Từng hỏi một số người Công giáo Việt Nam rằng trong Thánh lễ thì
quyên góp tiền thau khi nào, chúng tôi thường nhận được câu trả lời
là khi cha đang giảng hay đang khi đọc kinh Tin kính. Câu trả lời
này phản ánh một thực tế là tại các thánh đường của chúng ta thực
hành quyên góp tiền thau thường diễn ra đang khi các tín hữu nghe
giảng hay đọc kinh Tin kính, tức thuộc về phần Phụng vụ Lời Chúa
trong khi nó phải thuộc về phần Phụng vụ Thánh Thể. Căn cứ vào phần
trình bày tóm tắt dưới đây về lịch sử và hướng dẫn của Giáo Hội liên
quan đến nghi thức tiến dâng lễ phẩm, chúng ta có thể kết luận rằng
đây là thực hành không đúng thời điểm và cần phải thay đổi. </span></p>

Tuy sách Didache không nói gì về nghi thức dâng lễ vật, nhưng từ ban
đầu, các tín hữu đưa bánh rượu đặt trên bàn vị chủ sự để cử hành <em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Bữa
tối của Chúa</em>, như họ thường gọi, hay cử hành Hy lễ Tạ ơn (<em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Eucharistia</em>)<em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">.</em>1
Thánh Justinô tử đạo (100-165), người đầu tiên mô tả cụ thể việc cử
hành Thánh Thể, đã nói đến việc tiến dâng bánh và rượu cùng với
nước, vào cuối buổi cử hành, vị chủ tọa cộng đoàn sẽ phân phát cho
các bà góa, trẻ mồ côi, người đau bệnh và tù nhân những gì mà các
thành viên giàu có đặt trước mặt ngài.2 Thời thánh Hippôlytô (khoảng
170-236), trong sách <em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Truyền
thống Tông đồ3</em> của mình, ngài có nhắc đến lễ phẩm 4 lần, tức là
bánh và rượu được dâng tiến sẽ trở thành Mình và Máu Chúa Kitô, công
việc đưa bánh rượu lên bàn thờ được dành cho các phó tế.4 Khi Bữa ăn
Huynh đệ (<em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Agape</em>)
không còn nữa, các tín hữu vẫn tiếp tục đưa của lễ đến để tham dự
Thánh lễ mà Tertunianô (160-220) coi những lễ phẩm này như là quỹ ký
gởi của lòng đạo đức để dành trợ giúp những người nghèo, già nua, mồ
côi, đắm tàu…5 Trong những của lễ này, vào thế kỷ II- III, các phó
tế tiếp nhận lễ phẩm bánh và rượu và trình bày chúng cho Đức Giám
mục để ngài cử hành Hy tế Thánh Thể. Trong thế kỷ III, lý do Giáo
Hội khuyến khích các tín hữu đem dâng bánh rượu và các hoa mầu ruộng
đất khi tham dự Thánh lễ là nhằm giúp các tín hữu biết trân trọng
các đối tượng vật chất cũng như nhằm chống lại phái Ngộ đạo thuyết
vốn chủ trương những gì thuộc vật chất phải loại trừ.6 Cũng trong
thế kỷ III, thánh Cyprianô khuyến khích các tín hữu mang lễ vật của
họ đến thánh đường.7</span></p>

Sang thế kỷ IV, theo tường thuật của thánh Giêrônimô, các tín hữu
đem theo lễ phẩm cũng như ý nguyện của mình khi đến tham dự Thánh
lễ. Việc tiến dâng lễ vật lúc này trở thành thực hành bình thường
trong Giáo Hội Tây phương. Tuy nhiên, thánh Augustinô cho biết, việc
tiến lễ chỉ dành riêng cho các tín hữu bình thường vì những anh chị
em dự tòng cũng như những người phạm tội công khai được giải tán cho
về sau Lời nguyện Tín hữu. Họ chỉ hiện diện trong phần Phụng vụ Lời
Chúa chứ không được tham dự phần Phụng vụ Thánh Thể sau đó. Trong
nghi thức dâng lễ vật, các tín hữu rước lễ vật và đặt chúng ở một
chỗ thuận tiện (gian ngang của Nhà thờ Roma) trước Thánh lễ. Sau
Phụng vụ Lời Chúa, thầy phó tế sẽ đưa các lễ phẩm này đến cho Giám
mục. Ngoài của lễ là bánh và rượu, sách <em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Truyền
thống Tông đồ</em> cho biết, các tín hữu còn mang lúa mì, nho, dầu,
nến, đèn, hương, vải, trái cây, bánh sữa, mật ong... và nhiều thứ
khác. Nhiều Công đồng địa phương đã tìm cách hạn chế một số loại của
lễ, và sách <em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Hiến
chế các Tông đồ</em> <em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">8</em>(năm
380) liệt kê những thứ được phép là bánh, rượu, hương, hạt lúa, trái
nho, trái ôliu và nến sáp.9 Rượu được đựng trong bình lớn có quai,
bánh mì đặt trên bàn rồi dùng tấm khăn lớn phủ lại cho khỏi bụi, còn
các của lễ khác thì đặt bên cạnh bàn thờ.10 </span></p>

