Trước hết về từ ngữ, danh từ SƠ như người công giáo ViệtNam- và cả các
nữ tu Việt Nam ở Mỹ- vẫn quen dùng, xuất phát từ tiếng Pháp là SOEUR
có nghĩa là CHỊ hay Em gái.Người Pháp dùng danh từ trên để chỉ các nữ
tu có lời khấn trọn trong một Dòng Tu hay Tu Hội được thành lập hợp
pháp theo giáo luật trong Giáo Hội.</span></p>

Trong thời người Pháp còn ở ViêtNam, người ta quen gọi các Nữ tu Dòng
Thánh Phaolô ( áo trắng) là các Soeurs còn các nữ tu trong nước, như các
nữ tu mến Thánh Giá, Mân Côi … là các Dì phước, ( Địa Phận Hà nội còn có
danh xưng “ bà mụ” để goi các nữ tu Mến Thánh Giá) . Sau này vào miền
Nam thì các nữ tu Mến Thánh Giá nói chung , cách riêng là các nữ tu Mến
Thánh Giá Chợ Quán, Cái Nhum .v.v đều được gọi là các Dì Phước chứ không
ai gọi là các Soeurs, là danh xưng tiếng Pháp chỉ các Nữ Tu ngoại quốc
như các nữ tu Dòng Thánh Phaolô, Dòng Phanxicô, Dòng Chúa Quan Phòng
v.v. Các nam tu sĩ của các Dòng Tu hay Tu Hội chỉ có lời khấn mà
không có chức thánh , thì được gọi là các Sư huynh = Frere= Brother,
như Dòng Jean Baptist de Lasalle.v,v</span></p>

Dòng Đồng Công có hai bậc là Linh mục và Thầy = Brother. Ngoài ra, người
ta cũng gọi các chủng sinh đang học để trở thành linh mục là các<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><b style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Thầy</b>.
Cách xưng hô này không đúng và chỉ có ở Viêt Nam mà thôi, còn ở Mỹ và
Âu Châu người ta gọi các chủng sinh chưa được chịu chức là
Seminarist=Seminarian, chứ không gọi là Brother=Frere =Sư huynh.</span></p>

Tất cả các nam nữ tu sĩ có ba lời khấn khó nghèo ( porvety), khiết tịnh
( chastety) và vâng phục ( obedience) đều được gọi chung là các nam nữ
tu sĩ thuộc đời sống thánh hiến ( men and women of consecrated life or
men and women religious), một bậc sống có ơn gọi thánh hiến đời mình
cho Chúa Kitô để sống ba lời khuyên của Phúc Âm là khó nghèo, khiết
tịnh và vâng phục theo linh đạo ( spirituality) riêng của mỗi Dòng Tu
hay Tu Hội. Bậc sống thánh hiến ( consecrated life) hay tu trì (
religious) là một trong ba bậc sống được Giáo Hội nhìn nhận là có ơn gọi
( vacation) riêng biệt để đi theo Chúa Kitô khó nghèo, khiết tịnh và
vâng lời. Hai bậc sống kia là Giáo sĩ ( clergy ) và Giáo dân( laity) (
x. Lumen Gentium số 28-29, 30, 43-47). Nay lại có thêm một bậc sống nữa
là bậc độc thân ( single life) của những người không đi tu mà cũng không
lập gia đình.</span></p>

Các nam tu sĩ nào chỉ có ba lời khấn mà không có chức thánh thì được

hàng giáo sĩ , tu sĩ ( clergy religious) và được gọi là các Cha hay Đức
Cha ( giám mục) như các giáo sĩ khác trong Giáo Hội .</span></p>

Như vậy, muốn được gọi cách đúng nghĩa là Nữ tu = Soeur=
Sister=Hermana, hay nam tu sĩ là Frere = Brother = Hermano = Thầy = Sư
huynh, thì phải được khấn trọn ( perpetual vows) trong một Dòng Tu hay
Tu Hội . Lời khấn trọn của các tu sĩ nam nữ không phải là một chức
thánh ( holy Order) mà chỉ là lời khấn vinh viễn để sống đời sống
thánh hiến ( consecrated life) mà thôi.Lời khấn này có thể được tháo gỡ
( dispensed ) dễ dàng nếu tu sĩ muốn và được Bề Trên liên hệ chấp thuận
không khó khăn như các Linh mục muốn xin hồi tục.</span></p>

