Alexander Đại đế là một vị vua vĩ
đại. Trên đường khải hoàn sau khi
chinh phạt nhiều nước, ông ngã bệnh.
Vào thời khắc ấy, những vùng đất ông
chiếm được, quân đội hùng mạnh,
những thanh gươm bén, và sự giàu có
không còn nghĩa lý gì với ông. Ông
nhận ra rằng cái chết sắp sửa đến và
ông sẽ không về kịp mảnh đất quê
hương. Ông bảo các sỹ quan của mình:
“<i>Ta sắp sửa rời bỏ thế gian này.
Ta có ba điều nguyện ước. Các ngươi
cần phải thực hiện những gì ta bảo</i>”.
Các vị tướng tuân lệnh trong dòng
nước mắt.</span></div>

“Điều ước đầu tiên của ta là hãy bảo
thầy thuốc của ta mang cái hòm rỗng

Sau khi cố hít thở một hơi,
Alexander nói tiếp: “<i>Ước nguyện
thứ hai của ta là hãy rải vàng, bạc
và châu báu trong kho tàng của ta
trên suốt dọc đường đến nấm mồ khi
các ngươi mang quan tài của ta ra
nghĩa địa”</i>. Sau khi quấn mình
trong chiếc áo khoác và nghỉ một
lúc, ông nói tiếp: “<i>Ước muốn cuối
cùng của ta là hãy đặt 2 bàn tay của
ta ra bên ngoài cỗ quan tài”.</i></span></div>

rất tò mò, nhưng không ai dám hỏi
nguyên nhân. Vị sủng tướng của
Alexander hôn bàn tay ông và hỏi:<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><i>“Thưa
đức Vua, chúng thần sẽ làm theo mệnh
lệnh của Ngài. Nhưng Ngài có thể cho
chúng thần biết tại sao Ngài lại
muốn chúng thần làm như vậy hay
không?</i>”</span></div>

chết, thầy thuốc hoàn toàn bất lực.
Ta hy vọng mọi người sẽ học được
rằng phải trân quý cuộc sống của họ.</span></i></div>

theo sự giàu có, nhưng cuối cùng, ta
nhận ra rằng mình đã lãng phí hầu
hết thời gian của đời người.</span></i></div>

Câu chuyện thứ hai:</span></b></div>

Ngày xưa, ở Ấn Độ cổ có một người
đàn ông vì chán ghét cõi hồng trần
nên đã tìm đến cửa Phật.</span></div>

Mặc dù vậy, nhưng ông vẫn còn nhiều
ham muốn với thế gian. Ông thường
tắm nước nóng và dùng dầu thơm để
sát lên thân thể, khi đi xin ăn cũng
lựa chọn những nhà giàu để xin, tâm
hồn bị chôn vùi sâu trong vật chất,
như bị dây mơ trói thân thể vậy,
không lúc nào tự tại. Mặc dù trên
hình thức ông đã xuất gia, thụ giới,
nhưng về hành vi và cảnh giới thì
vẫn là phàm phu tục tử, cách thánh
đạo Niết Bàn còn xa lắm.</span></div>

Một hôm, khi đang chuẩn bị đi ra
ngoài khất thực, vị sư này thấy các
tỳ kheo bàn tán sôi nổi về một Tôn
giả có tên là Upagupta, một nhà sư
nổi tiếng đạo hạnh cao thâm, đang
trú ngụ tại nước Ma La. Vị tỳ kheo
mới xuất gia này rất tò mò về tôn
giả Upagupta nên quyết định tới diện
kiến.</span></div>

Vừa nhìn thấy vị tỳ kheo, Tôn giả

Tôn giả Upagupta quan sát vị tỳ kheo
một lúc, biết người này căn cơ thâm
hậu, chẳng qua vẫn còn bị ái dục
trói buộc nên mới thành ra như vậy,
bèn hỏi: “<i>Ông có thể hoàn toàn
nghe theo lời giảng của ta, chấp
nhận giáo huấn của ta, chiểu theo ý
chỉ của ta mà làm hay không?”</i></span></div>

Sáng sớm hôm sau, tôn giả Upagupta
dẫn vị tỳ kheo lên núi, trước tiên
dạy ông học tập thiền định sau lại
dặn ông phải tuyệt đối phục tùng mới
có thể đắc chính quả. Sau khi thuyết
giảng một hồi, Tôn giả Upagupta vận
dụng lực thần thông, hóa ra một cây
đại thụ, rồi bảo: “<i>Ông cần phải
trèo lên cái cây này.”</i></span></div>

Vị tỳ kheo “dạ” một tiếng rồi nhanh
chóng trèo lên cây đại thụ. Lên được
nửa chừng, cảm thấy thấm mệt, vị tỳ
kheo liền dừng lại, lấy vạt áo lau
mồ hôi, bất giác nhìn xuống thì
không khỏi giật mình khi thấy một
cái hố lớn xuất hiện ở dưới đó từ
khi nào, sâu không thấy đáy.</span></div>

Tôn giả Upagupta ngồi đả tọa ngay

tỳ kheo run cầm cập, không biết phải
làm sao, đành cắn răng, buông thõng
hai chân.</span></div>

Vị tỳ kheo không còn cách nào khác,
đành buông tâm không nghĩ gì nữa,
vừa buông tay kia ra liền rơi vào
cái hố sâu, vừa sâu hoắm vừa đen
ngòm. Lúc này ông hồn xiêu phách
lạc, toàn thân lạnh ngắt, nhưng khi
mở mắt ra nhìn thì thấy cái cây và
chiếc hố đã biến đâu mất, chỉ thấy
Tôn giả Upagupta đang ngồi trước mặt
mình, nhìn ông một cách từ bi: “<i>Giờ
ta hỏi ông, khi ông rơi xuống cái hố
đó, ông còn thấy thế gian có gì đáng
để thích nữa không?”</i></span></div>

“<i>Là như thế. Hết thảy mọi thứ thế
gian đều là hư ảo hết. Khi sắc thân
ảo diệt, ái dục cũng theo đó mà ảo
diệt. Nếu ông có thể nhìn thấu sắc
thân vô thường, thoát khỏi ái chấp
trói buộc, thì sẽ giải thoát khỏi
nó. Ưa thích là căn nguyên của phiền
não sinh tử, hãy cẩn thận với nó,

Thực ra, phú quý hay bần tiện trên
thế gian cũng như một dòng nước
chảy. Nó không ngừng thay đổi vào
mỗi thời khắc. Đối diện với
sinh-lão-bệnh-tử trong đời người,
thì giàu hay nghèo của con người thế
gian dường như vô lực. Thế nên đôi
khi tôi cảm thấy rằng không có gì
trong thế giới này có thể dựa vào,
kể cả tiền bạc, quyền lực, tình cảm
và thậm chí là cả sức khỏe. Tất cả
mọi thứ giống như là bóng trăng trên
mặt nước. Mặc dù chúng ta theo đuổi
những điều này không biết mệt mỏi,
chúng ta thấy rằng cuối cùng chúng
chỉ là tạm thời. Không có gì trong
những thứ này là điều quan trọng
nhất trong đời người.</span></div>
