</p>

3. Lời tuyên xưng của các thánh tử đạo không chỉ là lời tuyên bố trong
một khoảnh khắc nhất thời trước khi chết, nhưng đó là hoa trái kết tinh
từ một đời sống thấm nhuần Lời Chúa. Các ngài đã sống đức tin, đã thể
hiện Tin Mừng yêu thương trong chính đời sống của mình.</p>

Trước hết, đời sống đức tin của các thánh tử đạo được biểu lộ ngay trong
bổn phận hằng ngày của đời sống gia đình.</p>

Dù thời đó, chế độ đa thê vẫn đang thịnh hành trong xã hội Việt Nam,
nhưng các thánh tử đạo đã trung thành với giáo huấn một vợ một chồng của
Phúc Âm. Dĩ nhiên có những vị lúc đầu đã không trung thành với lời cam
kết hôn nhân, như các thánh Gẫm, binh sĩ Huy, Cai Thìn, quan Hồ Đình
Hy... đã có thời gian sa ngã, thế nhưng sau đó tất cả đều biết trở về để
vun đắp lại mái ấm gia đình của mình.</p>

Các thánh chu toàn bổn phận nuôi dạy con cái theo tinh thần đức tin.
Thánh Thọ căn dặn các con vào thăm trong tù: “Các con thân mến, cha
không còn làm gì giúp các con ở thế gian này được nữa, cha chỉ còn lo

Về phần thánh Anê Lê Thị Thành, vị thánh nữ duy nhất trong số các vị tử
đạo, người con gái thứ hai của ngài là cô Anna Năm xác nhận: “Bố mẹ
chúng tôi chỉ gả các con gái cho những người thanh niên đạo hạnh. Sau
khi tôi kết hôn, mẹ tôi thường đến thăm chúng tôi và khuyên bảo những
lời tốt lành. Có lần mẹ dạy tôi: "Tuân theo Ý Chúa, con lập gia đình là
gánh rất nặng. Con phải ăn ở khôn ngoan, đừng cãi lời cha mẹ chồng. Hãy
vui lòng nhận thánh giá Chúa gửi cho.” Người cũng thường khuyên vợ chồng
tôi: “Hai con hãy sống hoà hợp, vui vẻ, đừng để ai nghe chúng con cãi

Thánh y sĩ Phan Đắc Hòa rộng tay giúp người nghèo khổ, riêng bệnh nhân
túng thiếu, không những ông chữa bệnh miễn phí, lại còn giúp tiền giúp
lúa. Thánh Martinô Thọ nói: "Công bằng chưa đủ, phải có bác ái nữa, mà
muốn thực thi bác ái phải có điều kiện", nên ngài trồng thêm vườn dâu
kiếm tiền giúp người thiếu thốn. Người cùng tử đạo với ngài là Gioan Cỏn
từng mạnh dạn đấu tranh cho người nghèo chống lại chính sách đòi sưu cao
thuế nặng. Thánh Năm Thuông là ân nhân của viện cô nhi trong vùng. Còn
thánh Trùm Đích thường xuyên thăm viếng trại cùi và sẵn sàng nuôi người
mắc bệnh dịch tại nhà mình.</p>

Nếu lòng anh dũng giúp các vị tử đạo bình thản đón nhận cái chết không
run sợ, không quỵ lụy khóc than, thì chính lòng bao dung thứ tha mới là
đặc tính phân biệt vị tử đạo với những vị anh hùng vì lý do khác.</p>

Các tín hữu chỉ thực sự chết vì đạo nếu biểu lộ được tình yêu, lòng nhân
ái, sự bao dung của Tin Mừng. Các vị chắc chắn không đồng ý với bản án
bất công của triều đình, nhưng như Đức Giêsu trên thánh giá vẫn cầu
nguyện cho quân lính giết hại mình, các chứng nhân tử đạo vẫn tiếp tục
yêu thương vua quan, và những người hành xử mình.</p>

quan.” Thánh Hoàng Lương Cảnh làm cho quan quân phá lên cười khi ngài
đọc: “Cầu Chúa Giêsu, xin cho các quan trị nước cho yên, càng ngày càng

4. Lời tuyên xưng và đời sống đức tin của các thánh tử đạo đã làm trổ
sinh hoa trái phong phú trên quê hương Việt Nam thân yêu này. Chính đời
sống của các thánh tử đạo đã cảm hóa và chiếm được tình cảm của bà con
hàng xóm. Dù triều đình nhà Nguyễn ra chiếu chỉ bách hại, bà con hàng
xóm vẫn tỏ dấu hiệu thân ái với người công giáo.</p>

Thánh linh mục Vũ Bá Loan là niên trưởng 84 tuổi, được mọi người kính
trọng gọi bằng “cụ”, ngài không bị đánh đòn; và trong ngày xử, mười lý
hình chạy trốn, đến người thứ mười một, đã lịch sự xin phép: “Việc vua
truyền cháu phải làm, xin cụ xá lỗi cho. Cháu sẽ cố giúp cụ chết êm ái.
Khi về trời cụ nhớ đến cháu nhé.” Trong vụ án thánh linh mục Gioan Đạt,
viên cai ngục nói: “Tôi thấy cụ khôn ngoan, đạo đức, thì muốn kết nghĩa
huynh đệ lắm, ngặt vì cụ sắp bị án tử rồi. Tôi xin hứa biếu cụ một cỗ
quan tài để biểu lộ lòng tôi quí cụ.”</p>

Hơn nữa, ngay trong lúc bị giam tù, các ngài đã đưa hằng trăm người đến
với Chúa. Và từ đó đến nay, hạt giống Tin Mừng không ngừng lớn lên trong
đất nước này. Tin Mừng như men đang thấm vào mọi sinh hoạt xã hội để đưa
thế gian đi theo con đường của chân lý Phúc Âm.</p>

Là con cháu các thánh tử đạo, chúng ta hãy phát huy gia sản đức tin mà
cha ông đã để lại cho chúng ta. Đức tin ấy đã lớn lên trong máu và nước
mắt, trong hy sinh và gian khổ. Bao nhiêu thế hệ đã nằm xuống để chúng
ta được trung kiên với đức tin tông truyền.</p>

Ngày nay, tuy không còn phải chịu những đau thương dữ dằn như trong quá
khứ, nhưng chúng ta đang phải đối diện với một cuộc tấn công khác có thể
còn nguy hiểm gấp bội, đó là sức mạnh của tiền bạc, địa vị, khoái lạc,
tự do buông thả. Những sức mạnh này đã làm cho bao nhiêu tín hữu gục
ngã, đã lôi kéo bao nhiêu Kitô hữu rời xa Hội Thánh, đã làm cho biết bao
người quên Thiên Chúa.</p>

Chúng ta hãy bắt chước các thánh tử đạo tuyên xưng đức tin một cách xác
tín, ý thức. Chúng ta có thể nói như thánh Phaolô không: “Tôi biết tôi
đã tin vào ai” (2Tm 1, 12)? Hãy để cho lòng tin vào Chúa thấm nhuần và
biến đổi cuộc sống chúng ta, để tất cả mọi hành vi, ứng xử, chọn lựa,
thái độ, của chúng ta luôn tỏa chiếu sức mạnh của Tin Mừng và tạo nên
một sức hấp dẫn đối với những người chung quanh để đưa họ đến với Chúa
Giêsu Cứu Thế.</p>