Vì mỗi người đều mang của lễ lên dâng, nên việc dâng lễ vật kéo dài
khá lâu, nhiều khi gây náo động và mất trật tự. Để hạn chế đến mức
tối đa vấn đề ồn ào và chia trí như thế, đồng thời tạo cho việc di
chuyển thể lý có một ý nghĩa thiêng liêng, nhất là khi nền phụng vụ
Roma lan truyền đến những vùng đất khác, từ thế kỷ IV đến thế kỷ X,
người ta bắt đầu tổ chức những cuộc rước kiệu thực sự và long
trọng.11 Cuộc rước lễ phẩm gồm tất cả những người đem lễ vật cùng
tiến lên với nhau, có bài hát kèm theo cuộc rước, thường là Thánh
vịnh hay Tiền xướng, hầu giữ được sự trang nghiêm và sốt sắng khi cử
hành.</span></p>

Ở Tây phương, cuộc rước lễ phẩm sa sút dần dần suốt thời kỳ tiền
Trung cổ. Lý do là vì bánh có men thông thường không thích hợp cho
cử hành Thánh Thể nữa. Mặt khác, số người tham dự Thánh lễ và lên
Rước lễ ngày càng ít ỏi đi. Cuộc rước dâng lễ kể như biến mất khi
người ta thay đổi lễ vật tiến dâng từ sản phẩm nông nghiệp sang dâng
cúng tiền bạc. Từ đó, quyên góp tiền bằng những thùng hay giỏ tiền
trở thành một thực hành phổ biến trong Giáo Hội.12 </span></p>

Vào thời Trung cổ, sau khi phụng vụ Roma truyền qua Pháp, bị ảnh
hưởng ngôn ngữ và khuynh hướng thần học tại đây, Thánh lễ dần dần
trở nên xa lạ với giáo dân. Trong phần dâng lễ, họ không còn tích
cực tham dự như trước. Chắc chắn từ ban đầu, bánh được đem dâng tiến
là những ổ bánh mì, vì vậy, việc <em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">bẻ
bánh</em> (<em style="outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; border: 0px none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px">fractio
panis</em>) ra những phần nhỏ đem phân phát cho nhiều người tham dự
là điều cần thiết trong suốt thời gian dài trong Giáo Hội thời cổ.</span></p>

Từ thế kỷ VIII-IX, khác với Giáo Hội Đông phương vẫn tiếp tục dùng
bánh có men để dâng Thánh lễ, Giáo Hội bên Tây phương chuyển sang
chỉ dùng bánh không men thay cho bánh có men là thứ bánh hằng ngày
dân chúng vẫn dùng trong các bữa ăn và có thể mua cách dễ dàng tại
các tiệm bánh. Vì bánh không men được chuẩn bị cách đơn giản từ bột
và nước mà không thêm bất kỳ một loại men nào, cho nên có thể giữ
được lâu mà không sợ hư. Đàng khác, để tỏ lòng cung kính, người ta
làm thứ bánh riêng theo hình tròn, đẹp và trắng tinh.13 Bánh loại
này không dễ bị rơi vãi, dễ dàng phân phát cho nhiều người, do vậy
không cần giáo dân đem lễ vật đến dâng trong phần chuẩn bị lễ vật
nữa. Đó là lý do thay vì dân chúng mang bánh đến tiến dâng, sang thế
kỷ XI, người ta dâng cúng tiền bạc.14 Điều này kéo theo hai việc: 1]
Cuộc rước kiệu phẩm vật biến mất; 2] Hình thành thực hành quyên tiền
trong Thánh lễ, xuất hiện khái niệm bổng lễ và thực hành xin lễ các
linh mục, nhất là gia đình xin lễ cầu cho người quá cố của họ.15</span></p>

Cuối thời Trung cổ, một thực hành phổ biến là các linh mục cử hành
Thánh lễ tư riêng với một chú giúp lễ, nghĩa là ngài đảm nhiệm hầu
hết các phận vụ trong Thánh lễ. Do vậy, lễ phẩm thường được đặt trên
bàn thờ ngay từ đầu Thánh lễ. Dân chúng không còn trực tiếp đem đặt
lễ phẩm trên bàn thờ nữa.</span></p>

Thời hậu Công đồng Trentô (theo Sách lễ 1570), có sự phân biệt rõ
ràng giữa Thánh lễ trọng thể (hát)16 và Thánh lễ đọc (thường). Thánh
lễ hát thường có sự tham dự của các thầy phụ phó tế và phó tế. Họ hỗ
trợ cho vị chủ tế khi trao đĩa và chén cho ngài, đậy chén thánh, phụ
xông hương và rửa tay. Ca đoàn thì hát bài dâng lễ nhưng không thấy
nói gì đến việc cộng đoàn tiến dâng của lễ. Trong Thánh lễ đọc càng
không có thực hành giáo dân tham gia tiến dâng lễ vật. Ngoài sự khác
biệt với Thánh lễ trọng thể là không có hát, thì phần việc của thầy
phụ phó tế và phó tế được thay thế một phần bởi chú giúp lễ và một

