Có một tập tục lâu đời là ghi lời đề tặng trên các vật dụng phụng vụ như
chén thánh và đĩa thánh. Một trong các thí dụ xưa nhất còn tồn tại là
một chén thánh gọi là chén thánh Tassilo, vốn đã được trao tặng cho đan
viện Biển Đức ở Kremsmünster năm 777, bởi công tước Tassilo miền Bavaria
và phu nhân Luitpirga. Một thí dụ khác là chén thánh Bedia trong thế kỷ
X được trao tặng bởi hoàng hậu xứ Georgia. Lời khắc, viết bằng chữ
Georgia cổ, là: “Lạy Mẹ rất Thánh của Chúa, xin mẹ cầu cùng Con Mẹ dủ
lòng thương xót với Bagrat, Vua xứ Abkhazia, và thân mẫu ngài là Hoàng

Các vật trang trí nhà thờ, vốn có ghi lời đề tặng, là các cửa sổ kính
màu và ghế ngồi trong nhà thờ. Thường các vật này có một tấm bảng bằng
đồng thau hoặc một vật liệu bền chắc ghi các câu, chẳng hạn "Để tôn vinh
Thiên Chúa và tưởng nhớ N., do con cái người này trao tặng”. Các câu
khác thường là đơn giản hơn, chỉ xin cầu nguyện cho một người hoặc một
gia đình, và tên người hiến tặng. Các người hảo tâm khác chỉ ghi đơn
giản: “Xin cầu nguyện cho nhà tài trợ", phó thác sự nghỉ yên trong Chúa.
Thỉnh thoảng có lời ghi phức tạp hơn, nhưng tập tục Công Giáo Rôma có xu
hướng ngắn gọn trong loại hình lưu niệm này.</span></p>

Lời lưu niệm đặt trên các vật làm bằng vải thì ít phổ biến hơn, có lẽ vì
ý tưởng đằng sau lời lưu niệm như vậy là rằng vật lưu niệm phải bền bỉ
với thời gian, trong khi các vật bằng vải, dù là vải tốt đến mấy chăng
nữa, có xu hướng hư nhanh hơn do sử dụng nhiều. Nói như thế không có
nghĩa là không có vật lưu niệm bằng vải. Thí dụ tu viện Anh giáo
Westminster, London, có một số ngọn cờ rước kiệu được làm thật công phu,
vốn có lời đề tặng kỷ niệm và đã tồn tại hơn một thế kỷ. Tôi chắc rằng
có, nhưng tôi không nắm rõ, các thí dụ về các ngọn cờ rước kiệu Công
Giáo được hiến tặng tương tự như vậy.</span></p>
