Wiliam Oscar Wilde kể một huyền thoại sâu sắc: “Họa mi và bông hồng đỏ”.
Một sớm mùa hè, họa mi làm tổ trên cành dương đã nghe trọn lời than thở
của một chàng trai bên cửa sổ: “Nếu anh không kiếm nổi bông hồng đỏ để
em cài ngực áo trong buổi dạ hội đêm nay, em sẽ xa anh mãi mãi”. Họa mi
dư hiểu chàng trai đã lang thang khắp các nương đồng. Nhưng tìm đâu ra
một bông hồng đỏ dưới nắng cháy mùa hạ này? Trời ơi, người tình sẽ chắp
cánh bay xa. Họa mi không chịu nổi dằn vặt bi thương của chàng. Họa mi
phải ra tay thôi. Nàng khép cánh trước cây hoa hồng bên giếng nước nài

hồng bí nhiệm, vì trên ngực áo một bông hồng giả đang ngự trị… Sáng hôm
sau, dân làng bắt gặp một đóa hồng bị nghiền nát, nằm tả tơi dưới vết
bánh xe bò.</span></p>

Câu chuyện trên đây là một huyền thoại, nhưng huyền thoại chuyên chở một
nội dung rất thực: Đó là nét thực của tình yêu, của tự do, của hy sinh.
Tình yêu phải được nuôi dưỡng bằng hy sinh, bằng máu, bằng cả sinh mạng.
“Ai muốn theo Ta, hãy từ bỏ mình”. Đây là một lời mời gọi hoàn toàn tự
do. Con người có toàn quyền lựa chọn. Chúa không bắt buộc nhưng mời gọi.
Người mời gọi chúng ta từ bỏ mình, nghĩa là từ bỏ mọi sự, kể cả mạng
sống.</span></p>

Nói đến từ bỏ là đụng đến hy sinh, nói đến hy sinh là phải thiệt thòi
mất mát. Cũng như nói đến tình yêu là đụng đến tự do, và đụng đến tự do
là phải dấn thân mạo hiểm. Có thể được chấp nhận hay bị từ khước. Có thể
“được cả” mà cũng có thể “ngã về không”. Chính cái bấp bênh trong tình
yêu, trong chọn lựa, mới làm bừng sáng nét cao đẹp của hy sinh, từ bỏ.</span></p>

sinh bao giờ cũng có hương thơm của hạnh phúc. Từ bỏ bao giờ cũng cho
tâm hồn nét thanh cao. Hy sinh và từ bỏ là chuẩn bị luống cày cho hạt
giống mọc lên.</span></p>

ta chẳng lỗ lã chút nào. Chúng ta chối từ cái tương đối để được Đấng
tuyệt đối, khước từ cái mau qua để đón nhận cái vĩnh hằng, từ bỏ cuộc
sống hay chết để được sự sống đời đời, vì “Ai biết chết thì sẽ biết
sống”.</span></p>