Cho đến sau Công đồng Vatican II, việc chuẩn bị lễ phẩm được nhấn
mạnh hơn là tiến dâng, vì thế cuộc rước lễ phẩm được áp dụng trở lại
như được mô tả trong Sách lễ của Đức Phaolô VI (năm 1970). Hiện nay,

Rõ ràng là các lễ phẩm bánh và rượu, tiền bạc hay quà tặng khác dành
cho người nghèo và cho Giáo Hội được mang đến cho vị chủ tọa thuộc
về phần chuẩn bị lễ vật, tức là phải được tiến hành trong thời điểm
chuẩn bị lễ vật trong Thánh lễ chứ không thể vào thời điểm khác.
Hành động đó (dâng lễ phẩm vật chất) biểu trưng cho tấm lòng (dâng
lễ phẩm thiêng liêng) của những người trao dâng lễ phẩm. Họ ao ước
hiến dâng chính mình cho Thiên Chúa tất cả những gì họ có và họ là,
cùng với lễ phẩm bánh và rượu để được thánh hóa trở thành hy lễ của
Chúa Kitô.20 Ý nghĩa của hành động này không khác gì với ý nghĩa của
việc dâng lễ ngay từ thời Thánh lễ chặng viếng (thế kỷ VII-VIII),
nghĩa là giống như mọi của lễ được tập hợp trên bàn thờ, tất các các
tín hữu đã được liên kết với nhau cũng làm thành một cộng đồng của
lễ trước mặt Chúa cả trời đất.21 Nếu có đoàn rước thì những giỏ tiền
sẽ được mang đến cung thánh cùng với lễ phẩm bánh và rượu để cho
thấy mối liên hệ giữa hy lễ của dân Kitô giáo với hy lễ của Chúa
Kitô.22</span></p>

Nguyên tắc phụng vụ là tránh hết sức làm hai hành vi (hai việc) cùng
một lúc. Như đã trình bày ở trên, thu tiền lạc quyên là thành phần
của việc gom góp của lễ cho cử hành diễn ra trong phần Phụng vụ
Thánh Thể. Chúng đã có từ thời các tông đồ và giáo phụ. Một ít trong
số của lễ đó là bánh và rượu sẽ được“Thánh Thể hóa”qua lời nguyện
của chủ tế, tức được sử dụng trong Thánh lễ. Một ít trong số của lễ
đó, có thể gồm thực phẩm, được dành đặc biệt cho người nghèo. Thông
thường, của lễ cũng bao gồm tiền dâng cúng được sử dụng cho những
nhu cầu căn bản của đời sống cộng đoàn, gồm việc thực thi bác ái xã
hội và rao giảng Tin Mừng. Tất cả những thứ đó đều là lễ phẩm của cả
cộng đoàn được trao dâng qua vị chủ tọa cộng đoàn vì lợi ích của mọi
người. Do vậy, không thích hợp khi vừa tiếp nhận lễ phẩm và chuẩn bị
chúng tại bàn thờ đang khi vẫn tiếp tục gom góp những lễ phẩm
khác.23 Bởi vậy, thực hành lý tưởng nhất là: i] Linh mục chủ tế, các
thừa tác viên và dân chúng ngồi chờ trong khi tiến hành thu tiền
dâng cúng và rồi đưa vào trong cuộc rước cùng với những lễ phẩm
khác; ii] Hát hay dạo đàn có thể bắt đầu khi thu tiền dâng và tiếp
tục trong cuộc rước lễ vật; iii] Không thu tiền thau trong khi:
Tuyên xưng đức tin (đọc hay hát kinh Tin kính), dâng Lời nguyện Tín
hữu và chủ tế đọc Lời nguyện Tiến lễ vì hành động trao dâng của lễ
mang tính biểu tượng không phù hợp với các phần phụng vụ này.</span></p>

Một trong những lý do khiến nhiều nơi cố tình thu góp tiền thau đang
khi cộng đoàn nghe giảng và đọc kinh Tin kính là vì muốn tranh thủ
thời gian, sợ rằng nếu đưa đúng phần này vào lúc chuẩn bị lễ vật thì
Thánh lễ sẽ phải kéo dài lâu hơn. Tuy nhiên, phụng vụ không thể chấp
nhận bất cứ một thực hành nào dựa theo“chủ nghĩa thực dụng”đến độ xa
rời truyền thống đã có từ lâu đời trong Giáo Hội cũng như sai lệch
hướng dẫn của Giáo Hội. Vì thế, vấn đề mục vụ tại các giáo xứ là làm
thế nào để rút ngắn thời gian thu tiền thau một cách hợp lý mà không
làm tiêu tán phẩm chất của nghi thức phụng vụ. Xin đề nghị ở đây hai

có thể đứng tại các cửa vào thánh đường hay đặt giỏ tiền ở đó trước
Thánh lễ để những tín hữu vào tham dự Thánh lễ có thể bỏ tiền dâng
cúng vào lúc ấy. Những giỏ tiền này được tập trung ở cuối thánh
đường và sẽ được đem lên cung thánh trong đoàn rước dâng lễ vật khi
