đều thuộc Đạo Thánh của Chúa Kitô gọi chung là Kitô Giáo (Christianity).
Nhưng theo dòng thời gian, đã có những biến cố gây ra tình trạng rạn nứt
hay ly giáo (schisms) hoặc những cải cách (reformations) đáng tiếc xảy
ra khiến Kitô Giáo bị phân chia thành 3 Nhánh chính trên đây. Ngoài ra,
còn một nhánh Kitô Giáo nữa là Anh Giáo (Anglican Communion) do vua
Henri VIII (1491-1547) của nước Anh chủ xướng năm 1534 để lập một Giáo
Hội riêng cho Nước Anh, tách khỏi Rôma chỉ vì Tòa Thánh La Mã (Đức Giáo

<font size="3">Trước hết, danh xưng Chính Thống "Orthodoxy", theo ngữ căn (etymology)
Hy lạp “orthos doxa", có nghĩa là "ca ngợi đúng (right-praise), "tin
tưởng đúng” (right belief). Danh xưng này được dùng trước tiên để chỉ
lập trường của các giáo đoàn đã tham dự các Công Đồng đại kết
(Ecumenical Councils) Nicêa I (325) Ephêsô (431) và nhất là Chalcedon
(451) trong đó họ đã đồng thanh chấp thuận và đề cao những giáo lý được
coi là chân chính (sound doctrines)’ tinh tuyền của Kitô Giáo để chống
lại những gì bị coi là tà thuyết hay lạc giáo (heresy). Do đó, trong bối
cảnh này, từ ngữ "orthodoxy” được dùng để đối nghịch với từ ngữ “heresy”
có nghĩa là tà thuyết hay lạc giáo. Nhưng sau biến cố năm 1054 khi hai
Giáo Hội Kitô Giáo Hy Lạp ở Constantinople (tượng trưng cho Đông Phương)
và Giáo Hội Công Giáo LaMã (Tây Phương) đã xung đột và ra vạ tuyệt thông
cho nhau (anthemas=excommunications) ngày 16 tháng 7 năm 1054 giữa
Michael Cerularius, Thượng Phụ Constantinople và Đức cố Giáo hoàng Leo
IX vì có những bất đồng lớn về tín lý, thần học và quyền bính, thì danh
xưng "Chính Thống” (orthodoxy) lại được dùng để chỉ Giáo Hội Hy Lạp ở
Constantinople đã ly khai không còn hiệp thông với Giáo Hội Công Giáo La
Mã. Sau này, Giáo Hội "Chính Thống” Hy Lạp ở Constantinople đã lan ra
các quốc gia trong vùng như Thổ nhĩ Kỳ, Nga, Albania, Estonia, Cyprus,
Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Rumania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine. . . Vì
thế, ở mỗi quốc gia này cũng có Giáo Hội Chính Thống nhưng độc lập với
nhau về mọi phương diện. Nghĩa là không có ai là người lãnh đạo chung
của các Giáo Hội này, mặc dù họ có tên gọi chung là các Giáo Hội Chính
Thống Đông Phương (Eastern Orthodox Churches) tách khỏi khỏi Giáo Hội
Công Giáo La Mã. (Tây Phương)</font></span></p>

Kỳ ở Istanbul được coi là Thượng Phụ Đại Kết (Ecumenical Patriarch) của
các Giáo Hội Chính thông Đông Phương. Cách nay 2 năm Đức Thánh Cha
Bê-nê-đich tô 16 đã sang thăm Đức Thượng phụ Giáo Chủ Chính Thống Thổ để
tỏ thiện chí muốn đối thoại, đưa đến hiệp thông giữa hai Giáo Hội anh
em. Riêng Giáo Hội Chính Thống Nga, cho đến nay, vẫn chưa tỏ thiện chí
muốn xích gần lại với Giáo Hội Công Giáo La Mã, vì họ cho rằng Công Giáo
muốn "lôi kéo” tín đồ Chính Thống vào Công Giáo sau khi chế độ cộng sản
ở Nga tan rã, tạo điều kiện thuận lợi cho Giáo Hội Chính Thông Nga hành
Đạo.</font></span></p>

và Tây phương (The Greek Church and the Holy See=Rome) nói trên vẫn hiệp
thông trọn vẹn với nhau về mọi phương diện vì cả hai Giáo Hội anh em này
đều là kết quả truyền giáo ban đầu của các Thánh Tông Đồ Phêrô và Anrê.
Lịch sử truyền giáo cho biết là Thánh Phêrô đã rao giảng Tin mừng ở vùng
đất nay là lãnh địa của Giáo Hội Công Giáo La Mã (Roma) trong em ngài,
Thánh Anrê (Andrew) sang phía Đông để rao giảng trước hết ở Hy lạp và
sau đó trong phần đất nay là Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ (Turkey). Như thế, cả hai Giáo
Hội Kitô Giáo Đông Phương Constantinople và Tây Phương Rôma đều có nguồn
gốc Tông đồ thuần túy (Apostolic succession).</font></span></p>

Sở dĩ thế, vì họ không công nhận vai trò lãnh đạo Giáo Hội của Đức Giáo
Hoàng, nên đã bác bỏ mọi tín điều được các Đức Giáo Hoàng công bố với ơn
bất khả ngộ (Infallibility) mà Công Đồng Vaticanô I (1870) đã nhìn nhận.</font></span></p>

tông phá hủy mọi khả năng hành thiện rồi (làm việc lành), nên mọi nỗ lực

tin vào Chúa Kitô dựa trên Kinh Thánh là được cứu rỗi mà thôi. (Sola

nhưng cũng phải có thiện chí công tác với ơn thánh để sống và thực thi
những cam kết khi được rửa tội. Nếu không, Chúa không thể cứu ai được
như Chúa Giêsu đã nói rõ: “không phải bất cứ ai thưa với Thầy: lạy Chúa,
lạy Chúa là được vào Nước Trời cả đâu! Nhưng chỉ có ai thi hành ý muốn

trọng vào việc đọc và giảng kinh thánh nhưng không nhấn mạnh đến phần

và kinh thánh, họ không tin và công nhận một bí tích nào khác. Điển
hình, vì không công nhận phép Thánh Thể, nên họ không tin Chúa Giêsu

câu Phúc Âm Thánh Marcô kể lại một ngày kia Chúa Giêsu đang giảng dạy
cho một đám đông người thì Đức Mẹ cà các môn đệ của Chúa đến. Có người
trong đám đông đã nói với Chúa rằng: “Thưa Thầy có mẹ và anh em, chị em
của Thầy ở ngoài kia đang tìm Thầy. ” (Mc 3:32). Anh em tin lành đã căn
cứ vào câu này để phủ nhận niềm tin Đức Mẹ trọn đời đồng trinh của Công
Giáo và Chính thống, vì họ cho rằng Mẹ Maria đã sinh thêm con cái sau
khi sinh Chúa Giêsu. Nghĩa là họ chỉ tin Đức Mẹ đồng trinh cho đến khi
sinh Chúa Giêsu mà thôi. Thật ra cụm từ “anh chị em “trong ngữ cảnh
(context) trên đây chỉ là anh chị em theo nghĩa thiêng liêng (spiritual
brotherhood, sisterhood) và đây là cách hiểu và giải thích Kinh Thánh
của Công Giáo và Chính Thống, khác với Tin lành.</font></span></p>