Một điểm nữa là các tu sĩ nam hay nữ đã khấn trọn trong một Dòng Tu hay
Tu Hội thì đều có giá trị như nhau, vì đều thuộc thành phần những người
có ơn gọi thánh hiến ( men and women of consecrated life) trong Giáo
Hội. Nghĩa là không phải chỉ có các Nữ Tu thuộc các Dòng lớn như Đa
Minh, Phanxicô, Chúa Quan Phòng ( Providence) Nữ Tì Bác Ái ( Dòng của
Mẹ Tê-rê-xa Calcutta) v.v thì mới được gọi là SƠ= Soeur ,còn nữ tu của
các Tu Hội hay Dòng địa phương như Dòng Mân Côi, Dòng Mến Thánh Giá ,
Tu Hội Nhà Chúa v.v thì gọi là các Chị.</span></p>

hay tiếng Anh là Sister, và một bên gọi bằng tiếng Việt mà thôi.Nhưng
dường như người ta cứ cho rằng gọi là SƠ thì oai hơn là CHỊ, nên cứ nói
chị đó chưa phải là SƠ, hoặc đã thành SƠ rồi. </span></p>

Chưa phải là SƠ chỉ có nghĩa chưa là Nữ tu thực thụ, vì muốn được coi
là Nữ Tu đúng nghĩa thì ứng viên phải trả qua các giai đoạn như: ứng
sinh hay thỉnh sinh=Aspirant, tập sinh=Novice, khấn tạm= Temporary
vows, trước khi được khấn trọn= permanent or perpetual vows để được
chính thức gọi là nữ tu= Sister=Soeur= Hermana( Spanish)</span></p>

Nhưng vì văn hóa và ngôn ngữ Viêt Nam, nên nếu gọi một Nữ tu là<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><b style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px">Chị</b><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>như

nghe không “êm tai” cho bằng gọi là SƠ, nhưng phải hiểu là SƠ hay Sister
thì cũng chỉ có nghĩa là một chị nữ tu đã khấn trọn mà thôi, và đây
không phải là chức thánh, như các chức Phó tế, Linh mục hay Giám mục.</span></p>

Một điều không hợp lý nữa là nay sống ở Mỹ, thì danh xưng nữ tu phải là
Sister, nam tu là Brother. Vậy các nữ tu phải được gọi là các Sisters
mới đúng chứ, gọi là SƠ thì giới trẻ ở Mỹ không biết tiếng Pháp sẽ
không hiểu SƠ là gì , và ngay cả người lớn cũng có thể hiểu sai SƠ là

Người giáo dân Mỹ -khi gọi ai mặc tu phục là Sister hay Brother- thì
họ hiểu đó là nữ tu hay nam tu , nghĩa là những người thuộc giới tu
trì ( religious), khác với những người có gia đình thuộc thành phần giáo
dân. Tu sĩ là người không có chức thánh mà chỉ có lời khấn trong một
Dòng hay Tu Hội mà thôi.</span></p>

Nhưng dù là Dòng Tu lớn hay Tu Hội nhỏ, thì lời khấn vẫn giống nhau và
có giá trị như nhau. . Dĩ nhiên danh xưng Soeur=Sister hay Brother
được hiểu là các Nữ tu hay nam tu sĩ chỉ có lời khấn Dòng nhưng
không có chức thánh, trừ các nam tu sĩ được nhà Dòng hay Tu Hội liên hệ
tuyển lựa để học và lãnh các chức thánh Phó tế và Linh mục- và sau này
có thể được chọn làm Giám mục, Hồng Y hay Giáo Hoàng, như Đức đương
kim Giáo Hoàng Phanxicô là một tu sĩ Dòng Tên ( Sj).Có rất nhiều Dòng
Tu hay Tu Hội có nam tu sĩ là linh mục , Giám mục như các linh mục và
Giám mục thuộc Dòng Đa Minh, Dòng Chúa Cứu Thế, Dòng Tên ( Jesuits)Dòng
Ngôi Lời ( SVD) Dòng Phanxicô( Ofm), Xitô ,v,v.</span></p>

giáo dân và ngay cả người ngoài công giáo.Thí dụ , khi giới thiệu một
chủng sinh cho người ngoại quốc nói tiếng Anh, Pháp, Tây Ban Nha… thì
không thể dùng danh xưng Frere=Brother=Hermano được mà phải nói đây là
một chủng sinh-Seminarist= Seminarian chứ không phải là “Thầy=Teacher”
như người Việt vẫn quen nói với nhau được.</span></p>
