Vào tháng 9 năm 1648, trước ngày chịu chức Phó Tế, Đức Cha Jacques Bénigne
Bossuet (1627-1704) đã suy niệm về sự chết như sau: “Ðời người không đáng là
bao, và tất cả những gì có cùng có hạn đều chẳng đáng là bao. Người ta có
sống trên đời này lâu dài bao nhiêu, cho đi một nghìn năm, thì rồi cũng đến
ngày hết hạn. Cuộc đời tôi sống được tám mươi tuổi là cùng; cho được một
trăm tuổi đi nữa, đã có một lúc tôi chưa có! Và đến một lúc tôi sẽ không còn
nữa! và thời gian tôi sống, tôi chiếm một chỗ quá ít ỏi trong vực thẳm vĩ
đại của thời gian! tôi chẳng là gì cả; cái khoảng thời gian ngắn ngủi đó
không thể làm cho tôi khác biệt nhiều với cái hư vô mà tôi phải đi đến.
Ðường đời tôi đi chỉ được tám mươi năm là cùng, và để đi đến đó, tôi phải
vượt qua biết bao nhiêu hiểm nguy, biết bao nhiêu bệnh tật, v...v? ... và
tất cả những gì tôi thấy cũng chỉ là điều hão huyền: “Praeterit figura hujus
mundi,” “Bộ mặt thế gian này đang qua đi.” (1 Cr 7, 9).</span></p>

Tại sao? Tại sao con người ta báo hiệu sự hiện hữu của mình trên cõi đời này
không phải là một tiếng cười mà là một tiếng khóc? Phải chăng đó chính là
dấu hiệu tiên báo về một cuộc đời đau khổ - “đời là bể khổ” theo nhân sinh
quan Phật Giáo?</span></p>

Quả thực nếu chỉ nhìn cuộc đời và cái chết như những viễn cảnh trên thì thực
sự bế tắc và u uất. Sự chết đúng là một thực tế đáng sợ và là một sự thật
không thể chối cãi. Nó cũng là sự công bằng đối với tất cả mọi người, từ
“hạng thường dân đến người quyền quý, hạng phú gia với kẻ cơ bần” đều phải
chết. Nói khác đi, cái chết là một bí ẩn và là sự bất lực của cả nhân loại.
Đứng trước cái chết, “con người không những bị hành hạ bởi đau khổ và sự
tiến dần đến tan rã của thân xác, mà hơn thế nữa, còn bị dày vò bởi nỗi lo
sợ bị tiêu diệt đời đời... Mọi cố gắng của kỹ thuật, dù rất hữu ích, cũng
không thể làm nguôi được nỗi lo âu của con người. (GS 18).</span></p>

Nhưng người kitô hữu chúng ta không sợ sự sống, không chán ngán cuộc đời và
cũng không sợ sự chết, bởi vì “Chúa Kitô đã đem lại chiến thắng ấy khi Người
sống lại và nhờ cái chết của Người, Người đã giải phóng con người khỏi sự
chết. Vậy đức tin với những lý chứng vững chắc đem lại giải đáp cho bất cứ
ai khắc khoải ưu tư về số phận tương lai của mình. Đồng thời đức tin còn cho
con người khả năng hiệp thông với những anh em thân yêu đã chết trong Chúa
Kitô, và làm cho họ hy vọng rằng những người ấy đã được sống thực sự nơi
Thiên Chúa” (GS 18).</span></p>

Biết được như thế, sống được như thế và làm được như thế, chúng ta không coi
coi sự chết như một sự thù địch, nhưng trái lại, chúng ta phải biết ơn sự
chết, vì nó chính là cánh cổng đưa chúng ta đi vào sự sống trường sinh, một
sự tái sinh bất diệt trong Đức Kitô, một sự giải thoát đưa chúng ta tới sự
sống viên mãn trong vương quốc của Ngài.</span></p>

Trước cái chết của Đức Cố Giám Mục Alexis trong ngày Lễ Chúa Kitô, kết thúc
năm phụng vụ, khiến chúng ta hồi tâm phản tỉnh để trở về với cõi lòng để
nhìn lại những ngày tháng mà chúng ta đang sống, ngày mà chúng ta sẽ từ giã
cuộc đời này. Chúng ta sẽ đi về đâu? Đâu là ý nghĩa đích thực của cuộc đời
này? Đâu là những giá trị để chúng ta bám víu? Để từ đó chúng ta tìm ra câu
trả lời cho những hành động của mình khi mùa phúc vẫn còn: Vì ai mà ta sống?
Vì cái gì để ta hi sinh? Và vì lý tưởng nào để chúng ta phấn đấu? Nói cách
khác, cái chết của Đức Cố Giám Mục trong dịp cuối năm phụng vụ hướng chúng
ta nghĩ đến thời cánh chung, hướng về sự sống đích thực và vương quốc vĩnh
cửu - Vương quốc của Đức Kitô - Vương quốc tình yêu và công lý. Đó là sự
tỉnh thức và khôn ngoan như Chúa hằng mong muốn.</span></p>

Đức Cố Giám Mục Alexis là đầy tớ trung tín và khôn ngoan mà Chúa đã đặt lên
coi sóc Giáo phận. Ngài đã biết lựa chọn những giá trị vĩnh cửu khi còn tại
thế để rồi hoàn tất cuộc đời một cách êm ái như đi vào giấc ngủ sâu. Ngài đã
hiến trọn thân mình để dấn thân phục vụ những giá trị Tin Mừng trong niềm
hân hoan và tận tụy, như lời Ngôn sứ Isaia: “Đẹp thay bước chân người đi
gieo Tin Mừng – Pheo kơ Dôm Yak Jơ\ng Bo#k Jai Bơ\r Xô Pheo” (Is 52,7). Đó
là điều tâm niệm của người mục tử nhân hiền khi còn sống, và đã được một
nghệ nhân khắc họa tinh tế trên linh cữu của ngài bằng hai thứ tiếng để theo
ngài đi vào lòng đất.</span></p>

Con cái ngài vẫn tề tựu quanh ngài để nhìn ngắm một người cha hiền hậu đang
an giấc trong Chúa Kitô Phục Sinh và cùng nhau suy gẫm về sự chết, suy gẫm
về sự vô thường của trần gian. Nó đang qua đi cùng với tất cả các giá trị
trong nó. Cuộc sống là một chuỗi những u sầu, bèo bọt, thê lương và tang tóc
nếu vắng bóng Thiên Chúa Tình Yêu. Kiếp người quả đau khổ như tiếng khóc lúc
chào đời, nhưng hãy sống sao để khi từ giã cõi đời, mọi người chung quanh
khóc lóc vì lưu luyến nhớ thương, còn ta mỉm cười thanh thản ra đi vào cõi
vĩnh hằng. Muốn được như thế, cần phải biết sống trọn vẹn cuộc sống của
chính mình, biết trao tình yêu, sự tha thứ, biết phụng sự Chúa và tha nhân
trong cuộc đời phù du mau qua chóng hết này. Hay nói như Thánh Phaolô: “Đối
với tôi, sống là Đức Kitô, và chết là một mối lợi”. Vì thế, “Không có gì
tách được chúng ta ra khỏi tình yêu của Thiên Chúa thể hiện nơi Đức Giêsu
Kitô, Chúa chúng ta.” (Rm 8, 39).</span></p>
